heretofore employed, and when collapsed, may
be positioned in a space approximately one twenty-second of the space originally occupied when extended, so that the collapsed grillage may be compactly positioned immediately adjacent the side of the opening in a relatively unobtrusive, obscure manner. I
The chief feature of, the invention consists in the construction of a grillage of the aforesaid character, whereby the aforesaid object is accomplished.
Other objects and features will be set forth more specifically hereinafter.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from'the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims:--

A center bar 15 is similarly apertured as at 16 and the center bar is movable toward the side bar in the collapsing of the grillage. The grillage includes a plurality of rectangularly arranged links 1'? having the eyes 18, the eyes of adjacent links being connected together by the ring 19.
There is thus formed a type of grillage of links andrings which has all of the strength of a. lazy tongs guard but which is flexible and which may be collapsed into substantially the same overall length as the grillage occupies when extended, thereby differentiating from the lazy tongs arrangement which upon collapse elongates.
A pair of tubes herein shown square and indicated by the numerals 20 and 2l- -see Fig.6-is
interlockingly associated as at the parting 22 and by a plunger 23 which is slidably supported in one tube and in the projected position. is telescopically receivable by the open end of the adj acent tube. A longitudinal slot-24 in the end of the plunger supporting tubereceives a pin 25, which is secured to the plunger 23 so that the plunger may be readily moved from the retracted and dotted line positionsee Fig. 6to the projected-and interlocking position, as shown by the full lines therein. When thus associated together, the tubes 21 and 22 form a complete support across the opening defined'by thewalls lo and 1.1 and the side walls 12. 7
An anchorage 26 is slidably supported on said tube construction and is connected to the adja-. cent ring 19. The other endof the tube 21 is pivotally connected as at 2 7 to an associated part 28, which in the present form is shown rigidly I mounted.
The lower support and retaining member construction is of a character similar to that shown in Fig. 6, but in this instance, ioldsupwardly and as shown clearly by comparison between the upper and lower portions of Fig. l, the lower member 28 is shorter than the upper member 28 and the lower tube 21 is longer than the upper tube 21, so that when the tubes 21 are released from interlocking engagement with the adjacent tubes 20 in alignment therewith, the lower tube 21 may be folded upwardly and the uppertube 21 may be folded downwardly, the later retaining the upwardly folded tube in the collapsed position, see
When the grillage is to be collapsed, the lock is i opened, removed from the eyeleted brackets, the two hooks are elevated from the locking pins or catches and the two cener bars are slid along the supporting and retaining members and 21 toward their respective side 13. In this sliding movement, each of tl'ieanchorages 26 is progressively picked up and caused to move toward the portions 28 and the side bar 13. all of the anchorages 26 have been mounted upon the portions 28 and the center bar 15 is similarly positioned upon the supports 28, the lower tubes 20 and 21 are folded upwardly and the upper tubes 20 and 21 are folded downwardly, thereby retaining the entire construction through the Weight or upper tubes 20 and 21 in the collapsed position.
In Fig. 9 there is illustrated a modified form of the invention. In this form of the invention, there is provided a window opening 110 in the wall 111 that joins a side wall 112. A pair of L- shaped support members 121 having the angular end 128 rigid therewith ispermanently mounted at each end as at loll. Blidably mounted upon the upper and lower L-shaped support and retaining members, only the upper member being illustrated herein, is the grillage and the same includes the usual anchorages 126. The purpose of the angularly extending portion 128 is to permit the grillage to be collapsed and positioned at one side of the window opening and to be positioned in the corner so that it will not be in the way. 9
In Figs. 7 and 8, there is illustrated a modified form of the invention, wherein 210 indicates a door frame and mounted upon the side portion 212 there is a hinged construction 230 which supports an inverted L-shaped member or a U- shaped member having the vertical portion 213 and the angular extensions 228. The grillage is suitably secured at one side toportion 213 and the anchorages 226 are'slidably supported by the portion 228 and a cable 221 is suitablysecured at one end to the free end of the angular portion 228. Adjacent the other end of the cable is mounted a vertical bar 215, which is slidably mounted upon the cable and through the upper end of said bar projects the headed anchor member 232 carried by the end of the cable and which is receivable by a slot 230 formed in the bracket The vertical member 215 carries the hasp 233 and associated therewith is a staple 234 and a lock-235 for locking the grillage in the extended and guarding position. When the opening is not to be guarded, the hasp is removed from the When r staple, the linkage is collapsed until the bar 215 has been moved so it is supported by the angular portion 228, and then the catch and latch arrangement at the upper right hand corner is disassociated. Thereafter, the entire construction may be swung upon the hinge arrangement 200, as shown in Fig. 8 and positioned to one side of the opening.
If another cable 221 is not to be employed at the bottom of the construction, the modification shown in Figs. 10 and 11 may be employed. In this formation, the threshold 311 includes an elongated slot 320 which is enlarged as at 321 and the rings319 are connected to a double link arrangement 326 which constitutes the anchorage, one link being positioned transversely of and laterally movable in the opening 321 and theother link being longitudinally positioned therein as shown.
In this form of the invention, the member 215 would terminate in an inverted T-shaped head, the head portion being receivable by the portion 321 of the slot and the neck being receivable by the restricted or mouth portion 320 of the slot. The door 300 isshown positioned offset with respect to the threshold and the grillage, so that the grillage may be positioned adjacent the door and not prevent closing of the door. In Fig. 11 there is illustrated a lateral enlargement 301 in the mouth 320 through which the transversely movable links are inserted and the head portion of the member 215 may be inserted if the same be employed.
The invention claimed is:-
1. A collapsible grillage guard for openings such aswindows and doors, including a pair of I substantially parallel support and retaining members positioned in juxtaposition to opposite sides of the opening to be guarded, a plurality of substantially parallel anchorages slidably asse ciated with said members and approximately transverse thereto, a plurality oi rings adapted to lie in a single plane including the anchorages and the support members, and a plurality of l -ks also in said plane, each having eyes at opposite ends, one eye being loosely connected to a ring or an-- 121) chorage and extending diagonally and the other eye of said link being loosely connected to another ring for forming a collapsible rectangularly ar ranged link grillage whereby the grillage may be collapsed into a small compass and when col lapsed does not extend longitudinally beyond the spacin between the parallel supports and lies between the anchorages and does not project laterally from said plane. i
2. A device as defined by claim 1, characterized 139 by each support being formed of a separate short portion at one end and'the remaining portion of eachsupport being movable out of the way, said anchorages being operatively associated with said y short portions, one of said anchorages being rigid therewith and the other in the collapsing of the grillage 4 being slidable thereon, the remaining portions of said supports being collapsible towards each other for retaining the grillage and slidable supported anchorage in collapsed relation.
