RECEPTACLE Filed D60. l0, 1928 o INVENTOR.
/Vaf/s Hiss/74N A TTORNEY.
Patented Oct. 8, 1929 UNITEDY STATES MORRIS PASSMAN, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK REGEPTACLE Application led December 10, 1928. Serial No. 325,055.
This invention relates to receptacles of the type adapted to receive dust-producing matter, and particularly to ash cans and powdered chemical containers. The main object of this invention is to provide means to keep confined within the receptacle the dust arising from the deposited mass during the depositing or shoveling process. Other objects will appear from the description hereinafter given.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the invention, showing the door held open by a refuse-laden shovel.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front view of the receptacle with the doorv closed.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan of my invention.
In the drawings, the body portion 1 of the receptacle is covered by the lid or cover 2,
which has a duct 3 the mouth or outside opening 4 of which communicates with the interior of the receptacle through the opening 5. The said duct has two upright walls 6 and 7 the forward edges 8 and 9 of which are bent to slidably receive and guide the door `10. This door, as shown, is movable vertically along the wall 11, which contains said outside opening 4.
The springs 12 and 13 are anchored to the duct at 14 and 15 respectively, and are secured to the door 10 at 16 and 17 respectively. These springs are of such a length and tension as to normally keep the said door in position over the entire area of the mouth 4, and against the wall 11. The outwardly projecting member or flange 18 is adapted for engagement with a shovel or refuse depositing means.
To operate this device, the laden shovel 19 is placed upon the uppersurface of.
As soon as the shovel is removed from the flange 18, the door 10 will be slidably brought back to its normal and closed position by the action of the springs 12 and 13,-the diagonal slope of these springs being effective in keeping the door in abutment with the wall 11. In this manner the door is automatically sealed, and the column of dust arising from the deposited mass within the body portion 1 is kept within the confines of the receptacle.
The outwardly projecting member 18 should be flush with the upper edge of the door so as to permit an uninterrupted continuity in the process of opening the door and projecting the shovel through the opening. An economical construction embodying this requirement isthat shown in the drawings, where the ange 18 is integral with the door.
Thedrawings and description herein set forth refer to but one of many different mechanical forms that may be embodied in my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A receptacle of the class described comprising a body portion and a cover in detachable engagement therewith, said cover having a laterally enclosed open-ended duct communicating between the exteriory and the interior of said receptacle, the exterior opening of said duct having in slidable engagement therewith a door being yieldably held in closed position over the said exterior opening by a plurality of springs anchored to said duct and secured to said door, said door being provided with outwardly projecting means adapted for engagement with dooropening and shoveling means.
2. In a receptacle of the class described, a duct lcommunicating with the interior of said receptacle, said duct having two uprightl lateral walls the forward edges of which are bent to receive and guide, for
slidable engagement, the sides of a door adapted to cover the outside opening of said duct, said door being yieldably held over and in abutment with said outside opening by a plurality of diagonally disposed springs anchored to said duct and secured to said door, said door being provided at its upper extremity With an outwardly projecting flange. f
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature.
MORRIS PASSMAN.
