This invention relates to a resilient or yieldable foot rest.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a foot rest which may be used advantageously in vehicles, particularly automobiles, to theease and comfort of pas sengers while riding. In accordance with this object there is provided a foot rest adapted to be mounted to be swung into and out of a serviceable position, together with means adapted to be engaged by the foot rest to yieldingly support the same in the serviceable position, and which is also adapted to allow the foot rest to be swung into and out of the serviceable position, and also to enable the use of the foot rest in the ordinary man- The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features-and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the-accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section showing a foot rest yieldingly supported in a serviceable position.

Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the foot rest supporting devices.

Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the device shown in Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44, of Fig. 3.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be apparent that there is shown a foot rest which consists of a transverse rail 10 and side members 11 connected to the opposite ends of said rail. The side members 11 are each provided with means 12 for attaching the foot rest so as to be swung into and out of a serviceable position.

In order to resiliently or yieldingly support the foot rest in the serviceable position and to allow the foot rest to be swung into and out of such position, and also to enable the use of the foot rest in the ordinary manner there is provided means or devices pres- 1920. Serial No. 865,507.

ently to be described; A pair of similar devices are provided to cooperate with the side members 11 for the purposes stated. In the drawings only one of the devices is shown since it sufiices to give a full understanding of the invention. The device includes a suitable guide 13 having provision on the lower end thereof for attaching it, such as a base 14 adapted to accommodate fasteners or screws 15. The guide 13 shown is of tubiform and has a slot 16 in one side. A slide or block 17 is arranged for up and down movement in the guide 13. The slide or block 17 is under the influence of meanshaving a normal tendency to constantly urge the slide or block upward- 1y. The said means consists of a spring18 having the lower end thereof attached as at 19 to the slide'or block 17, and the upper end thereof being attached, as at 20 to the upper end ofv the guide 13. A rest member 21 is hingedly' connected with theslide or block 17 as at 22, in such a manner that it may be disposed in a rigid horizontal position as shown in F ig 3 in full lines, or to be swung to a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines. The guide 13 will be arranged with respect to the related side member 11 of the foot rest, so that the side member will clear the rest member 21 when the latter is in the vertical ition, to enable the foot rest to be swung into and-out of the serviceable position. A cover member 23 is secured in position on the guide 13 to enclose the spring 18 thereby giving a neat appearance to the device.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that two devices of the kind described in associationwith the foot rest are well adapted to yieldingly support it in a serviceable position. This is accomplished by bringing each rest member to the horizontal position to be engaged by the related side member 11 of the foot'rest. Consequently the'foot rest will be yieldingly supported under the influence of each spring 18. The foot rest thus supported aflords ease and comfort to the users.

Each rest member 21 may be swung to the vertical position which enables the foot rest to be used in the ordinary manner.

It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, as details of construction may be modified and rearranged without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. The combination with a foot rest mounted for up and down swinging movement on a suitable support, of relatively fixed guides on said support, a block having up and down sliding movement in each guide, a rest member hingedly connected with theblock, and

tension means acting on said block and'having a normal tendency-to constantlyurge it upwardly, the rest member being swingable on its hinge to a position to be engaged by the foot rest, said block limiting the movement of its rest member to the position in which it may be engaged by said foot rest whereby the tension means will be under tension to counteract downward pressure exerted on said foot rest, and said rest member also being swingable and its hinge to a position to allow the foot rest to be swung into and out of engagement with the rest member.

2. The combination of a foot rest, means mounting the foot rest at one end for up and down swinging movement in relation to a suitable fixed support, fixed guides on said support, blocks having guided up and down movement in said guides respectively, rest members connected with sa1d blocks respecdown than the horizontal position with respect to said block, and a spring connected with the guide and block to urge the block upwardly, and said rest member being movable out of its horizontal position to allow said first means to clear it, in order that said first means may be moved below said rest member.

tively for movement from horizontal positions to vertical positions, means preventing the downward movement of the rest members from their horizontal positions with respect to said blocks, and tension means connected with said guides and blocks and having a tendency to constantly urge said blocks upwardly, said foot rest being engageable with said rest members while the latter are in their horizontal positions, to yieldingly support the foot rest, and said rest members being swingable on their connections with said V blocks into their vertical positions, to allow the foot rest to'clear said rest members, in order that the foot rest may repose on said support.

3. A resilient foot rest comprising a transverse foot bar, means mounting said bar for up and down movement on a suitable fixed support, and means adapted to cooperate with said first means to yieldingly sustain said bar, said last means consisting of a guide fixed to said support, a block having guided up and down movement in said guide, a rest hinged to said block for movement into and out of a substantially horizontal position with respect to said block, means to prevent the movement of the rest member further
