This invention relates to anchors of the type in which the stock is longitudinally movable through an aperture in the shank so that when the anchor is not in use the stock may be folded against the shank.

An object of this invention is a folding anchor having eflicient means for maintaining the stock in operative position and effectually preventing it from moving into inoperative position when the anchor is in use.

In an anchor embodying the invention, the shank is provided with a transverse aperture having a key-way extending longitudinally thereof and the stock is provided with a collar and key in spaced relation, the stock being movable both longitudinally and rotatably in the aperture to bring the stock into operative or inoperative position. One end of the stock is perpendicular to the remainder 939 thereof and is angularly offset with respect to the key, whereby in position of use of the anchor the key is maintained out of alinement with the key-way, thereby maintaining the stock in operative position and effectually prevent it from moving into inoperative position. Preferably, the collar is provided with a recessed portion which, when the stock is in folded position, receives the shank, thereby making a compact arrangement of stock 39 and shank.

Other objects, novel features and advan tages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein:

The invention is illustrated as being embodied in a folding anchor of which the general form and construction is familiar. The anchor comprises the usual shank 10 and arms 11, the shank having a transverse aperture'12 near its upper end to receive the stock 13. This stock is both longitudinally and rotatably movable in the aperture 12 and has the usual perpendicular end 14 to permit it to swing into folded position parallel to their; shank; The aperture 12 is provided with a T-shaped key-Way extending longitudinally of the shank. The stock 13 is provided with a T-shaped key 16, which is adapted to pass 4 through the key-way 15. A collar 17 is provided on the stock 13 in spaced relation to the key 16, so that after the key is passed through the key-way and the stock has been turned to move the key out of register with the key-way, the key and collar serve to pre-"fili vent longitudinal movement of the stock in either direction.

The key 16 is angularly offset with respect to the perpendicular end 14: of the stock, the extent of the offset being approximately 90. Thus, when the anchor lies on the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, the stock 13 is maintained in such position by engagement of the end 14 that the bottom with the key 16 is held out of [I register with the key-way 15, thus preventing movement of the stock into inoperative position. This relation is maintained even though the anchor be dragged along the bottom. The position of the stock comprising the key 16 and end 14 is heavier than the remaining portion so that the end 14; engages the bottom rather than the other end.

The collar 17 is provided with a recess 18 which, when the stock is folded against the anchor receives the shank 10 and permits contact arrangement of the stock and shank. This arrangement is desirable in that with small boats there is a minimum of storage space.

It is of course understood that various modifications may be made in the structure above described, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A folding anchor having in combination, a shank provided with a transverse aperture having a T-shaped key-way, a stock movabie both longitudinally and rotatably in said aperture, a T-shaped key integral with said stock and a collar on said stock in spaced relation to said key, one end of said stock being perpendicular to the main portion thereof and being angularly offset with respect to said key, whereby in position of use of the anchor, said key is maintained out of alinement with said key-way.

2. A folding anchor having in combination a shank provided with a transverse aperture having a T-shaped key-way extending longitudinally of said shank a stock movable both longitudinally and rotatably in said aperture a T-shaped key integral with said stock, and a collar on said stock in spaced relation to said key, one end of said stock being perpendicular to the main portion thereof and angularly offset from said key approximately whereby in the position of use of the anchor said key is maintained out of alinement with said key-way.
