The invention relates to an air filter and more particularly to a device for use in hot air heating systems for air filtering.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same operates as a filter and collects from the air dust and soot as it passes through such device, the latter being intended to be attached to and used in connection with both side wall and fioor registers of the heating system.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the filtering pads are held in place in a novel manner and are readily removable either for cleaning or replacement and when in place will filter the warm or hot air delivered from the hot air heating system.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of this invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally a portion of a vertical wall of a building having therein asuitable opening 10 for accommodating the outlet fiue 11 of a hot air heating system so that the warm or hot air from such systemcan be discharged into an enclosure. This-opening 11 is fitted with a register 12 which may be of any fretted or lattice configuration. The rear side of the register 12 is provided with a flange 13 for the fitting thereto of a two-part frame including the body part 14 and a separable top part 15, the latter being detachably secured to the body part through the use of suitable separable fasteners.

The sides of the body part 14 are formed at 50 their inner faces with vertically disposed uniformly spaced channeled racks 16 in which are fitted filtering members, each including a marginal framing 17 carrying the filtering pads including outside foraminous or wire mesh sections 5 18 and an intermediate wire or steel wool filler 19, the fibers of the said filler being preferably arranged diagonally to the wire mesh and the fibers closely related to each other of such filler to assure a thorough filtering action upon the air as may be passed through the pads. These pads are held in the racks 16 by the top part 15 and can be readily removed for the cleaning thereof or replacement. It may be desirable to have the pads free of the marginal or border frames 17 and their component parts united in any desirable manner.

In Figure 5 of the drawing, there is shown a slight modification, wherein the sides 20 of the body part 21 constituting a carrier for the pads have at each inner face the notched racks 22 for accommodating and holding the pads within the body part 21.

Hinged to the frame including the parts 14 and 15, atthe inner side thereof, is a damper 23 operable from a pulley or push rod 24 projected through the register 12 for manual manipulation and such damper 23 can be held in open position in any desirable manner and manually closed so as to shut off the delivery of warm or hot air through the register 12 at the will of a user thereof.

In Figure 2 of the drawing there is shown by arrows the directional course of the warm or hot air from the fiuell through the pads of the filtering device and discharge through the register.

It will be apparent from Figure 2 of the drawing that the filler 19 in each pad is vacated at a certain area thereof so as to have a free or less obstructed passage of the air in its circuitous course for discharge through the register. These vacant areas are staggered in the series of pads.

It is to be understood that the filter can be used for a cold air register so as to filter the cold air going into the heating system as well as the 1 hot air coming from said system.

Furthermore, it is also tobe understood that the frame including the body part 14 and the top part 15 can be unitary and the pads insertable therein in any desirable manner. Therefore, this frame may be otherwise constructed for the holding of the filtering pads.

What is claimed is:

1. A filtering device of the character described comprising a two-part frame having racks there'- in, filtering pads held within the racks and each including outer reticulated sections and a fibrous filler therebetween, a register fitted with said two- ,part frame, and a regulating damper carried by the two-part frame at the side thereof opposite the register.

2. A filtering device of the character described comprising a support having racks therein, filtering pads held within the racks, each including outer reticulated sections and a fibrous filler therebetween, a register fitted with said support, and a regulating damper carried by said support.

3. A filtering device comprising a register having a flange at one side thereof, a two-part frame including a. body part and a separable top part, the frame being fitted upon the flange of said register, the separable top part of the frame being removably fitted upon the body part, channeled racks arranged in the body part of said frame, a plurality of filtering pads removably held within said racks, and a fibrous filler included in each pad.
