Description

H. N. CROPSEY INVALID SUPPORT Filed Oct. 10, 1927 Oct. l15, 1929.
ATTOR NEY (fre lNVENToR Patented Oct. 15, 1929 cierren STATES HENRY N. cieorsEY, or ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA INVALID SUPPORT Application filed October 10, 1927. Serial No. 225,098.
This invention relates to a device for furnishing support to an invalid or bed-ridden person and has for its object the provision of means whereby a person physically unable to sit upright may be assisted in comfortably maintaining such position.
A further object is the provision of means for adjustably mounting the several supporting members to suit persons of various heights.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of resilient means for mounting the supports thereby to add to the comfort of the individual using the device.
- lvVith the foregoing and other objects in o view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In'the drawing:V
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the device as adapted for use on a bed.
Figure 2 is a plan View on an enlarged scale over Figure 1, there being parts shown in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 represents a bed frame. At 2 is shown a y bracket in the foiin of a combined clamp and socket member, the clamp engages an upright portion of the bed frame and the socket receives one leg of a supporting bar or arm 3, a set screw elserviiig to hold the leg in .any position of adjustment. Mounted on the other leg of the supporting bar or arm 8 are bearing members 5 and 6, each provided withA means by which to be secured to the-supporting bar or arm in predetermined rspaced relation. T he members' and 6 are also provided with means for attaching pendant resilient members 7 and 8.
A frame designated generally by the reference character 9 comprising angular supporting members or sideA rails 20, body sup-` ports 11 and arm rests 12, is mounted on the resilient member 7, The, side railsv 2O are right angled or L shaped members having a short leg y21 and a long leg 22. The short leg 21 of each side rail is adjustably mounted in a bearing sleeve 10. Securing devices suchl as the set screws 10 retain the side rails in adjusted position in the sleeve. The long leg 22 of the member 2() has adj ustably mounted thereon a body support 11 which is adapted to be placed under the arm pitof a person and an arm rest 12 forthe support of the patients forearm. It will be seen that the two sections ofthe frame' 9 may be adjusted later# ally with respect to each other and the body support-s and `arm rests have vertical and lateral swinging adjustment. Set screws 23 or the like providermeans for securing the body supports and the arm rests to the legs 22, and to permit lateralswinging adjustment of said members on the leg. Y The resilient member 8 carries a bearing 13 similar to the member 10 and has adjust; ably mounted thereon a head suspension member 14, whiclrconsists Vof angular supporting 7 members 15 adjustably mounted in the bearing 13. Pivotally mounted on the lower end of the vertical leg of the supports 15 are head engaging rests 16, curved Vto fit about the neck of the wearer and pivoted together at the rear.
Thus by moving the members 15 in the U bearing 13 the rests 16 may be adjusted to fit the neck of a person and support the head.
yThe several parts adapted to come into contact with the body of the wearer will of course 55 be provided` with padding to render the same comfortable. v
It will be seen that the invention embodies a device that is capable of universal adjust.- ment wit-hin certain limits, to the requireoc ments of a. person either partially or completely rendered physically unable to support himself and that it will add to the coml fort and convenience of such incapacitated person. t5
I claim: j 1. In a device of the class described a bracket, a supporting bar adj ustably mounted on the bracket, a frame resiliently mounted on the supporting bar, body supports on the frame, head supporting means on the supporting bar and means for adjusting the head support and the body support toward and away from each other in a horizontal plane. Y
2. In a device of the class described a bracket, a supporting bar adj ustably mounted in the bracket, bod'y and arm supports on the supporting bar, a head support comprising side members pivotally mounted for swinging movement toward each other and means for adjusting the body and arm supports and the head support longitudinally of the supporting bar.
3. In a device of the class described, a iframe comprising` a sleeve, angular supporting members adjustably mounted in the sleeve for longitudinal movement therein, body supports on the angular supporting members, arm supports on the angular supporting members, means tor adjusting the body and arm supports independently with respect to each other, a supporting bar for carrying the frame, a bracket for support-ing the bar and means for securing and adjusting the bracket on a bed.
ll, In a device of the class described, a bracket, ay supporting bar comprising angularly disposed legs carried by the bracket, means for adjusting the .supporting bar with respect` to the bracket, a 'frame supported by one of the legs, arm supporting means on the frame, body supporting means on the frame, head supporting mechanism on one angularly disposed leg, and means for adjustment of the head support and the frame along the leg.
In testimony whereof I alli); my signature.
HENRY N. CROPSEY.
