This invention relates to improvements in exercising apparatus of-that type which comprises one or more elastic members connected at the ends thereof to a pair of handles, and
it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
Among the objects of'this invention, is:
To provide simple, eiiicient and reliable means whereby the ends of a single strip of elastic material or of two or more strips of elastic material may be secured properly to a pair of handles and whereby in so securing the elastic material undue clamping or gripping strain may not be put on such n'iaterial.

The means by whichathe foregoing and other objects are accomplished, and the manner of their accomplishment will readily be understood from the following specification on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary portion of one of the handles showing a modified form of strap securing means.

Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals, 10 is an elastic member which may be made up of one or more flat strips or bands of rubber, and 11 are two handles therefor. Each handle comprises a hand grip 12 which preferably is substantially circular in cross section, and a pair of side bars 13 which are integral with a transverse bar 14 which bar is substantially parallel with the rip 12 and which bar has one or more pins I5 which are integral with and project therefrom. to the bar 14:, isa cover plate 16 which is adapted toturn about a hinge pin 17 and has its opposite end securedby a latch l8,which latch is preferably a'flat steel spring secured to the bar 14 as by the screw 19. Mounted in the cover 16 is a thumb screw 20, which thumb screw carries 'an adjustable filler plate 21, which plate is adapted to hold the elastic strip flat against the transverse bar.
Each of the elastic strips 22, is provided at holes 23 corresponding in desired the edges of these holes may be reinforced with eyelets 2a which preferablyare of thin metal, or in some other desired man- In Figs. 4 and 5, I show a modified form of handle having as before a cross bar 14 and pins 15 but having a cover 25 turning about a pin 26 at right angles to'the general plane of the handle instead'of parallel thereto-as =a't first shown. -The' opposite end of this bar may be secured as by a thumb screw 27. 28 is a loose filler plate which as in the former case holds the elastic plate flat against the transverse bar.
To connect the handles 11 to the elastic strips 22, the cover plates are released and turned about their hinge pins. The pins on the transverse bars are passed through the holes in the elastic strips and in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the cover is closed and latched and the filler plates adjusted to rest on the strip. If however the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is used, one or more of the loose filler plates as may be needed is placed on the elastic strip or strips and the cover closed and latched.
When so secured the elastic strips are not clamped and damaged as is necessary where theyare secured by friction, but they are positively held by the pins which the body of the material surrounds, thus giving a definite attachment of the parts.
It will of course be understood that the number of pins which may be used is optional and that the method of reinforcement of the holes, if any is typical only. I wish it therefore definitely understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the specific details shown except as the same may be hereinafter set out in the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. An exerciser of the character described,
comprising a pair of handles and an elastic strip having a -plurality of holes in each end thereof, said handles each having a-'transverse bar, a plurality of pins, projecting from said bar, corresponding in size, numberand spacing to the holes insaid elastic strip, a cover plate hinged to said transverse bar, a latch therefor, and a filler plate holding said elastic strip flat against said transverse bar.
2. An exerciser of the character described, comprising a pair of handles and a plurality ofelastic strips each having-a plurality of holes in each end thereof, said handles each having a transverse bar,- a plurality of pins, projecting from said bar, corresponding in size, number and spacing to the holes in said elastic strips, a cover plate hinged to said transverse bar, a latch therefor, and a filler plate holding saidtelast-ic strips flat against said transverse bar.
3. An exerciser of the character described, comprising a pair of handles and an elastic strip having a plurality of holes near each' end thereof, each of said handles having a transverse bar with a plurality of pins projecting therefrom, conforming in size, num-' her and spacing to said holes, and means for holding said elastic strip flat against said transverse'bar. '- 4. An exerciser of-the character described, comprising a pair of handles, an elastic strip having a plurality of holes near each end ing a transverse bar with a forholding said elastic strip fiat against said transverse bar.
5. An exerciser of the character described, comprising a pair of handles and an elastic strip having a plurality of holes in each end thereof, said handles each having a transverse bar, a plurality of pins projecting therefrom corresponding in size, number and spacing to the holes in said elastic strip; a cover plate hinged to said transverse bar, a latch therefor, a filler plate and means for adj ustingsaid filler plate to hold said elastic strip flat against said transverse bar.
6. An exerciser of the character described, comprising a pair of handles and a plurality of elastic strips each having a plurality of holes near each end thereof, each of'said handles having a transverse bar with a plurality of pins projecting therefrom, conforming in size, number andspacing to said holes,a'nd means for holding said elastic strips flat against said transverse bar.
