PACKING AND DISPLAY CONTAINER Filed May 13, 1929 Patented Aug. 4, 1931- UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE PACKING AND DISPLAY CONTAINER Application filed Kay 13, 1929. Serial- No. 362,741.
The present invention consists of improvements in packing containers for merchandise and relates more particularly to a type of box which for convenience will be .5 called a pre-folded vbox; viz: one in which the blank is cut out, scored and folded completely in a flat position so that the operator, by simple and quick operations, may readily set the box up from the flat position into an erect condition ready to receive the merchandise. Boxes of this kind have previously been proposed which are composed of two members, one telescoping over the other to form a cover for the inner member or tray member which contains the merchandise.
Various forms of this box have been in common use and the majority have double glued side walls and double folding end sections. The side wall sections and the end wall sections are united together by corner pieces which are arranged to fold diagonally. The blanks are pre-folded, as stated, so that the only operation required is to apply pressure to both ends to fold the corner pieces inwardly to raise the end and side walls into a vertical position. Extensions-of the end sections are then turned down and various locking devices have been contrived to retain the end walls in their folded position and thereby securely hold the box member in its set up position.
According to the present invention, the principle of a pre-folded box, as above briefly described, is employed with the addition of improvements by means of which a one piece box is produced having the tray member and cover integral and which cover member is adaptable for use as a display or advertising medium.
An embodiment of the invention will be described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved box in its complete setup position;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the blank, and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the same blank in its pre-folded flat position.
Referring to said drawings, more particularly to Figure 2, herein the complete blank is shown and which blank consists of two mam integral sections, 1 and 2, of which 1 is the body section and 2 is a hinged extension therefrom. The body member 1 is divided by the usual creases into a number of sections of which 3-4 form the side walls and 56, the end walls. These sections are connected together by corner pieces or sections 7, the latter being scored or partly cut diagonally on the line 8 so as to readily fold. The side sections 34 are arranged to be folded over and glued so that the sections 4 will lie on top of the sections 3 in a manner so that when the box is set up, section 4 forms the inner wall and sections 3 form the outer wall. The sections 4 preferably have projecting ends 9 which when folded form reenforced or double corners for the container. The sections 4 also are cut out at the ends to 7 form recesses 10 preferably square or elon- 7o gated and end sections 5-6 carry projecting tongues 11 which, when the box is folded, are received in the recesses 10. The sections 4 also have cut out portions 12 arranged, Whenthe box is folded, to provide inwardly extending stops or flanges employed for the purpose hereinafter described.
The extension 2 has an end flap 13 and side flaps 14 and which extension 2 is connected to the ends of the body sect-ion by intermediate section 15. The extension 2 may, if desired, have a cutout 16 which stands above the center folding line 17 when said extension is folded to form a display medium' In the operation of assembling the blank, 8 it will be understood that the main part of the assembling is done by automatic machine work, the first operation being to glue the side walls 4 along the outer edge and folding the side walls over on to the walls 3. The next operation is to fold the double side walls over the body section and the final machine operation is then to fold the end sections so that they will lie over the body section and the folded side sections. In this pre-folded flat position, as shown in Figure 3, the cover or extension member lies on top of the other folded sections.
' The blanks folded in the manner as above described are delivered in that condition to 1 the consumer and when it is desired to set up the boxes to receive the merchandise, the operator need only apply pressure to the two ends of the folded blank so as to bend the corner sections inwardly and thereby raise the side and end sections and then the free ends of the latter are folded over the folded corner sections so that the tongues 11 are engaged in the recesses lO'thereby holding the box in the set up position. The cover member is brought into the same plane as the top edge of the side and end walls b means of the intermediate section 15 whic '1 folds against the back wall of the box. To close the box, the extension 2 lies on top of the box with the side and end flaps 1413 folded into the sides and end of the box. When it is desired to utilize the cover as a display, said out outis folded on the line 17 so as'to be folded in the position shown in Figure 1. The side tabs or flanges 12 will act as stops to retain the folded cover in an erect position as shown.
Various modifications may be made in carrying out the details of the invention hereinbefore described and it is to be understood that any modification coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered thereby.
I claim- 1. A pre-folded packing and display container of the character described consisting of a tray member and an integral cover member therefor, said members being composed of a blank comprising a body portion and a main end extension thereof forming said cover, said body portion being divided into inner sections forming the side and end walls of the container, said sections being connected by diagonally folding corner pieces, outer sections extending from said inner sections forming inner end and side walls, said outer sections having registering retentive means for retaining the container in its erected position, an intermediate section connecting the.
cover forming extension withsaid body portion and said intermediate section being arranged to fold against the back wall of the container to bring and retain said cover member in the same plane with the top edges of said tray member when the latter is in its erected position.
2. A pre-folded packing and display container of the character described consisting of a tray member and a cover therefor all composed of a single blank, said blank comprising a body and extended sections initially folded by doubling one section over the other and then folded so as to lie flat over said body, said extended sections forming the end and side walls of the container and being connected together by diagonally folding corner pieces, said extended sections having means comprising recesses and registering tongues for retaining the walls of the container in the erected position, said cover being connected to one of said extended sections by an intermediate section, said blank being further folded into a position wherem said cover and folded extended sections lie in a flat position over said body brought to bear on the ends of the pre-folded blank, said corner sections fold inwardly to raise the end and side walls into a vertical position and said intermediate section being folded to bring the cover in the same plane as the top edges of the side and end walls.
3. A "pre-folded packing and display container of the character described consisting of a tray member and a cover therefor all composed of a'single blank, said blank comprising a body and extended sections initially folded by doubling one section over the other and then folded so as'to lie flat over said body,
said extended sections forming the end andside walls of the container and being connected together by diagonally folding corner pieces, said extended sections having means comprising recesses and registering tongues for retaining the walls of the container in the erected position, said cover being connected to one of said extended sections by an intermediate section, said blank being further folded into a position wherein said cover and folded extended sections lie in a flat position over said body so that when pressure is brought to bear on the ends of the pre-folded blank, said corner sections fold inwardly to raise the end andside walls into a vertical position, said intermediate section being folded to bring the cover in the same plane as the top edges of the side and being arranged to fold on itself into a raised position to operate as an advertising medium and portions cut from said side walls forming inwardly extending flanges operating to retain said cover in its raised foldedposition.
