IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,132, dated July 25, 1876; application filed January 12, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. HOARD and ANDREW J. BAsTINE, each of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Attachment to Bottles, said attachment being applied to all kinds of glass bottles, earthen jugs, or vessels of any shape, as may be desired; and that the following is afull, clear, and precise description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this description and specification.

This invention consists of an inclosure or box on one or more, sides orbottom of any kind of a bottle, it being formed by having, when the bottle is cast or molded, a flange,

groove, or way, cast at each edge or side of a.

concave indenture or panel of the bottle, running parallel, each flange, groove, or way, to incline in opposite directions, as represented bythe two flanges marked A, in Fig. 2.

The flanges at the ends of the concave may not incline either way, but may be perfectly even. B is a slide or cover made of glass, tin, brass, gutta-percha, or any other suitable material, with curved edges to match or correspond with the edges'ot the flange or groove A, sb that by sliding the cover B with the edges catching over the flanges A, as seen in Fig. 1, it forms an inclosure or box. It could also be formed by having the flanges incline toward each other and pushing a slide down between them, or a groove could be cast or molded in the bottle, and the cover be made to spring over and clasp tight within the groove.

This attachment can be applied to any shaped bottle-round or square-for the purpose of containing an advertisement, circular. or pamphlet of any kind, or directions for using any ingredients which the bottle may contain, or to hold a medicinal powder, drug, or cosmetic of any kind as may be required by a patent-medicine proprietor or advertiser.

The object of our invention is to enable an advertising medium of any description or valuable recipe to accompany a bottle, it being folded neatly in said inclosure or box and sealed therein, it going directly into the hands of the consumer without said bottle being wrapped or inclosed in printed sheets, which are liable tobe torn, soiled, and destroyed; therefore, I

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The construction of an attachment or box in combination with a bottle, jug, or jar, made of glass or other material, in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.
