M. J. VIEIRA. STREET-GUIDE.

N0.-193,3OZ. I Patented July 17, 1877.

Fig-x. F E mmwumu W'ITNESSES INVEJV'TQR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.

IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-GUIDES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,302,

May 21, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MANUEL J. VIEIRA, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street- Guides, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and in which Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.

Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig.2 is a sectional view, looking to one side from a point shown by the dotted line a a.

Theobjeet of my invention is to provide an efiicient method of pointing out the different streets or roads at the crossings or in tersections thereof.-

This is accomplished by attaching a band, A, to posts or poles situated at or near such intersections, which band shall support arms pointing in the direction in which the several streets run.

On these arms is paintedor otherwise aflixed the information in regard to the street direction or name of the place sought to be conveyed.

1 preferably attach my invention to lampposts; but where this is not practicable it can be attached to telegraph or other poles, or to poles erected expressly for its accommodation.

In the drawings, A represents the band or hoop, which is hinged at B and fastened at C, or a thin band may be used without the hinge.

D, E, F, and G are the arms, on which is placed the information desired. They are dated July 17, 1877; application filed provided with a dovetail end, which fits into the dovetailed slot in the band A, and are thereby held in place.

b b b b are the dovetail arms and band unite.

a a is a'dotted line, showing the section on which Fig. 2 is drawn.

The arms D and F show a form especially adapted to street-lamps, as it brings the painted part up to a level with the light of the lamps, so that it can be distinctly seen after night. The straight arms E and G can be used in places where this is unnecessary,as on telegraph-poles, 8:0.

All the arms, by reason of the dovetail joints joints where the b, are easily removable, so that, if oneshonld.

be broken, it would be easy to replace it without going to the expense of a new guide.

The whole device is easily and cheaply made and quickly and firmly placed in position, and on street-lamps especially, by reason of the curved formation of the arms, accomplishes a result not hitherto attained.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an article of manufacture, a street-guide composed of the band A, the upwardly-curved shanks, and the guide-arms, all substantially as herein shown and described.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 12th day of May, A. D. 1877.

MANUEL J. VIEIRA.

In presence of- C. BRADFORD,

I. S. LONG.
