JONES 6 BREAST SUPPORT Filed Dec. 12, 1929' 2 Shuts-Shoot 2 /NVE/ O F'OKTDrCEL CL Jon 5,6 'I/ Patented Sept. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES FORIDYCE CHARLES JONES, OF PADDINGTON, LONDON, ENGLAND BREAST SUPPORT Application filed December 12 1929, Serial No. 413,557, and in Great Britain November 2, 1928.
This inventionrelates to breast-supporting devices and more particularlyto the kind of device which comprises a pair of substantially inextensible ockets connected together by a front insert 0 elastic, said device having means, such as wrap-round members and/or shoulder straps, for securing it to the wearer.
The present invention provides an article of this nature having an elastic area or inset (or areas) so shaped and arranged between a pair of non-extensible breast covering areas or pockets, that the breasts are adequately supported without undue pressure, whilst the device lies snugly and flatly against the body at the surrounding areas, especially forming a perfect resilient and close fit between the breasts at or below the sternum.
, The invention consists in a pair of pockets joined together at a point or short seam at the front, or integrally made in one piece and having an inverted V-shape opening between the pockets containing a resilient insert constituting an elastic diaphragm.
The elastic material used is advantageously, although not necessarily, cut or moulded sheet rubber, and another advantage of such an insert as described later, is the slight expansion-permitted over the diaphragm when breathing. At this central area, also, the resiliency of the elastic area, and its close-fitting design, tends to flatten the plump part sometimes occurring with certain types.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, some embodiments thereof will be described in greater detail with the aid of the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 shows one embodiment, spread out.
Figures 2 and 3 arefront and back views respectively of the form according to Figure 1 when in position on the wearer.
Figure 4 is a view showing the main part ofa further embodiment, side extensions and various straps having been omitted for convenience.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a further embodiment.
Referring firstly to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the breast-support, according to the invention, comprises broadly a pair of non-extensible described.
breast covers or pockets 1 and 2'ada ted to be held in position by tapes or straps w ereby they are neatly fitted close to the breasts all round including the region of the sternum. therebetween. For instance, silk or other fabric supports of approximate rhombic outline as shown may be relatively disposed to lie with a corner (3 and 4 respectively) of each attached together, presentin two upwardly projecting corners with a attened V or U opening 13 therehetween at the top (or this may be cut to present a straight, or other required design at the top), and an inverted V at the bottom. Shoulder straps 5 are attached at each side, viz ::trom an upper corner 3 (or 4) to an outside corner 6 (or 7). Waist or body straps or tapes 8 and 9 (elastic or partly elastic if desired) are also attached one at each side; these latter are for taking round the back of the body and attaching to the front of the device;
The inverted V opening between the two breast covers 1 and 2 is filled in with a triangular insert of rubber 10, the two lower corners of the base thereof being eyeleted, tabbed, or otherwise formed as at 11 and 12 as attaching means for the aforesaid waist straps 8 and 9, the left-hand waist'st-rap 8 (locking from the front)--see Figure 1 especiallypassing round the wearers back and being secured to the right-hand corner 12 of p the insertion 10, and right-hand strap 9 being secured at 11. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate this fastening method.
The said breast-covers have been described as rhombic for convenience of description; they may be square, rectangular, round, oval or otherwise shaped to leave the upper V or desired configuration at the top, and the inverted V-shape lower opening to take the insert. In the alternative shapes, the straps and tapes would be secured at appropriate places to produce a close fitting equivalent to the fitting when attached at corners as The covers 1 and 2 are tucked or prepared in any way to form them into pockets, and when straight edges 14; and 15 are presented at the top to form the V or U, the slope of the lines it and 15 may be such that it inclines to the horizontal at an angle, which, if the edge 14 or 15 were produced, 'it would lie above the outside (i. e. above) corner of the garment 6 or 7 towards which it is inclined. This is a refinement of construction, however, of an optional nature. 1
In addition to the central insert of rubber or the like 10 already mentioned, there may be attached to the outside of the breastcovers respectively, an armpit resilient piece, preferably triangular in shape, point directed outwardly, and base (curved or not) attached to the breast-cover.
Figure 4 shows an elastic insert in the form of strips 16 replacing the sheet 10 of Figure 1. In such a modification, the bottom strip 16 only would be employed, the rest remaining either open, or filled in with the pocket material pleated to permit extension.
Figure 5 illustrates an alternative method of fastening, dispensing with the long crossover ends 6 and 7 and straps 8 and 9 (see Figure 3), and employing a simple back fastening 17.
When a breast-support, as illustrated, is put under tension by pulling along the bottom thereof, such as by pulling on the points 11 and 12, the diaphragm 10 tightly and snugly flattens or fits the body of the wearer between the breasts, and the upwardly converging sides of the insertion 10 assume a concave curve, fitting the respective breast. At the same time, the inextensible pockets form an adequate corrective support with no elastic pressure directly applied to or under the breasts.
I claim A breast support comprising a pair of substantially inextensible members having breast supporting pockets and stitched together at their upper inner corners to provide a substantially inverted V-shaped'opening therebetween and the ends of said members being tapered into strip-like formation to provide body encircling attaching strips, a substantially triangular elastic section secured in said opening and having integral ears provided with button holes, and buttons on the ends of said straps for entering said button holes.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my slgnature hereto this 26th day of November,
FORDYCE CHARLES JONES.
