Application filed July 10, 1922. Serial No. 574,012.

This invention relates to improvements in package wrapping.

As is well known, difliculty is often experienced in quickly removing the wrapper from a package having the wrapper folded about the same and sealed or glued at the overlapping portions. It has been found desirable to provide means associated with the wrapper of a package to cut or tear the wrapper along a predetermined line to facilitate quick removal.

One object of the invention is to provide a package Wrapping of such character that the article wrapped may be sealed in a sanitary manner by the usual wrapping as manufactured and delivered to the customer and which wrapper may be quickly, readily and entirely removed by the user simply by pulling a tearing cord or other flexible stringlike member, the package wrapping being further characterized by the fact that the tearing or severing cord need not be permanently fastened or affixed to the wrapper proper but will nevertheless be retained in its operative position by the wrapper ltself until the wrapper is severed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a package'wrapping having simple and efficient means combined therewith for separating or tearing the wrapping along a predetermined line.

Another object of the invention is to provide a package wrapping in which the tearing or separating means is a cord, string or thread extending around the package beneath the wrapping, with both ends extending outside of the wrapping so as to be accessible in opening the package.

Another object of the invention is to provide a package wrapping having a tearing element, such as a string, cord or thread associated therewith, wherein the assembling of the parts in wrapping the package may be accomplished in a quick and eflicient manner,

Another object of the invention is to provide a package wrapping in which the tearing or separating element will sever the wrapping along a line extending entirely around the package, thus separating the same into two sections, thereby making the wrap ing readily removable.

I am aware that tearing strings for sealed wrapped packa es have heretofore been employed, but in a 1 such prior package wrapplngs it has heretofore been deemed necessar to permanently attach one end of the tearing cord to the wrapper as by glue or otherwise, and the tearing of the wrapper proper is dependent upon the permanenc of said attcahment of the tearing cord. ith

my improvements, a permanent attachment of the tearing cord to any other member is entirely eliminated with the attendant expense and without decreasing the efliciency of the severing action of the tearing cord when it is pulled, the tearing cord being held in position solely by interfolding it with the wrapper proper at the time the latter is applled to the article. One specific use where my improvements are particularly valuable is in connection with the sanitary sealed packages of absorbent cotton, usedin hospitals and where it is very desirable that the wrapping be removed quickly, without the necessity of scissors or other tools.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa package embodying my invention. Fig. 2 1s a perspective view of part of the package shown in Fig. 1 also showing a section through the package. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1 at the point at which the cord is passed around the package. Fig.

4 is a plan view of a rectangular sheet used in wrapping the article in accordance with my invention, showing the manner of arranging the cord or thread thereon, and also showing by dotted lines the location of the article to be wrapped.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a wrapper 1 which is folded about the article as clearly shown in Fig. 1. 2 indicates a cord or thread which is located betweengthe article 3 and the wra ping 1. This cord or thread is so arrange that the ends 4 and 5 extend outside of the wrapping so that the same may be grasped with the hands thereby serving as a means for severing the wrapping sheet which encloses the article.

In the specific embodiment herein shown, the wrapping comprises a rectangular sheet of paperor other material and, as shown in Fig. 3 the article 3 enclosed by the same is a box comprising the bottom 6 and the telescoping top or cover 7.

closes the article, being so folded that the adjacent end portions of the wrapping 1 are overlapped and inter-folded, as shown at 8. The opposite end portions of the wrapping are folded so as to form flaps or tabs 9 which are folded upwardly and glued or otherwise secured to the adjacent end portions of the wrapping.

As shown in Fig. 3, the tearing string or thread 2 is passed completely around the article and extends between the overlapping and inter-folded portions 8 of the wrapping so that the ends 4 and 5 will pass outside of the wrapping where the same are readily accessible. In wrapping the article, the string 2 is placed so as to extend across the wrapping, the article being placed on top of the sheet 1 and over the string 2 in the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. The sheet 1 and the string or thread 2 are then simultaneously wrapped around the article, the opposite ends of the same side of the sheet 1 being brought face to face, with the string or thread 2 extending beyond the edges of the same. The facing portions of the sheet 1 are then interfolded as shown at 8 in Fig. 3, and the other ends of the sheet 2 folded so as to form the flaps 9. The flaps 9 are then secured to the wrapping by gluing the same.

It is obvious that in opening the package, it is merely necessary to grasp the ends 4 and 5 of the thread and pull in opposite directions, thereb severing the wrapper along the dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the wrapper has been thus severed, the parts are easily removed from the article.

I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out the invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope if the claim appended hereto.

I claim:

In a sealed severable wrapped package, the combination with the commodity proper; of the wrapping proper enclosing the com modity and sealed thereon said wrapping having folded meeting ends and said wrapping being sealed; and a severing cord for the wrapper proper, said severing cord being loosely confined between the wrapper proper and the commodity and encircling the latter, both free ends of the severing cord being interfolded with folded edges of the wrapper proper and both ends only anchored by said interfolded edges, said ends both being extended to the exterior of the wrapper proper where they are adapted to be grasped and pulled, substantially as speci- In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 8th day of June 1922.
