Objects of the invention are to provide a toilet article in the nature of axshield to prevent cosmetics, such as powder, massage cream, or the like, from coming incontact with the clothes of the user while being aplied to the face or neck, the shield being oldable for convenience in carrying the same and likewise to occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use; to provide a shield of this-character which may be suported by the hand or, if desired, which may e supported on the neck, by suitable means, to permit use of both hands while the shield is in place; and to provide a lightweight shield of simple construction and effective in use for the purpose for which it is designed and intended.

In my issued patent referred to supra a rigid frame is shown upon which a cover is mounted. In the present instance I prefer to employ a collapsible frame consistingof a pair of curved side rods 5 one end of each of which is hingedly connected to a handle 6. The oppositeend of one of said rods 5 is hingedly connected with one end of an upper andneck engaging rod 7, the opposite end of the latter being provided with an opening 8 through which the outer end of the opposite side rod 5 is engaged. It willbe noted, upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings that the outer end of the side rod 5 which is arranged through the opening 8 is reduced and curved to provide a bill 9 which is designed to grip the top rod 7 and prevent casual disengagement of the latter and the side rod with which it isdetachably engflged: Said top red 7; is provided with a 1su bstantially semicircular depression 10 midway ,itsends which is designed :to receive the neck of the user andficonforms to the shape of the neckso as to snugly embrace the latter. The portions of said rod 7 on the opposite sides of the recess 10 provide wings 11 which are adapted to overhang the shoulders of the user in a manner more fully hereinafter described.

It is preferable to make the frame of the shield out of an inherently resilient material such as steel wire so that when the frame is in an open position the parts thereof are un der a slight tension to prevent casual collapse of the frame. The frame is adapted to receive a covering suchas designated at 12 and shown in Fig. l of the drawings. .The covering may be made from any suitable fabric and in view of the inherent resilience of the frame will be normally held stretched or taut so as to provide a relatively stiff body which, however, may be folded with the frame or may be removed with facility when the frame is collapsed if desired. The covering may be ornamented or may be equipped with advertising matter if desired.

In using this device the shield will be placed in substantially the position shown in Fig. 1 with the concave or recess portion 10 of the frame impinging the neck, in which position the wings 11 overhang the shoulders while the handle 6 of the shield is held in the hand of the user so as to permit the shield to be disposed at a right angle to the face of the user. Surplus powder or the like falling from the face of the user will be intercepted by the shield so as to prevent the powder, or other cosmetic applied to the face, from coming in contact with the apparel of the user. The frame can be collapsed by disengaging the hill 9 from the recess 8 of the top rod of the frame thereby permit-ting said top rod to be folded between the two side rods into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.

The form of invention shown in Fig. 4 differs from the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive in that the handle 6 is eliminated and the sides 5 pivotally connected together as indicatedat 13. Instead of supporting the shield by the handle I use instead a neck encircling strap 6 the opposite ends of which are detachably engaged, by

stud and socket or similar fastening means, as indicated at 14, to the frame covering 12. The strap 6 is preferably elastic and is adapted to snugly embrace the neck so as to hold the body of the shield at right angles beneath the chin thereby permitting freedom of both hands for use in applying cosmetics such as powder, massage preparations or the like. Any particles gravitating from the face will be intercepted by the body in an apparent manner.

It is manifest that in a device of this character numerous changes may be made to adapt the device for different uses or to sat- L isfy the caprice of a manufacturer. It is to ELEANOR BERGSTROM.
