This invention relates to a school bag or brief case and has special reference to the provision of a combined school bag and desk or writing pad.
A prime ob'ect of my present invention comprehends t e provision of a brief case or school bag constructed and desi ed to serve when opened as a writing or i sk pad, the school bag having a compartment section, a desk pad section and a pencil rack or holder section coordinated and related so as to produce an attractive and highly serviceable arrangement of the parts.
A further prime object of my present in vention relates to the provision of a school ba or brief case embodyin a novel pencil hofder or rack combined and associated with the school bag handle so as to form a support therefor and a stiffening or reinforcing means for the body of the bag.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter ap ear, my invention consists in the elements and their relation one to the other as hereinafter particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims; reference being had to the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved school bag and writin pad showing the1 same opened or use as a desk or writing P Figure 2 is a fragmentary view shown on an enlarged scale taken in cross-section on the line 2-2 of Fi re 1;
Fi ure 3 is an en view of the brief case or schoo bag, with the parts moved to closed position;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the sam shown on a reduced scale; and
Fi re 5 is a fragmentary view in perspective s owing the combined school bag handle and pencil rack.
As heretofore stated, one of the prime desiderata of the present invention relates to the provision of a brief case or school bag constructed and designed to serve when opened as a writing desk or ad, the school bag having compartment, des pad and pencil holder sections coordinated in a manner to produce an attractive and highly serviceable arrangement of parts. More specifically and having reference to the drawings, the combined school bag and writing pad of my present invention comprises a compartment section generally designated as a, a writing or desk ad section generall designated as b Joined y an intermediate exible fold section or portion 0 the pad section I) being movable about the fold section a into overlying relation with the compartment section a when the parts are moved to closed position, the\ said sections being movable when opened so as to lie generally in a single plane as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings when the school bag is to serve as a writing or desk pad.
he compartment, pad and intermediate sections may be made of an suitable material, such as leather or the li e, the compartment section a being provided with one or more expansible compartments or pockets 10 opening at or adjacent to the fold portion a; and the pad section b being preferably provided with a plurality of corner ockets 11, 11 of the usual triangular shape or receiving one or more blotters 12. The compartment and pad sections may be provided with the usual hasp or matin lock sections 13 and 14 to lock the parts as s own in Figure 4 of the drawings when the sections are moved to closed or overlyin position.
In the combined school bag and writing pad of my invention, the intermediate or fold portion 0 forms the carrying means for the bag sections and the said intermediate fold portion is provided with a pencil rack or holder generall designated as d, the said pencil rack or ho der being arranged interiorly of the fold ortion and bein associated with the schoo ba handle 15, t e latter arranged exteriorly o the fold portion, so as to form a supporting means for the handle and a stiffening or reinforcing means for the fold portion 0 functioning to give body to and to maintain the shape of the school bag or brief case.
In the preferred construction the pencil holder (1 comprises a transverse metal strip 16 having upturned end flanges 17 and 18 (see particularly Figures 1 and 5), the said upturned end flanges beinglprovided with a p urality of concave, or V- aped, notches 19, 19 constructed to receive or seat a lurality of pencils and pen holders, as clear y shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The handle 15 is sup orted by and secured to the metal strip 16 of the pencil holder by means of the fastening elements 20 and 21, each of which, as is clearly shown in the drawings, comprises a yoke member looped about an end of the bag handle 15, the opposite ends of drawings. The pencil holder may also be secured to the transverse stri provided with an intermediate support 22 able to construct the penci holder or rack so that the pencils may be carried by the holder against displacement when the bag is closed, as shown in Fi re 3 of the drawings, and so thatthe pencils may be readily removed from and replaced on the holder during writing use, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. To these ends I prefer to provide a releasable element 23 which for convenience may comprise a resilient or coiled spring yoke member fastened at its opposite ends to the intermediate support 22 and movable to embrace the pencils and pen holders p p, as shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, and releasable as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings to permit ready removal of the pencils from the holder.
With the provision of this combined handle and pencil holder or rack, it will be seen that all stiffening and reinforcing strips heretofore used in brief case construction may be eliminated, the pencil rack forming a suitable and strong support for the handle and reinforcing or stiffening strip for the bag body.
The manner of making and using the combined school bag and writing pad of my invention and the advantages thereof will in the main be fully apparent from the above detailed descri tion thereof. It will be further apparent t at with the construction providing a convenient and serviceable arrangement of parts is produced both when the bag is employed for carrying books, stationery and the like and when the same is employed as a writing support or desk device. When the parts are moved to open position the pencil holder occupies a position intermediate the compartment section and the writing pad or support and is located at the head or top of the latter so as to be related therewith for ready accessibility by the writer. Moreover with the arrangement provided and with the expansible pocket opening at the fold section a maximum of convenience is afforded, the compartment being readily reached for removal of books, stationery or the like during writing use of the device, as is exemplified in Figure 1 of the drawings. Furthermore, by the provision of the combined pen- 1b cil rack and brief case handle, the former serving as a sup ort and reinforcing means for the latter, sti ening strips commonly em ployed in brief case structures are entirel eliminated and an inexpensive pencil rack or holder capable of manufacture and assembly at low cost is afforded. Also with the 16. It is desirparts relatively arranged as shown and described the sections may be moved to closed condition without interference, and the normal carrying capacity of the bag is retained or maintained.
While I have shown and described my invention in the preferred form, it will be further apparent that numerous changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined in the following claims.
