ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.

Application filed November 11, 1922. Serial No. 800,299.
This invention has reference to display covers for containers and like receptacles in which are packed and from which are dispensed cakes, crackers and similar pastry and bakery goods.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a light inexpensive displaycover adapted for detachable connection with containers of a standard type, whether made of fiber-board or other non-metallic material, or of metal.
The invention comprohends a cover for containers, the opening in one side or one end of which is preferably surrounded by a flange; the cover includes a flanged strip or plate to engage one edge of a container to overlie the flange disposed along one side of the opening therein and an adjacent wall, means being provided to detachably attach said strip or plate to the flanged end or side of the container, and a preferably flat rectangular plate hingedly connected to said strip or plate and having a display opening covered by a transparent member.
That the invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating'a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved display-cover for containers made of metallic or non-metallic material;
Figure 2 is a side elevation looking in at the right side of Figure 1, the dotted lines indicating the container;
, Figure 3 is a top plan or edge view of Figure 1, the container shown in section, dotted line showing the lid swung out and away from the open end or 1 side of a container.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the open.
flanged end or side of a container partly broken away and in section and showing the flanged strip or plate applied thereto and with the securing means in two positions in-full and dotted lines, the hinged cover or lid being removed but shown in dotted lines in open position;
Figure 5 is a detail in cross-section as the same would appear, if taken 011 the line 5-5 Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a perspective viewpartly broken away and in section showing how the strip or plate of the cover or lid is secured in position to the flange at the open end of the container.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Containers of the type herein referred to and intended for the purposes herein stated have become more or less standard, except that they are manufactured of fiber-board or other light non-metallic material and also of sheet metal. Some have removable lids or covers for the open ends or sides, others have hinged lids or covers and others are furnished with other and different kinds of closures. The aim being to reduce the cost of manufacture, which ultimately reduces the cost of the products to the consumer. To this end the containers are manufactured with the open ends or sides preferably surrounded by inturned flanges which not only act as a retainer for any of the different kinds of destructible closures being used, but also presents an open end or sides void of sharp edges and which serves as a strengthening and stiffening means for such open end or side.
In the drawings, the container, of the box like shape is designated 1 and may be made of fiber-board or other non-metallic material, or of metal. is preferably open, as at 2 to permit of the articles being backed therein and for the removal of thesame, and such opening is preferably surrounded or bordered by an inwardly projecting flange 3 which may be constructed by turning in or lapping the material forming the body, as at 4:, see Figure 5. The flange 3 strengthens as well as stiffens the open end or side of the container, and eliminates sharp edges if the container is made of metal.
The display-cover includes the angular strip or plate 5 andthe lid or cover 6- hinged thereto. The construction of such display-cover and its manner of attachment permits it to be interchangeably attached to the open end or side of a container so as to be swung indifferent directions. In this way, the dealer may attach a displaycover to a 'containerso that the lid 6 may be swung up or from either side, as he may desire.
The strip or plate 5 is attachable to one edge of the container, adjoining one stripof the flange 3 and one side Wall of the con One end or one side tainer, see Figures 4, 5 and 6. This gives a bearing and purchase of the-strip on the edge of the container. The ends of that porends 7 are Clasps or hooks '8 which maybe;
swung to enga e the underside of the flange 3, see Figures 4, 5 and'G so asjto detachably secure the strip or plate 5 to the container, and thus attach thelid orcoverq6 in :position, also preventing the strip or plate :5 trom flipping oil when the lid or cover 6 is swung open. Also thatiportion of the strip 5 overlying the flange 8,-between the spread ends? is bent inwardly at 'right anglesoas' at 9, see Figures 5.and*6 which bears against the edge of the flange 3 of the container and serves as an:additiona1 seating and retaining-means:for-the strip. or plate '5 on'the container. To the upper or'horizontal portion of thestrip or plate Stare connecteda pair of spaced hingemembers 10 and to said iingemembers is-connected a rod 11 on the lid or cover 6, the latter beingcutout or away, as at 12-.to provide seats for the members '10, see Figure 1. a,
The lid! or cover 6 is preferably a flat rectangul-ar plate, of a size, together with the strip or plate 5 to-cover theopen end or side 2 of the container, see Figures 1 and 3. 'It is provided with anenlarged-display opening l3covered'bya transparent =member M, such as glass, which may be held thereon in any suitable manner,- such as=by flanges 15 tormediby turninginthe edgesot the plate, or which maybe soldered'or secured to the plate in any snitable manner.
The flanges limaybe so disposecL-see Fig ure 3 that when the =1id-or cover-6 isclOsed, said flanges lie within the opening 2 of the container and adjacent the inner edges of the flanges 3 and'positionthe lid'or'cover securely over the opening 2, in the container.
What I claim 'is:--
