Description
G. HAUCKJ WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Patented May 3011876.
No.178,0Z.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HAUOK, or MEOHANIOSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FQR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,002, dated May 30, 1876; application filed Mayl, 1876.
To all whom 215 may concern:
Be-it known that I, GEORGE HAUGK, of Mechanicsburg, in'the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enableothers skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters, of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the construction of a hub, cast of metal, in a single piece, and a spoke with a Wedge-shaped tenon, so adapted that when the spoke is driven home a space will be left between the inner extremity of the spoke and the axle-box. I
The object of this construction and arrangement is to allow suflicient room for the shrinkage of the tire of the wheel.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of m y hub, through the line a: m of Fig. 2. Fig. 2.is a longitudinal section of the same, through the line y 3 Fig. l.'- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the spokes.
My hub is cast solid, in one. single piece,
-and consists of a central axle-box, A, with two circumferential flanges, B B, a suitable distance apart. Between these flanges are triangular or wedgeshaped pieces 0 O,which form mortises a a for the insertion of the spokes D.
The inner ends of the triangular pieces (lare rounded, as shown, and do not reach entirely to the axle-box A, but leave an open circular space,.b, around the same. The nlortises a a are formed with parallel sides, and the inner ends of the spokes are made slightly tapering,
and are to be driven firmly into said mortises. The spokes have no shoulders to bear against the outer edges of the pieces 0 G, and when the tire shrinks the spokes will be forced thereby still farther into the hub, and thus become still more firm therein. H w
I am aware of the patent-of Race and Hally, dated January 30, 1855, for vehicle-wheels; I therefore do not claim what is contained therein.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The solid metallic hub, comprising axle-box A, circumferential flanges B,and wedge-shaped divisions-O, forming annular space b, in combination with spokes D, havinginclined tenons, the inner extremity of the spokes not impinging upon the box, the space thereby made allowing for the shrinkage of the tire, as shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention 1 afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEO. HAUOK.
