UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAZARUS MORGENTHAU, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ilMPROVEMENT IN TONGUE-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,364, dated August 21, 1877; application filed June 4, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAZABUS MORG-EN-' THAU, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tongue-Gleaner, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of a tongue-cleaner; Fig. 2, a bottom view of a cleaner with a sponge-brush attached 5 and Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections of the same, re spectively on line a: m, Fig. 2, and y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for the use of sick and healthy people an improved tongue-cleaning device, by which the layer or film settling on the tongue may beremovedin perfect and easy manner.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents my improved tongue-cleaner, which consists of a central scraper, B, with concaved knifeedge, bush D, and handles 0 at both sides of the scraper, the sponge-brush following the scraper over the tongue, and leaving the same perfectly dry and clean, as the sponge or other material absorbs the moisture and smaller particles not removed by the scraper.
The sponge-brush D is attached to the rear edge of the scraperportion Bby being stitched to holes of the same, the flat sponge extending then forward to the edge of the scraper.
The sponge may also be medicated by pineneedle extract or other suitable solution, according to the special purpose required.
The cleaner admits the quick and effective scraping of the tongue, so as to keep the same in clean and healthy condition, which is conducive to the preservation of the teeth when used by healthy persons, and of especial advantage for sick persons, for hospital and other uses.
I am aware of the French cleaner now used, the same being a straight elastic strip that is bent at right angles to the tongue, so that the scraping-edge may be carried over the tongue, and requiring to be passed successively over the middle and each side. flat on the tongue, the concave edge adapting itself to the shape of tongue, and cleaning it at one operation; hence What I claim is- A-tongue-cleaner having a central scraper portion and end handles, in combination with an absorbing-brush attached to the scraper, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
