MERCHANDIS E CARTON Filed Oct. 16. 1930 Y wwwHmmmum Patented Aug. 9, 1932 j UNITED STATES PAT-ENT OFFICE oTTo G. SCHMITT, or OMAHA, NEBRASKA, AAssIcfNo/iat 'rosoHMI'rr-MURPHY LA-BoRA.- Tomas, INC., or OMAHA, NEBRASKA, A conPoRAmroNor NEBRASKA MERCHANDISE CARTON Application filed October 16, 1930. Serial No. 489,014.
This invention relates to improvements in packages, and refers specifically tothe provision of an envelope having an open face within which merchandise may be confined and displayed through the open face of the envelope, being maintained centrally of symmetrically disposed with respect tothe opening in the face of the envelope.
The utility, objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing and following detail description.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a development of the rear face of the sheet from which the envelope is constructed.
Fig.,2 is a front face of the envelope in assembled position.
Fig. 3 is a rear face of the envelope shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. s.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. i
Referring in detail to the drawing, l in- 25 dicates a sheet of material from which the envelope may be constructed and may be formed of relatively light carboard, comparatively heavy paper, or such like ma-t terial. The sheet 1 may be stamped or otherwise cut in the configuration shown in Fig. 1,
and may comprisea face sheet 2 provided with an opening 3 over which a sheet of transparent material 4, such as celloohaneor the like may be disposed, said sheet being adhesively united to the inner side of the face 2.
The sheet 1 may be so cut as to forma flap 5 at one end of the face sheet 2 which may be adapted to be folded along line 6. An upper ap 7, having an outwardly extending tongue 8, may be formed along one longitudinal side of the face sheet 2 and may be folded along line 9. A lower flap 10, having a slit 11, may be formed upon the opposite longitudinal side of the face sheet 2 and may be folded along line 12. The remaining end of the sheet may comprise a relatively elongated flap 13 which may be adapted to be folded along line'14. Y 'A By folding fiaps 5, 7 ,K- 10 vand 13 along the vlines indicated, an envelope will be provided which will have an open face and will be. maintained in folded position by the interengagement of the tongue 8 with the slit 11. v
In the provision of a package or envelope having an open face through which the merchandise confined therein may be visible, it is desirable, from. the standpont of neatness or,
attractiveness, that such merchandise be maintained in a central or symmetrical position with respect to the transparent opening. Inasmuch'as purchasers subconsciously associate neatness and attractiveness with goods of high quality, the provision of means for so maintaining merchandise within a package of this character is extremely desirable.
As a feature of my invention, a piece of merchandise; designated generally as 15 may comprise, for example, anplurality of corn, bunion or callous pads 16 adhesivelyl united to -a substantially fiat base of crinoline or gauze 1'7, which may be adapted to be main# tained within theenvelope formed by suitably folding the sheet 1. It is to be understood, of course, that I do not wish to be limitedto the confining of such merchandise as corn pads or the like, inasmuch as my invention broadly contemplates the disposition and maintenance of any type of merchandise in a symmetrical orcentral position before an opening in one or more walls of a package.-
To maintain the merchandise 15 in a central position with respect to the opening 3, I may dispose the crinoline base 17 in a plane parallel and adjacent to the elongated flap 13 and may so position the base 17 upon said flap that the pads 16 upon said base will bel visible through the opening 3 and said pads will occupy a symmetrical position with respect to said opening when the Hap 13 is sheet 2. Toprevent displacement of the base 17 from this desired position, I may positively fasten said base to said flap by means, for instance, of a staple 18, or the like. In
this manner, the'crinoline base 17 will be A9ofolded adjacent vto the inner side ofthe face It is to be understood, of course, that the retaining means 18 instead of taking the form of a staple may take any form suitable for the type of merchandise to bedisplayed.
I claim as my invention:
An envelope package adapted to contain a plurality of relatively small articles of merehandise mounted on a relatively Hat support disposedlwithin the package, the package being adapted'to be opened andclosed several times for the removal of individual articles of' merchandise from said fiat support While leaving the remaining articles of merchandise still mounted on said flat support, Which comprises in combination a plurality of relatively flat component parts foldably connected to each other to form an envelope,
said component parts consisting of a main i body portion rectangular in form to provide a front face, said front face being provided with an aperture and a transparent sheet disposed over` said aperture, flaps foldably c011- nected with at least three edges of said rectangular front face, tvvo opposite flaps being provided With a tongue and slit for engagement when folded, a third flap associated with the third edge of said rectangular front face visible through said aperture ywhen said envelope is folded whereby said relatively small articles of merchandise, each of Which is of lesser dimensions than the dimensions of said aperture, and said flat support, are disposed intermediate said third Hap and the aperture whereby saidsupport is substantially centrally positioned with respect to the aperture and the third flap is interposed between the articles andsaid opposite flaps.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
OTTO G. SCHMITT.
