Description

Oct. 21, 1930. F. E. KUECHLER PAPER CUTTER OR TRIMMER Filed'April 15, 1929 /n {Pen Patented Oct. 21, 1930 PATENT OFFICE.
ran!) E. KUECHLER, or ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI PAPER CUTTER OR TRIMMER Application filed April 15,
This invention relates to devices or machines for use in cutting or trimming paper to the width desired.
An object of the invention is to provide an improvedidevice or machine for use in cutting or trimming paper and includinga relatively light portable frame capable of easy operation and movement by hand and having a cutting tool mounted thereon for cutting or trimming the paper, in combination with a device functioning as a guide and support for said frame for engagementwith a gage or track to guide the device or machine during operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device or machine of the type and character and embodying the features of construction last above mentioned and provided with antifriction rollers or elements for operating upon the gage or track during manipulation of the device.
Other objects will appear from the follow-' ing description, reference being madeto the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a plan View of myimproved cutting or trimming device. I
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the sup,- porting guide operating on a gage or track.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the-opposite side ofthe device. I
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 2. H
The frame of my improved device or machine comprises a body 1 which, if desired, maybe cast and provided on its outer side with a boss 2. A curved flange 3 ,isforined integral with the inner side of the body 1 and is extendedat the rearto form aseat {Lfor a part of the hand of the operator. The extended seat 4 and a part of the outside-of the body at the rear have .an appropriately curved flange 5, the upper surface of'which is flush with and'forms-a part of the hand rest or handle. The front end of the outside flange 5 is formed with a curved wall 6 constituting a rest for one of the fingers of the hand. Thus the upper portion of the frame comprising the parts 45 and the formation 6 constitute a handle and this handle is shaped 1929. Serial No. 355,050.
properly for the engagement by the hand in operating the device or machine. 7
The inner side of the body 2 is formed with a ball bearing recess 7 and a bearing enclosure 8 is attached to the outer side of the body by screws 9 which are removable and replaceable in order to permit detachment, replacement and repair of the parts.
An axle 10 passes through the boss 2 and has secured on its inner end a bearing abutment 11 and on its outer end a duplicate hearing abutment 12. These bearing abutments 11 and 12 may be screwed on the axle 10 as shown or otherwise secured thereto in spaced relationship. By screwing these abutments ll'and 12 on the axle 10 the assembly of the device is facilitated and expedited. For, when assembling the device the bearing abutment 11 may first be screwed on the axle 10 and said axle passed through the hole in the boss 2 to a position in which the abutment 11 e is enclosed within the recess 7. Then the abutment 12 may end of the axle 10.
A ball bearing device 13- is mounted between the abutment 10 and the adjacent .surface of the boss 2 and a similar ball bearing device 14 is mounted between the abutment 12 and the bearing support 8. The antifriction elements of the ball bearing 13 operate against the abutment 11 and against the adj acent surfaces of the boss 2,while the antifriction elements of the bearing 14 operate against theabutment 12 and the adjacentsurface of the bearingsupport 8. Thus these bearings 13 and 14; functionas journal bearingsfor the axle 10 and also as thrust bearings preventing longitudinal movement of said axle in either direction. The outerend of the axle 10 has a nut 15 screwed thereon against a washer 16 which is clamped against the endof the abutment 12. v
be screwed onto the'outer 1 A cutting disc l7 forthe paper isirotatively mounted on the inner end of the axle 10. A
washer 18 is mounted on the axle 10 between the disc 17 and the end of thebearing abutment 11. A washer 19 is clamped against said endof the axle lObya screw2o-which is screwed intothe inner endof the axle 10. The screw 20 and washer 19 the cutting 17 011 the axle 10 and are removable and replaceable to permit separation of the parts for any desired purpose. The cutting disc 17 is esentially of a diameter so that its lower peripheral portion is always well below the lower edge of the body 1, as must be clear from Figs. 3 and 4.
The supporting guide for this device or machine comprises a bar 21 mounted on a pivot 22 in the front end of the body 1 beyond and out of contact with the disc 17. The opposite end of the bar 21 is connected with. the body 1 by a screw 23 passing through an arcuate slot 24 that is concentric with the axis of the pivot 22. The screw 23 is screwed into the inner side of the end portion of the bar 21 and thus permits a turning movement of said part about the axis of said pivot 22 and limits extent of such turning movement. A leaf spring 25 has its front lower end at tached to the bar 21 by a screw 26 and its rear end engaged against the under side of the handle part 4 (Fig. 2). The power and energy of said spring 25 is exerted and utilized to raise the rear end of the body 1 to the full extent permitted by the screw 23. But said spring 25 will yield to permit the rear end of the body'l to move downwardly. The pivot 22 and the screw 23 are removable and replaceable to permit detachment of the bar 21 from the frame. The inner side edge of the bar 21 is notched at 27 to avoid contact with the head of the screw 20. A roller 28 is mounted on an axle 29 supported by an arm 30 projecting rearwardly from the rear end of thebar 21. The axle 29 is parallel with the axle 10. A similar roller 31 is mounted on an axle 32 projecting laterally from an arm 33 extending from the front end of the bar 21. The axle 32 is parallel with the axles 10 and 29.
A plate 34 is attached to the outer side edge of the bar 21 by screws 35 which are removable and replaceable in order to permit detachment and replacement of the plate 3-1. The lower edge of the plate 3 1 extends downwardly beyond the lower side of the bar 21 and is formed with an inwardly turned flange 36 for engagement under the flange 37 of the track guide or gage 38.
In use the track guide or gage 38 which is in the form of an elongated bar is placed upon the paper with the edge 39 at the line along which to cut or trim the paper; The cutting device or machine is then placed upon the track guide or gage 38 by hooking the flange 36 under the lip or flange 37 of the track guide or gage, in which position the rollers 28 and 32 are upon the track guide or gage and form antifriction devices facilitating the movement of the machine. In the adjustment mentioned the flat surface of the cutter 17 is against the edge 39 and cannot deviate therefrom appreciably. WVhen the machine is thus placed upon the track, pressure is applied by the hand to the handle portion 47-5 of the machine so as to overcome the resistance of the spring 25 and push the lower edge of the cutter 17 into and through the paper. Then the machine is moved along the track or gage, causing the cutter 17 to cut or trim the paper along the line at the edge 39.
In practice I have found that this machine greatly facilitates and expedites the cutting or trimming of wall paper and the work can be performed with greater precision than by other devices with which I am familiar. I am aware that the construction and arrangement of the parts may be varied without departure from the nature and principle of the invention. 1 do not restrict myself unessentially or otherwise thanas required by the appended claims.
I claim 1. A device of the character describedcomprising a frame body, an axle extending through said frame body, two spaced'abutments rigid on said axle, bearings mounted between said abutments and the frame body and cooperating therewith to support said axle, a cutting disc rigid on one end of said axle and projecting below the plane of the lower side of said frame body, a bar pivotally connected with the front portion of said frame body, rollers supported by said bar adjacent to the ends thereof, a flange projecting laterally from the upper portion of the frame body above said cutting disc and extending toward the rear of said frame body, and a spring between said flange and said bar pressing the rear end of the bar downwardly from said flange.
2. A device of the character described comprising a frame body, an axle extending through said frame body, two spaced abutments rigid on said axle, bearings mounted between said abutments and-the frame body and cooperating therewith to support said axle,'a cutting disc rigid on one end of said axle and projecting below the plane of the 1 lower side of said frame body, a bar pivotally connected with the front portion of said frame body, rollers supported by said bar adjacent to the ends thereof, a flange projecting laterally from the upper portion of the f frame body above said cutting disc and extending toward the rear of said frame body, a spring between said flange and said bar pressing the rear end of the bar downwardly from said flange, and an element in connection with said bar for engaging a guide to hold said device in connection therewith.
