FOLDING BED AND COT MATTRESS Filed Feb. 19, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor A llorne y Patented Sept. 19, 1933 UNrrED )STATES PATENT oFFicE 1 Claim.v
This invention relates to improvements inA mattresses, and has particular' reference to mattresses for use in connection with folding cots and beds.
One of the features of the invention resides in a mattress which is supported by springs which connect with the sides of the cot frame, and with eyelets provided in the under side of the mattress inwardly of the edges thereof to permit of themattress overlying the rails of the bed frame and the spring to conceal the same and afford the maximum size mattress for a given size bed.
Another feature of the invention is to provide a mattress which is built up from a sheet of canvas which forms the under side thereof, the same having reinforced portions to which eyelets or grommets are connected for the attachment of one end of the supporting frame, the reinforced portion being so formed as to overliethe inside of the eyelets to close the same and prevent the stuffing or filling of the mattress from accidentally working therethrough.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a folding mattress for use in connection with folding beds or cots which is simple and inexpensive of construction, easy to fold, and strong and durable for the purpose intended.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction,
combination, and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichz Figure 1 isa .perspective view of my improved mattress looking at the under side thereof, and
showing the same in an extended position.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the mattress in position upon a cot frame.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail bottom plan View.
Figure 4 is a Vertical longitudinal sectional View through the mattress per se with the sections in folded position.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional View of the mattress in position upon a cot frame.
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional View on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional View on the line '7--7 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a detail perspective View of the strip forming the bottom of the mattress, and showing the manner in which the two mattress sections are connected together.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 1() designates my improved folding mattress in its entirety, which includes broadly a pair of mattress or cushion sections 11-11 of identical construction which are ccn- 60. nected by a fiexible connecting strip l2 extending transversely thereof to enable the folding of the sections one upon the other as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
Each of the mattress or cushion sections 11 65 being of identical construction, a description of one will suffice for the other. Each mattress section 11 comprises a iiexible canvas bottom strip 13 of rectangular configuration in plan, and from which side walls 14 rise, and which walls ex- 70 tend from the extreme edges of the bottom strip 13. A topstrip 15 connects the side walls and coacts therewith and with the bottom strip 13 to provide an envelope or enclosure for the filling or stuffing 16. The top and bottom walls of the y' mattress sections `are connected by the usual tie strings or stays 17.
Secured to the inside of the base strips 13 inwardly'of three of the outer edges thereof are reinforcing canvas strips 18 which are formed by first stitching one of the edges of the strip to the base strip to provide a double thickness of material. Spaced eyelets or grommets 19 pass through this one layer of reinforcing material and through the base strip 13, after which the reinforcing strips are folded over the insides of the grommets and stitched as at 20. This lapping of the reinforcing strip serves to close the grommets from the inside of the mattress to prevent the filling or stuffing 16 from working therethrough.
The grommets 19 are equidistantly spaced for a purpose to be presently explained.
The flexible connecting strip 12 which joins the two mattress sections 11-11 consists of a canvas strip stitched to the bottom strips 13 of the mattress section transversely thereof as at 21, while certain of the grommets or eyelets 19 pass through the connecting strips and the thickness of the base strips 13 and which grommets are in alinement with the other grommets arranged inwardly of the longitudinal sides of the mattress. These grommets in addition to providing eyelets also serve to secure the connecting strips 12 to the two mattress sections.
In certain gures of the drawings, I have illustrated my improved mattress in use wherein it is shown in connection with a cot or bed frame A of rectangular configuration and which is of a size equal to or slightly lessy than the mattress when the sections 1l are in an extended position. The side and end rails of the said frame A are provided with spaced openings B to which the hook ends C of coil springs D are connected. The opposite ends of the coil spring D is provided with a hook E, the bill of Whichextends in a direction opposite to the bill of the hook portion C. The hook portions E of the springs D are engaged with the eyelets or grommets 19 but in order to engage the same it is necessary to slightly expand the coil springs D in order that the spring is placed under tension to prevent the hooked ends E of the spring from dropping out of the grommets 19.
It will be seen that When the mattress is in an applied position upon the cot frame, the same overlies the bed frame A and conceals the frame and the springs D. The reinforcing strips 18 overlie the inside of the grommets or eyelets and provide pockets for the accommodation of the hook portions E of the spring.
When the mattress is suspended upon the bed.
frame A in the manner shown and described, it provides a soft and comfortable bed or lounge,
l and in cases Where it is used with a folding cot or bed, the sections 11--11 may be folded inwardly one upon the other so as to assume the position shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. By
reason of the canvas connecting strip 12, a space is provided when the mattress sections are folded to enable the parts of the folding cot or bed to be interposed therebetween.
In addition to concealing the cot frame and suspending spring, a mattress constructed in accordance with this invention provides Vone of a maximum size for a given size cot or bed frame.
While I have shown and described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, I Wish it to be understood that various changes as come Within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- A mattress comprising a cushion body having a flexible bottom strip, and side walls rising upwardly from the side edges of said bottom strip, a folded flexible reinforcing strip secured to the inside of said bottom strip and disposed inwardly of and parallel to the side edges thereof, and spaced eyelets passing through said lexible bottom strip and the bottom fold of said reinforcing strip, the upper fold of said reinforcing strip serving to keep the lling from exuding from they mattress.
