The present invention relates to power apparatus, and more particularly it pertains to auxiliary power devices.
It is one of the objects of the invention to I 5 provide an auxiliary power device which may be used" in connection with the steam take off of a steam generator.
It is a 'further objectof the invention to provide a novel power generating device which is capable of being mounted in the steam dome of a, steam generating boiler, and which may be employed for operating certain machinery. A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby the steam present in'the steam .dome of the boiler in'which the power device is located may be'released therefrom without operating the power device.
Afurther object of the invention resides in the provision ofa novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby wearing parts of the power device are made readilyaccessible for adjustment or repair; without requiring shutting down thesteam boiler :or cutting off the steam dome.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with the drawings,
wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a steam boiler, and the steam dome thereof, showing therein a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially at right angles to Figure 1.
Referring in. detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a steam boiler preferably Q of the fire tube. type, having the fire tubes 6 and a steam dome '7, all of which are of conventional form.
A rotor housing 8 is secured by its upper part to the under side of the top wall 9 of the steam dome as indicated at 10. As shown in Figure 1, the housing Bis preferably of fiat cylindrical shape having a tangential, depending inlet 11, and a tangential upwardly extending exhaust passage 12, each of which is formed preferably as an integralpart of the housing 8 as by casting or the like. The inletpassage 11 has a lateral opening having valve seat 13, with which is adapted to seat for closing communication through the lateral opening, a valve 14 carried by a valve stem 15 projected through the wall of the passage 11 opposite the lateral opening and mounted in a suitable stuffing box or packing gland 16, and having a hand wheel 17 by means of which the valve may be moved into and out of engagement with the seat 13. A similarly ar- 60 ranged valve 18 is provided in the passage 12 for controlling the exhaust of steam from the exhaust passage 12. It will be observed that the inlet passage 11 and the exhaust passage 12 are substantially longitudinally alined.
The housing 8 is provided in each side with a stufiing box equipped bearing 25, and mounted in said bearings 25, is a rotatable shaft 21 which carries within the housing a rotor 22. 'The rotor 22 is preferably circular in shape which has projecting from its periphery circumferentially spaced tangential vanes 23, the spaces between which form steam pockets 24. 'The outer end of the vanes of the rotor 22 run close to the circumferential wall of the housing 8 so that steam 76 entering the housing 8 through the inlet passage ll, will impinge upon some of the vanes 23, and fill some of the pockets 24. The impact of the steam against the vanes 23 causesrotation of the rotor. The steam trapped in the pockets 8Q 24 exhausts therefrom through the exhaust passage 12 when the pockets reach the same.
Projecting axially from opposite sides of the housing 8, and surrounding the bearings 25 are hollow conical housings 28 having their end of largest diameter disposed outwardly and provided with flanges 29 by which they are secured to the wall of the steam dome by bolts 30. By this means the rotor housing 8 is held in place within the steam dome in steam-tight engagement with the steam dome, so as to prevent passage of steam from the steam dome into the rotor housing and vice versa.
Where the ends of the shaft 21 pass through the walls of the steam dome, there are provided packing glands 27 enclosing anti-friction bearings 26, which carry the ends of the shaft 21. The bearings 25 and 26 may be made accessible for repair or adjustment simply by removing the packing glands 2'7, and since the sub-housings 28 isolate these parts from the steam dome and from the boiler, repairs and adjustments may be made to the bearings without shutting down the boiler or cutting ofi the steam dome from the boiler.
In communication with the lateral valved opening in the inlet passage 11, is a generally horizontal member 35 which is in the nature of a dry pipe having perforations permitting passage of steam thereinto from the steam boiler 5.
For supporting the dry pipe 35, there is provided a bracket such as that designated 36' which is secured as indicated at 37 to the side of the steam dome, and at 38 to the dry pipe.
The direct steam dome 7 is also provided with a steam outlet pipe 40 having a valve 41 therein which is operable by means of a hand wheel 42. As shown in Figure 2 the pipe 40 passes through the upper wall of the steam dome at a point which is displaced with respect to the exhaust 12 and the rotor housing 8, so as to communicate with the interior of the steam dome so as'to enable passing steam directly from the steam dome without passing the steam into the rotor housing and operating the rotor therein, Of course, such direct exhaust of steam from the steam dome requires that the hand valve 14 be closed.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides an auxiliary power device for mounting within the steam dome of a steam generating boiler, to be operated by steam from the boiler which after operating the device may be passed from the device to any desired point for heating or power uses.
Figure 2 discloses the device of the invention connected for driving an electrical generator G, supported ona bracket or the like secured at 51 to the side of the steam dome 7. I prefer to connect-the shaft 21 of my device directly to the generator or other machine to be driven.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is;
1. An auxiliary motive-power for a steam boiler having a steam dome portion, said auxiliary motive-power comprising a rotatable shaft traversing the steam dome, bearings in openings in the walls of the steam dome portion carrying the shaft, a closed motor casing within the steam dome portion receiving and surrounding a portion of the shaft, motor means connected with the shaft within the motor casing, motor casing intake conduit means within the steam dome portion and communicating with the interior of the boiler and with the interior of the motor casing for operatively applying steam to the motor to g means, motor casing exhausting conduit means projecting from the motor casing and from the steam dome portion for connection with steam motivated apparatus to be supplied with steam from the boiler, sub-housings extending axially from opposite sides of the motor housing and surrounding portions of the shaft and a portion of the removable bearings, said sub-housings being in steam-tight engagement with the walls of the steam dome portion and surrounding the openings in the walls which contain the bearings,
whereby said bearings may be removed without shutting down the boiler or cutting off communication of the steam dome portion with the boiler. 2. A power unit comprising a boiler having a steam dome portion, a shaft rotatably mounted across and in the steam dome and having a portion extending from the steam dome for driving connection with a machine, rotary motor means within the steam dome portion and operatively connected with the shaft, closed casing means within the steam dome portion and entirely enclosing the motor means and that part of the shaft which is within the steam dome portion, casing means steam inlet means for applying steam to the rotary motor means, casing means steam exhaust means extending to the exterior of the steam dome portion for conveying steam to apparatus to be supplied with steam by the boiler, said casing means having the greater portion thereof spaced from the steam dome portion so as to be continually surrounded by steam in the boiler whereby undesirable reduction of the temperature and pressure of steam passing from the boiler through the casing means to the exterior of the boiler is avoided, bearings for the shaft mounted in openings in opposed walls of the steam dome portion, and funneLlike extensions on the casing means and surrounding the portions of the shaft exterior of the casing and within the steam dome portion and connection to the opposed walls of the steam dome portion around the said openings and bearings whereby removal and adjustment of the bearings without shutting down the boiler or cutting off the steam dome portion is enabled.
