This invention relates to display stands 7 and includes subject matter disclosed in my Patent No. 1,850,079 issued March 22, 1932, on an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed June 16, 1930, Serial No.
'It has for its general object the provision of a new and improved display stand particularly adapted for use in grocery stores to attractively display and to render easily accessible tothe customer the merchandise to be sold.
The invention has for one of its specific objects the provision of a display stand embodying new and improved adjustable shelves to display goods in containers of different dimensions.
- Another specific object ofthe invention is to provide a display j'stand embodying new and improved shelves including separable elements which may be cheaply manufactured and, quickly and easily assembled and taken apart by an unskilled person. I
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
The preferred embodiments of the invention are. illustrated by the accompanying drawings, of which Fig.1 is a sectional and elevation of the stand, with most of the shelves removed; Fig. 2, a detail side view illustrating the shelf brackets shown by Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a fragmentary end elevation of another embodiment ofthe display stand; Fig.4, a detail view taken on the line H of- Fig. 3; Fig; 5, a detail view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a sectional'end elevation of another embodiment of the bracket and associated parts; Fig. 7, a view on'the line 7"7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8, a detail view of the shelf shown by Fig. 6; Fig. 9,21. detail view of the bracket shown by Fig. 6; Fig. 10, a sectional end elevationof another embodiment of the bracket and associated parts takenon the line'1U-10 of Fig. 11'; Fig. 11, a section on the line 1111 of Fig. 10; Fig. '12, a sectional end elevation of another embodiment of the bracket and associated parts; and Figs.'13 and 14, detail top plan and sectional side elevation vlews, respectively, of a modification of the shelf bracket shown by Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs l and 2, the stand includes avertical post; comprising telescopic sections 1, 2 3 and 4. The lowerportion of this stand comprisesnopart of the present invention. The upper portion of thefpost hasa plurality of vertically spaced pinf holes in which are disposed pins 5, 6, 7 8, 9, and 10.
The shelf brackets are indicated at 11, each of which comprises an upright or longitudinal bar 12 torest against thev post and a transverse bar comprising a pair of arms 13 to embrace the post, said arms having hooks 14 to engage one ofthe pins.
Mounted on the arms; 13 .arethe lugs 15 which extend upwardly and inwardly toward the post to removably fit in sockets 16in the shelf .17 It will be obvious that when the shelf-17 isplaced upon the transverse bar 13 so that the lugs 15 enter the sockets 16, and the hooks'14 are made to engage one of the pins ,on theupost, the bracket willbe held on the post and the. shelf .on the bracket.
Referring to, Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the post is the same asthatfshownby Figs. 1 and 2. The shelf 18 is made in two. sections which are removably secured to. the post section 1 by 'bol'ts'l9 and plates'20, 21 and 22, as
shown in detail by. Fig. 5. r The shelf 23 is removably. securedjto. the post section .3 by bolts 24, plate 251 and spacers 26,-the spacers 26 being of such a width that the shelf 23 is slidable vertically on the post. The mounting ofthe shelf'24 issimilar to that of the-shelf 23. 7
Theoshelves 18, 23 and 2st rest upon the pins 25, 27411 and 27, respectively, and vertir cally spaced holes are bored through the post N se'ctions, as shown, so that the shelves may 9 beheld at various elevations to display goods in containers of different dimensions. The bracket 11 of Fig. 3 is the same'as the brackets 11 of Fig. 1. r V
' Referring now toFigs. 6, 7, 8 and -9, the post is indicated at 28 and has vertically spaced openings in one ofwhich is the pin 29. The shelf is indicated at, 30, and has a tongue. 31 the end' portions of which are,
undercut, as shown. The bracket includes a transverse bar comprising parallel arms 32 held in spaced relation by bolt 33 and the undercut plug 34 to form a socket for the reception of the tongue 31 of the shelf 30. The arms 32 have hooks 35 to engage the pin 29. The lon itudinal or upright bar of the bracket is in icated at 36, and has a hook 37 to engage the undercut portion 38 of the tongue 30. The longitudinal bar 36 is connected to the transverse bar 32 by the link 39 which is pivotally connected to each of the j bars.
As shown by Fig. 7, the longitudinal bar 36 has offset lugs 41 to engage the arms 32 to prevent relative movement of the parts.
It will be apparent that when the tongue 1310f the shelf'30 is inserted in the socket of thebracket formed by the parallel transverse arms 32 so that the undercut portion of said tongue bears against the spacer 34; and the longitudinalbar 39 is swung upwardly into engagement with the portion 38 'of saidtong ue; and the hooks 35 are made to engage the pin 29 of the post 28the shelf 30 is releasably locked on the bracket and the bracket is releasably locked on the'pos t.
Figs. 10 and 11 illustrate the union of two ends of shelf sections 42 and 43, and the connection to the post 44 by one bracket. The shelf sections 42 and 43 have thereon tongues 45 and 46 similar in form'to the tongue 31 of Figs. 6 to 9. The bracket has a transverse bar comprising a pair of parallel arms 47 held in spaced relation by the bolt 48 and the spacer 49. The arms 47 haveinwardly extending flanges 50 which are connected by bolts or other suitable means, not shown, to the L-shapedsupport 51. Slidable between the arms 47 and having a reduced portion 52 slidable between the flanges 50 is a U-shaped locking member 53. A plate 54 is mounted on the flanges 50 to guide the portion 52 of the lockingmember,and to connect the lockingtmemberand the arms 47 of the transverse bar. 1 I Y It will be obvious that when the tongues 45 and 46 of the shelfsections-42 and 43 are placed'in the socket formed by the arms 47, and the locking member 53 is placed in the position shown by Fig. 10, the shelves will be connected together and to the bracket; and when the hooks 55 of the arms 47 are made to engage the pin 56 of the post 44, the bracket will be releasably locked on the post and the locking member 53 will be held in' its active position.
' Fig.- 12 illustrates an embodiment that may be used in place of the bracket 18 of Fig. 3. It includes shelfsections 57 and 5 8. The shelf 58 is held in place by a bracket identical with that shown by Figs. 10 and 11. The shelf 57 is held in place bya bracket having a pair of spaced arms 59 (only one of'which is shown), resting upon the pin 60 on post 61 .and having a position 62 to receive the bolt 48. As shown by Fig. 11, the bolt 48 extends laterally away from the arms 47 of the other bracket. The arms 59 may be provided with hooks 63 to engage the pin 60.
In Figs. 13 and 14, the bracket is modified to the meeting ends of adjacent shelves. One of the shelves is shown at 70. The spaced arms of the bracket are numbered 71, each having a hook 72 to engage the pin 73. Carried by the arms is a lug 74 having extensions 74a to fit in the ends of the shelves 70. The post embraced by the arms 71 is shown at 7 5.-
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the shelves may quickly and. easily be adjusted to occupy various positions with respect to each other to support groceries in containers of different sizes, that one shelf or more may be removed or placed a in a different position without disturbing the remainder of the shelves; and that the various assemblies can be' effected without the use of tools and by unskilled persons.

A display stand having a post; a shelf comprising a pair of sections, the meeting ends of said sections. having tongues thereon; and a shelf'lbracket. having means to engage said post and a socket for the reception of said tongues, and a releasable locking member movable into engagement with said tongues to hold said tongues in said socket, said member being held in its active position by said post when said hook 5 is in engagement with said pin.
