' Ascending on skis in hilly or mountainous places is extremely hard. The ski is apt to slip back, so that the skier'will soon get tired.
It also frequently happens that a novice.
5 at skiing, when descending,
downhill across a forest, or on stony ground, will lose the command of his skis, and rush into obstacles, whereby serious accidents may occur. i
overcome these drawbacks, by increasing the friction of skis. Arrangements in. which strips of sealskin or the like'are fastened-to the bottom faces of the wooden runners are known. Such skins, however are expensive, and liable to wear away when getting wet and, subsequently, freezing in. Moreover, these sealskin strips are either pasted on or otherwise securedto the skis by some compli cated device by which. an eventually present anti-friction wax layer will be injured.
The device according to the invention comprises a very great number of metal teeth fastened to the bottom of the skis. These metal teeth or barbs are similar to the cards used in textile works, and, like them, are best stuck through a strip of leather or the like, which is fastened to the ski by means of straps, or lace. facture of these teeth or barbs'has, preferably, a triangular cross section, and theteeth are fastened to the skis in a manner'which,
" when the skier'is progressing, will permit one one edge of the triangle to cut the snow, while the opposite side willoppose considerable resistance to slipping downhill.
In the drawing, vention is shown by way of example. Figure 1 is a view of the non-slipdevice seen from below, Figure 2' is a section on the line I-.I of Fig. 1. Figure 3 shows a cross section of the wire used for the manufacture of said teeth, on anenlargedscale, the; direction'of the course being indicated by an arrow. Numerous wlre teeth 2 are run, in rows, through a strip of'leather or the like 1. The simplest way to effect this is similar to the manner in which this is accomplished in cards, namely,"
to bend bits of wire to U-form and stick said wires throughthe strip 1. The ends of the or traveling The object of the present invention is to' The wire used for the manubits of wire are bevelled, and the teeth are run in such a manner that the angle contained between them and the directionof the course indicated by the arrow A is an obtuse angle on. To protect said leather strip from wear, a 1 metal sheet maybe applied to the bottom face of said strip, from which sheet the teeth will.
project.
The fastening of the strip 1 to a ski may be effected by pasting to the back of thestrip a support 3 of waterproof fabric, to which support straps 4 and 5 are attached. To the ends of the straps' kbuckles are secured, by which straps 4; and 5 can be connected'to each other. Bymeans of said straps the non-slip tached, or removed, in a few moments. Said non-slip device is therefore particularly adapted for short escents, say, in training fields or for travelling on hilly ground. Owe
ing to its small size, a pair of such non-slip dev1ces, after removal, may be tucked into a rucksack, or pocket of a-coat, or fastenedto the belt, so as to bealways ready' for use. Said device doesnot injure an eventually present non-friction wax layer.
WVhat I claim is: i 1. A non-slipdevice for use with prising metal teeth adapted to be fastened to the bottom of said skis, said teeth having a triangular cross section. V
2. A non-slip device strip of leather secured thereto and metal teeth secured to said strip of leather.
3. A non-slip device for use with skis comprising a support strip of leather secured to said support, metal teeth secured to said strip of leather and skis comfor use with skis com-- 1 prising a support of water-proof fabric, a an embodiment of the 111- of water-proof fabric,.a'
means attached to said support for securing said device to a ski.
4:. A non-slip device for use with skis comprising a'support of water-proof fabric, a strip of leather secured to said support, metal teeth secured to said strip'of leather and straps attached to said support. M
5. A non-slip device for use with skis comprising a strip of leather, metal teeth secured to said strip of leather and the free ends of said teeth being inclined with respect to the surface of said strip of leather.
6. .A nen-slip device for use With skis comprising a support, a strip of leather secured 1 to said support, metal teeth secured to said strip of leather, straps attached to said sup port and buckles secured to said straps Whereby said straps may be connected to one another for securing said device to said skis.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ALOIS ELSNER.
