KNOCKDOWN SHOW CASE.

Application filed June 26, 1925. Serial No. 39,759.

This invention relates to show cases and more particularly to knoc nor-1n show cases. 7 The object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character which may be readily setup or knocked down and which is primarily designed to be placed over a tray containing food to protect it against dust, fiiesand the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a show case of this character adapted to be used in connection with sheet pans com 'monlyused by bakers or handling their products ythe case be' transferable from one pan to another so t t all of such pans when used in connection with this case provides a showcase forthe goods and avoids handling of the products I \Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may e made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is well known that bakers deliver to' stores for sale, buns, doughnuts and similar food products which are conveyed from the bakery to the store in what are termed standard sheet pans or trays which all bakers keep in stock. The knockdown showcase shown constituting this invention is designed for use in connection with these pans, which are shown in the drawings at 1, said pans being provided around their edges with an upturned continuous'flange 2 over which this improved showcase shown at 10 is designed to fit.

As shown the collapsible case constituting this invention comprises side members 11 and 12 and end members 13 and 14 which are hingedly connected to a rectangular top frame 15.

The top frame 15 is made in the form of angle irons constructed of sheet metal, preferably of aluminum to ensure lightness, and the top flange 16 thereof has its free edge rolled inwardly to form a reinforcing bead 17. The free edge of the other flange 18 is cutout at intervals to form hinge knuckles 19 to receive the rod 20 which connects the This side member of the top frame 15 are similarly constructed, the hinge knuckles thereof forming bearings for the pintles which connect the side members 11 and 121' with the side portions of the top frame as is shown clearly in Figural. 1

Two transparent lids 21' and 22 are shaped to conform to the top frame 15 and 'form a closure therefor, said lids being hingedly connected with each other at their inner edges as shown at 23 and the pintle which connects them isfjournaled in bearings2 carriedby frame 15. These lids 21 and 22 are preferably constructed in the form of rectangular frames 25 which may be of wood or metal, preferably of the latter and when closed fit down into frame 15 as shown clearly in Figure 4 with edges 26 thereof overlying the upper face of said frame. These frames'25 have, grooves 27 along their inner edges to receive the transparent panes 28.

The free ends of the lids 21 and 22 are preferably provided with finger grips here shown in the form of rings'29 to facilitate lifting of the lids to obtain access to the interior of the case.

The ends and side members of the frame which are hinged to the top frame 15 are similarly constructed except that the side members have a transverse cross bar 30 arranged between the glass panels or panes 31 thereof, the end members having a single pane shown at 32.

These side and end members are each made in the form of a rectangular frame 33 composed either of wood or metal preferably of metal, the inner edges of which are grooved to receive the glass panels. The top bars 34 of these side and end members are cut out to form bearings 35 to receive the pintles which connect them with the top frame 15.

The lower bars 36 of each member has a longitudinally extending groove 37 in its lower edge which is designed to fit over the edge of the pan 1 in connection with .members 11 and 12 are swung outwardly which the showcase or protector is to be used as is shown clearly in Figure 4.

The upright end bars 38 of each end menib-er 11 and 12 is provided with an inturned right-angularly extending flan e 39 reinforced along its free edge by folding said edge inwardly. This bar 88 and its flange 89 is cut away at its upper or inner end to receive the pintle bearing carried by the end member of frame 15. The flange 39 overlaps the end bar of the adjacent side member when the case is set up as is shown clearly in Figure 7 and when the case is set up as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 these members will be securely connected and the case held rigidly in operative position on the pan 1.

In the use of this casing when it is desired to collapse it and get it out of the way the case is lifted oif the pan then the end and the side members 13 and 14 folded iiiwardlyointo the position shown in Figure 5. The end members 13 and 14 are then folded down over the side members and the case is ready to be stored or put out of the way.

It is to be understood that these cases are to be made to fit standard size pans such as those used by bakers, although ob Viously they may be made to fit other pans if desired.

After the buns or other bakery products have been sold the merchant simply folds up the case and places it in the pan and set it aside out of the way. When the baker arrives with fresh products all he has to do is to take away the empty pan and set the case up over the full pan which he is delivering and the case will be ready for use by the merchant.

I claim z- A collapsible case to be fitted over the upturned edge of a supporting tray, said case including inwardly foldable end sections, inwardly foldable side sections, a rectangular frame to which the side and end sections are pivotally connected, a pair of hinged covers for the case, each of the sections embodying spaced metallic members between which transparent members are supported, one of the metallic members of each section being bent to provide a flange against which one edge of the adjacent section moves, and the lower edge of the side andend sections being formed with grooves to be positioned over the upturned edge of the tray to hold the sections in their extended positions.
