GEORGE E. PICKUP, OF"'NEWAR,K, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE W'EHBLE COMPANY, .OF
.NEWARK, .OHIQyA CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SIGNIEOST AND THE LIKE.
Application filedfieptenrber 4,1924. Serial No. 735,729.
This invention a'elates generally .to street sign posts and the like, and particularly to posts constructed .of cast iron. Hereto fore such posts have been made in separate parts so constructed and arranged as to present iU'UltCliS or spaces to (the weather permitting the entrance or rain and moisture resulting in' excessive corrosion.
The primary object of this invention is to .provide a construction for a post of the character indicated in which the joints between the several parts are protected against the entrance of rain and ,moisture.
Another object of the invention is to .provide a,cap .of novel construction adapted to be set into the hollow ends of a post proper and secured by a simple mechanical arrangement.
Still another object is to provide a cap in the form of a unitary casting with integral brackets thereon adapted to support si n plates or the like, the whole being so arranged as to lend a neat and attractive appearance to the completed. post.
In the drawings Iliave illustrated a sign post embodying the principles of the invention for the purpose of illustration.
Figure 1 is aview ot the top of the .post showingthepost,.the cap andthe sign plates.
F 2 is a longitudinal cross section f the post and the cap.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross section of the cap along the iline of .Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: :is an enlarged cross sectional view of a bracket and ot' a sign plate secured thereto, the View being taken along the'line 4- 1: of 3, showing also a Jt'ragmentary portion of the cap.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the view'in Fig. 3.
The post comprises in general a majorpost member or-body 10 which has an upper open end to receive a cap member. I preferably use a seamless pipe for the post andprovide a square cut end thereon as shown at 11. The cap member is generally designated --12 in Fig. 1. It-is provided with a shank 13 having a snug or driving fit in the upper end of the pipe, and with a projectingtlange or head 1% providing a shoulder to abut the square cut end 11 of the pipe. The head, it will be seen; overhangs the pipe end 11 so as to shed water and prevent its entrance into the unprotected interior of the post.
Then the shank of the cap has been forced into the upper end of the pipe forming the post proper, .a hole .is drilled through the telescoping parts .to receive a pin 15 which eilectively secures the parts together. The pin ends are preferably welded to the post from the outside to secure the parts in permanent relation.
The cap above theshoulder 14 is a hollow casting andis attractively shaped for the sake of appearance. Herein 1 show a cap having acylindrical portion 16 and a closed top 17, there being a restricted portion 18 and-a bead 19 between the top and the cylindrical portion.
The cap cylinder 16 may have oneormore brackets extending therefrom, preferably in a substantially tangential relation. Herein I show two such brackets 20 and 21 arranged-at right angles for use ataa-ight air gled street intersection. The enternal face 22 of each bracket is tangential with the face of the cylinder 16. The lower head 14 is carried tangentiallyalongeaeh bracket at the bottom thereof as shown at :23. A. corresponding upper bead 2 4 is carried from bracket to bracket around the cylinder 16 merely for the sake of appearance. The top of each bracket in the (present instance has a flange 25 adapted .to overhang the upper edge of a sign plate 28secured to the inside face 26 of the bracket, as will now be described. The two flanges 25 are joined together by a head 27 around the cylindrical part 16 to match the bead 14 below it and to prevent rain from enteringintothe joints in.theimmediate vicinity otthe flange 25.
To receive the inner ends o fthe sign plates 28, the cylindrical portion '16 of the cap is recessed slightly as indicated at 29, to re ceive the edge 30 otthesignplatefthe lower head 14: being cut away to permit the end of the sign plate tofit into said recess from top tobottom thereof. Herein theplates are secured in position bymeans of. bolts 31 entered through holes 32 in the brackets and holes '33 in the plates. The recesses 30 underlie the flanges-25 so that the-latter serve to prevent water from entering thej oints between the inner ends ofthe plates and the cylindrical wall, of the cap member.
It will be observed thatbymy construction there are-no joints through which water may readily pass to the interior of the post. Preferably the assembly is hot-galvanized or otherwise treated to resist the weather, such treatment filling the seam at 11 to insure the exclusion of water therefrom. The sign plates 28 are likewise of a weather resistant material, or have such a coating as to permit their being secured to the brackets without corrosive action when exposed to the weather.
In the foregoing the construction of the exemplary embodiment of the invention has been described in great detail merely for the purpose of illustrating the invention. The description, however, and the embodiment of the invention as shown in the drawings are not to be construed as limiting the invention short of the statements thereof in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1; A street sign post comprising, in combination, a tubular post member, a cylindrical cap member having a shank fitting into the end of said post member and constructed to overhang the upper end of the post member, means to secure the pipe and cap together, a bracket formed integral with the cylindrical portion of the cap, the inside face of said bracket being adapted to receive the face of a sign plate, and a flange on the top of the bracket adapted to overlie the sign plate when secured to the bracket.
2. A-street sign post comprising, in com-- bination, a tubular post member, a cylindrical cap member having a shank fitting into the end of said post member and constructed to overhang the upper end of the post member, a bracket formed integral with the cylindrical portion of the cap, the inside face of said bracket being adapted to receive the face of a sign plate, and a flange on the top of the bracket adapted to overlie the sign plate when secured to the bracket.

A street sign post comprising, in combination, a pipe length for the post member, a cylindrical cap member, a shank on said cap fitting into the end of said pipe member, said shank being constructed so that its lower end overhangs the upper end of the pipe, a pair of brackets on said cap member extending substantially tangentially to the cylindrical portion of the cap, and sign plates secured upon the inner faces of said brackets.
at. A street sign post comprising, in combination, a pipe length for the post member, a cap member, a shank on said cap member fitting into and rigidly secured in the end of said pipe member, said shank being smaller in size than the adjacent portion of the cap member whereby said portion overlies the end wall of the pipe, a bracket projecting from said cap and formed integral therewith, one side of said bracket being adapted to receive the face of a sign plate, and a flange on the top of said bracket adapted to overlie the sign plate when secured to the bracket at said face.
5. A sign post or the like comprising, in combination, a hollow ended post member, a cap therefor, a shank on said cap fitting into said hollow end, a bead formed on said cap above said shank and covering the end Wall of the post member, and a supporting bracket extending from the said cap member and formed integral therewith.
6. A sign post or the like comprising, in combination, a hollow ended post member and a unitary cap casting therefor, said casting having a shank rigidly secured in the upper end of said post, an annular bead formed integral with said cap and covering the upper end of said post member, and a supporting bracket integral with the cap member.
7 In a street sign post, a post cap bracket extending from the post cap adapted to re ceive a sign plate against one face of the bracket, and means to secure the plate to said bracket with the end of the plate against said post cap, the cap having a re ceiving recess therein for the end of said plate.
8. A street sign comprising in combination, a post, a cylindrical cap casting secured to the upper end of said post, a pair of brackets cast integral with and projecting tangentially from said cap, and a sign plate secured to said cap, the arrangement being such that the external faces of the brackets are tangential to the cylindrical surface of the cap.
9. A street sign comprising, in combination, a post, a cylindrical cap casting secured to the upper end of said post, a bracket cast integral with and projecting tangentially from said cap, the outside face of the bracket being tangential with the cylindrical surface of the cap, and a sign plate fastened to the inner side of said bracket and having its inner end abut-ting against the body of said cap adjacent said bracket.
10. A street sign post comprising, in com-- bination, a post member, a cap member secured to the post member, said cap member havin a vertical surface, a portion of which is rounded in form, and a sign carrying bracket extending from said cap member integrally therewith in such a manner that the outer surface of the bracket is tangential to the vertical rounded surface of the cap.
