CURTAIN PROTECTOR Filed Sept. 29, 1931 M' ZZ.
HER ATTORNEYS Carrz'e Vd/Z W29.
WITNESS:
I Patented Jan. 5, 1932 i' i TUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARRIE VAN WIE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CURTAIN rnorno'ron Application filed September 29, 1931. Serial No. 565,836.
This invention relates to certain novel imimproved curtain protector now to be deprovements in curtain protectors, and has for scribed. its principal object the provision of an irn- The present invention includes a pair of proved construction of this character which similar clamping arms 16 and 17 in each of will be highly efficient in use and economical which is provided a channel slot 18 and these in manufacture. slots slidably receive the bars 19 and 20 that I It is an object of this invention to provide are extensible into and out of the arms 16 an improved device for protecting curtains, and 17. shades, drapes and the like against being The arms 16 and 17 are hinged together at soiled and damaged by the lower end portion one end bv a hinge 21, Fig. 4, which includes of the curtain, or: like article, being blown a pair of brackets 22 that receive the ends of or lapped through the window when the sash the arms and are secured thereto by suitable is raised. f I p connecting elements 23. The hinge 21 in Another object of the invention is to procludes a pintle 24 that includes a hooked porvide an improved extensible curtain protector tion 25 for atachment to an eyelet 26 fastwhich maybe accommodated to sashes of variened in one of the stiles 13. ous'widths. I The end portion 27 of bar 20 carries a y A further object resides in the provision of hinge 28 that is similar to the hinge 21 and unique means by which to readily attach the this hinge 28 includes a pair of brackets 29 protector to, and to detach it from, the sash. and 30 that are similar to the brackets 22. 70
Other objects will appear hereinafter. However, bracket 29 is permanently secured The invention consists in the novel comto the portion 27 while bracket 30 is in the bination and arrangement of parts to be herenature of a clamp hinged to bracket 29 and inafter described and claimed. provided with an aperture 31 that is adapted The invention will be best understood by to receive a headed element 32 fastened in the reference to the accompanying drawings end portion 33 of bar 19. The pintle of hinge showing the preferred form of construction, 28 includes a hooked portion 34 adapted to andin-which: be engaged in an eyelet 35 carried by the Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevational other rail 13. view of a conventional window showing the In use, the hooked portions 25 and 34; will invention in working position; be fastened to the eyelets 26 and 35 so that Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inventhe device will be mounted on the sash for tion; movement therewith. The lower end por- 3 is a sectional view on line 33 in tion of the curtain will then be inserted be- Fig. 1; and I tween the arms 16 and 17, the bars 19 and Fig. i is a perspective view of a part of the 20 being extended to fit the width distance invention. between the hooked portions 25 and 34 to In the drawings, which illustrate a prethe distance between the eyelets 26 and 35. ferred and practical embodiment of the inven- The bracket'portion 30 is then swung over tion. 10 indicates generally a window frame the end of bar portion 33 with the head of whieh includes a sill 11, while 12 indicates element 32 received in aperture 31 whereby generally a lower sash slidable in the frame, the arms 16 and 17 will clamp the lower end and which includes the stiles 13 and bottom portion of the curtain therebetween so that rail 14. 15 includes a curtain which is susthe same will be prevented from flapping I pended by suitable means, not shown. As is through the open window. Since the lower well known, when the sash 12is raised so that end portion of the curtain will thus move the rail 14 is above the sill 11 the lower end with the sash the latter may be raised and 7 portion of the curtain will frequently flap lowered and will carry the lower end por W in and out of the space between the sill and tion of the curtain therewith so that the sash v m the. rail 14. To prevent this I provide my may be raised to any desired extent and yet the curtain be prevented from flapping through the opened window. The device- While I have illustrated and described a preferred use of the invention as a protective device for the lowerend of a curtain it may be used forhanging curtains, drapes or shades, Thus by placing the, upper end portion of the curtain between arms 16 and 17 and closing the clasp a curtain or the like may be suspended while being readily removable when it is necessary to clean or dust the curtain. Moreover, the eyelets or like means. may be placed'inthe window casement,; i n this use'of the invention, so that the device will be stationarily mounted.
WhileI have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying myinvention into effect, this is capable of varaiation and modification without departing from the spirit of the. invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
' desire toavail myself of such'variations and modifications as: come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: f f
1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of clamping members adapted to receive therebetween the lower end portion of a curtain or the like,'means to clamp said members together and said cur tain portion therebetween, and means to mount said'memberson a window sash.
.2. A protective device of the character described comprising a pair of extensible clamping members adapted to receive therebetween the lower end portion of-a curtain or the like, means to clamp the members together and the curtain portion therebetween, and means to mount said members on a window sash so that the curtain portion will move with the sash, said members being extensible to accommodate them to the width of the sash clamping structure to detachably connect the other ends of said members together to clamp said curtain portion therebetween, and means to mount said members on a Window sash for movement therewith. 1 4. A protective device for curtains and the like comprising a pair of extensible clamping members, means hingedly connecting said members together at one end, whereby when said members are spread apart the lower end portion of a curtain may be inserted therebetween, a clamping structure to detachably connect the other ends of said members together to clamp said curtain portiontherebetween, and means to mount said members on a window sash for movement therewith, saidmembers being extensible to accommodate them to the width of the sash.
5-. A device of the character describedcomprising a pair of clamping members each including extensible elements, means hingedly connecting said members together at one end, whereby when'said members'are spread apart a portion of a curtain or the like may be inserted therebetween, a clamping structure to detachably connect the other ends of said members to clamp said portion therebetween, said elements being extensible to fit the same to the width of said curtain or the like.
7 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CARRIE VAN WIE.
