ln the present embodiment the yoke 3 is illustrated as of the vertical type and .formed with forwardly extending arms 4 and 5 be'- tween which cushioning mechanism, diagrammatically illustrated by dot and dash lines, is embraced. The cushioning mechanism is here shown provided with a front follower member 6 and a rear follower member 7, said rear follower member abutting against the rear portion 8 of the yoke which joins the arms d and 5 thereof.
For transmitting forces from the cushioning mechanism to the draft sills l, rear stl-op members 9 and 10. which may be of ordinary construction, and front stop members l1 and i2, of special construction to be hereinafter described in detail, are provided. 'llhe rear stop members 9 and 10 serve as abutments for the rear follower member 7 and are preferably provided with longitudinally extending faces 13 and 14, between which the yoke Sis centered.
rllhe forward portions-of the arms 4 and 5 of the yoke are provided with registering slots l5 and 16 for the reception of an upright or substantially vertical-key 17, serving to operatively and pivotally connect the coupler and yoke members. The coupler stem 2 is likewise formed with a slot 18 through which the key 17 passes. The slot 18 is preferably of approximately the same size as the key 17 so that a fairly close fit is obtained, 'whereas the slots 15 and 1G in the yoke arms are preferably flared rearwardly, as illustrated, so that the key is permitted to pivot or angle about its forward edge for allowing corresponding pivotal motion between the coupler and yoke.. For limiting such pivotal motion the forward portions of the arms at and 5 of the yoke, which are preferably widened and increased in depth, as illustrated at 19, to compensate for the slots 15 and 1G therein, are connected at their corresponding side edges by means of upright or substantially vertical web portions 20 aud 2l, which portions are preferabl)v formed integrally with the yoke arms and extend in substantially longitudinal planes parallel to cach other. These web portions 20 and 21 as will be obvious, are engaged by the rearward portion of the coupler stem upon angling or pivotal motion between the coupler and yoke and thereby serve to limit said angling motion.
In order to prevent breakage of these webs 20 and 21, or obviate the necessity of making such webs unduly heavy, the stop members 11 and 12 are formed with stop faces 22, 23. 2st and 25, which extend substantially parallel to and closely embrace the web portions 2O and 21 on the yoke. These stop faces,.as most clearly illustrated in Figure 4. are formed as flanged extensions on the rib or reinforcing web portions 26. 27, 28 and 29 of the forward stop members 11 and 12. It will therefore be apparent that the stop faces 22, 24 and 25, which are engaged by and serve to limit the movement of and reinforce the web portions 2O and 21 on the yoke 3, are preferably integrally connected with the base or main attaching web portion 30 of the respective stop member or casting, by the web portions 26, 27, 2S and 29, respectively. The stop faces 22, 23, 211 and 25 do not need to extend the full length of the stop member, and, as shown in Figure 1, the connecting web portions, therefore, are tapered from tbe ends of said stop faces and gradually merge into the main web 30 of the stop member. All of said stop faces, and their connecting webs, are jointed at the rear end of the stop member by the stop face 31. which is engaged directly by the front follower 6.
Although four stop faces for each coupler web are shown on each stop casting, it is obvious that we do not wish to be limited to this number, as one or any convenient number of such faces may be used. The stop faces are here shown as separated for the more convenient removal of the cores, but it is obvious that they may be made continuous or at least partly continuous, if desired. As illustrated,
however, the said stop faces serve to very materially strengthen the resistingr power of the webs 20 and 21 on the yoke when said webs are engaged by the end of the coupler or coupler stem upon pivotal motion thereof.
The yoke member, as illustrated, may be supported by a yoke support or carry iron 32, near the rear end thereof, and a carry iron 33, near the forward end thereof. Said carry iron 33 also serves as a support for the key 17, as will be understood. An upper yoke guide 34 is preferably provided adjacent the rear end of the yoke. These members 32 and 33 may be connected to the center or draft sills by bolts or other desired fastening means 35. The top guide 34, however, is preferably connected to the top cover plate 3G by means of rivets or other connecting means 37, as illustrated most clearly in Figure 5.
The other portions of the draft rigging and cooperating parts of the car underframe may be of any ordinary or desired construction. For example, the end sill 37ZL is shown as of angle form and connected to the top cover plate 36 in any desired manner. A striking casting is shown at 38 and a coupler carry iron at 39 connected to the striking casting by means of bolts or studs 40 which pass through the ears 11 on the carry iron and through the downwardly projecting flange 42 of the striking casting.
Although in the present embodiment of the invention, the yoke is shown as of the vertical type and the coupler is pivotally eonnected thereto by means of an upright key, it is obvious that we do not wish to be restricted to such construction, as a yoke of a different type may be employed and the pivotal connection between it and the coupler may be of a different character. By virtue of our invention, however, we have provided means by which the upright webs on one of said connected members, which serve to limit the pivotal motion between it and the other member, are efficiently reinforced by means of stop castings positioned on either side of the pivotal connection, which stop castings have cooperating faces which bear against said limiting web portions and reinforce the same as well as provide for transmitting draft forces to the sills. i
Having now described our invention, what we claim is:
1. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of a coupler, a yoke pivotally connected thereto and provided with means for limiting said pivotal motion, and means on the draft sills, adjacent said limiting means and presenting flat faces thereto for reinforcing the same.

In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of a coupler, a yoke, an upright key extending through forward portions of the yoke and a rearward portion of the coupler for pivotally connecting said members, one of said members being formed with upright wall portions extending on both sides of the other member for limiting pivotal motion'and stop members on said draft sills provided with flat wall portions adapted to engage the upright wall portions for reinforcing said limiting means.
5. ln a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of a coupler, a yoke provided with forwardly extending arms and a hooded forward portion surrounding the rear portion of the coupler, said hooded portion being formed byintegral wall portions connecting the side edges of the forward ends of the yoke arms, an upright key member pivotally connecting said coupler and yoke, said coupler being engaged by the wall portions of the yoke upon pivotal motion therebetween, and stop castings on the draft sills provided with walls extending substantially parallel to and adapted to contact with said yoke wall portions, upon pivotal motion, and reinforce the same.
6. ln a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of a coupler, a yoke, cushioning mechanism within the saine, stop members connected to said sills for transmitting thereto, through the cushioning mechanism, the forces delivered to said coupler, a substantially vertically-arranged key operatively connecting said yoke and coupler and allowing pivotal motion therebetween, said yoke being provided with wall portions on either side of the coupler for limiting pivotal motion of the coupler with respect thereto, and wall portions Aon said stop members adjacent the wall portions on the yoke, for engaging and reinforcing the same.

In a draft rigging, in combination with draft sills, a coupler, a yoke pivotally connected thereto and formed with integral Walls on either side of said coupler for limiting pivotal motion therebetween, and a sto member on either side of said walls connecte to the respective draft sill by means of a web thereof and formed with a Wall normally parallelV to the integral walls on the dyoke, closely spaced with respect thereto an correspondingly spaced from the web connecting said stop to the draft sill for reinforcing the walls of the yoke upon engagement of said walls therewith.

In a draft rigging, in combination with draft sills, a coupler, a yoke, an upright key extending through forward portions of the yoke and a rearward portion of the coupler for connecting said members While permitting horizontal angling therebteween, one of said members being formed with walls eX- tending on both sides of the other member for limiting relative angling, and a sto member connected to the sills on either si e of said walls, formed with a wall disposed substantially at right angles to said sills for engagement with associated cushioning mechanism and a plurality of longitudinally disposed Wall portions closely positioned with respect to the walls for limiting pivotal motion between coupler and yoke and directed substantially parallel to said draft sills.
