Application filed. January This invention relates to improvements in removable handle mechanism for brushes and the like and the object thereof is to provide a handle mechanism of simple and economical construction which can be readily attached to brushes of usual commercial form and which can be readily removed and applied to another brush.

A further object of the invention is to provide a handle mechanism for brushes which can he applied to brushes of different widths and effectively clamped thereupon.

A further object of the invention is to provide a removable handle mechanism for brushes comprising novel means for preventing relative lateral movement between the handle and the mechanism which clamps the handle to the head.

A further object of the invention is to provide a removable handle mechanism for brushes comprising relatively movable clamping members with means for locking the clamping members against expansive movementafter the clamping members have been applied and securedto the brush head.

A further object of the invention is toprovide a removable handle mechanism for brushes of the character above described in which the clamping members are formed of sheet metal. 1 1

Other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

The present invention comprises certain improvements upon the removable handle mechanism for brushes and brooms disclosed in our prior Patent No 1,423,151 granted July 18, 1922 while embodying the general features of construction of the device disclosed in said patent.

be made in any desired form, substantially to the head of the brush to which it is applied The invention is illustrated herein as applied to a brush of a usual type having a head 1 of general rectangular form. The

removable handle mechanism comprises generally a pair of complementary clamping members which embrace the respective edges of the brush and are secured together and to the foot of a handle member by a single bolt. As illustrated herein one of the clamping members is in the form of a plate 2 of sheet metal having a downwardly extending hooked end 3 adapted toembrace one of the edges of the brush head. The plate 2 is provided with upwardly extending ears 4 and 5 forming guides for the complementary clamping member and is also provided at its opposite edges with integral downwardly extending tabs 6 and 7 which engage beneath a re-enforcing plate 8 through which, and the plate 2, a clamping bolt .9 extends. The head 10 of the clamping bolt engages the reenforcing plate 8 and desirably is held in such engagement by a retaining plate 11 which may be of relatively thin metal extending across the lower face of the plate 8 with its edges wrapped around the edges of the plate 8 as illustrated in Fig. 3.

The plate 2 also desirably is provided with preferably integral penetrating members 12 whichv project downwardly from the edges of the plate 2. The plate 2 with its ears 4, its tabs 6 and 7 and penetrating members 12, can be readily formed from a sheet of metal of substantially rectangular form, the ears, tabs and penetrating members being formed by slitting the edges of the plate and bending such members to the desired positions.

.The complementary clamping member comprises a plate 13 of sheet metal, desirably of the same width as the plate 2, having a downwardly extending hooked end let to embrace the. opposite edge of the brush head and provided with upwardly extending abutments preferably in the form of parallel flanges 10 and 16 which fit between the guiding ears 4 and 5 of the lower clamping plate. The complementary plate desirably is provided with a slot 17 through which the bolt 9 passes, thereby permitting relative longitudinal adjustment of the plates which enables the clamping members to fit upon brush heads of different widths.

Means desirably are provided to lock the clamping members against expansive movement after they are applied to the brush head. Any suitable means may be provided to accomplish this'purpose. The preferred means illustrated herein comprises a hook shaped pawl 18 having a hole 19 which fits upon the bolt 9 and a downwardly extending end 20 which engages the hook-shaped end 14 of the complementary clamping plate 13. Pawl members of various lengths may be made to correspond to different widths of brush heads so that the same clamping mem bers may be used effectively upon brush heads of different widths.

The handle member comprises a cylindrical socket portion 21, which may be of sheetmetal and provided with suitable means for securing the end of a handle therein, and an extension 22 forming a foot adapted to be secured to the clamping members. The foot 22 desirably is fiat and of a width to fit closely between the flanges l5 and 16 of the complementary clamping member above described, and desirably is provided at its edges with upwardly extending strengthening flanges which engage the flanges upon the complementary clamping member. This handle member also may be made of sheet metal.

The bolt 9 is provided with a nut 23, preferably in the form of a winged nut, which when set up serves to secure the clamping members and the handle members together so that when the clamping members have been applied to the brush head as above described the clamping members and the handle member are all simultaneously secured together and to the brush head.

It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is of an illustrative character and that various changes may be made in form, construction and arrangement of parts, and that the clamping members while preferably made of sheet metal may also be of forged or cast metal, or of any other suitable material, within the meaning and scope of the following claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

1. Removable handle mechanism for brushes comprising a sheet metal plate having means to embrace one edge of the brush head and provided with upwardly extending guiding ears, a locking bolt extending through said plate, means for securing the bolt head against the lower face of said plate, a complementary clamping plate slidably mounted between said guiding ears and provided with a longitudinal slot to receive said bolt and having means to engage the opposite edge of said brush head, a locking pawl held by said bolt and having means engaging said clamping plate, a handle holder having a foot provided with a hole fitting said bolt and a nut on said bolt operable to secure said clamping members and foot together and said pawl in looking position.

2. Removable handle mechanisn'i for brushes comprising a sheet metal. plate having means to embrace one edge of the brush head and provided with upwardly extending guiding ears and with integral penetrating tabs projecting downwardly from the edges of said plate, a locking bolt extending through said plate, a complementary clamping plate having parallel upwardly projecting flanges slidably mounted between said guiding ears and provided with a longitudinal slot to receive said bolt and having means to engage the opposite edge of said brush head, a handle holder having a foot fitting between the flanges of said complementary clamping member and provided with a hole to fitsaid bolt and a nut 011 said bolt operable to secure said clamping members and foot together.

3. Removable handle mechanism for brushes comprising a sheet metal plate having means to embrace one edge of the brush head and provided with upwardly extending guiding ears, a bolt extending through said plate, a complementary clamping member slidably mounted between said guiding ears and provided with a longitudinal slot to receive said bolt and having means to engage the opposite edge of said brush head, a locking pawl mounted on said bolt engaging the slotted clan'iping member and acting to prevent relative expansion of' said clamping members, a handle holder having a fool; provided with a hole to receive said bolt and a nut on said bolt operable to secure said clamping members, said locking pawl and said foot together.
