Description
April 24, 1934. B. F. PEASE 1,956,299
TRUSS Filed Jan. 16 1933 BENJAMIN F PEASE INVENTOR sy' rf it ATTORNEY .10 ed studs Patented Apr. 24, 1934 STATS UNE'F restate N'i GFFICE FAT 11 6 Claims.
This invention relates to trusses, particularly to spring frame trusses and to improvements in back pads therefor.
In spring frame trusses of ordinary construc- 5. tion, the rear ends of the frame terminate in spaced relation at the back of the truss. A back pad is positioned on each end and a connecting strap is employed to hold the truss in an operative position. The frame is provided with headwhich project outwardly from the rear face of each pad and the same are connected by a strap having apertures in which said studs are entered. As the heads of the studs project outwardly beyond the strap, the clothing of the wearer is brought into forced contact therewith and is soon worn away or torn.
Objects of the invention are to provide a truss of simple durable construction, which will overcome this objection; which will be highly effi- V cient in use and may be comfortably worn without injuring the clothing.
A further object is to provide a truss having back pads at each end of the truss frame with the outer face of the adjacent ends of the pad offset inwardly to provide a seat for a connecting member whereby the member and the fastening means will be positioned in a plane spaced forwardly from the rear face of the pads and which will present a relatively smooth even surface having no objectionable protruding parts which will tend to tear or wear away the clothing.
The above objects are accomplished and additional ends are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying rawing, it being understood that the invention is not confined to the particular form siown or restricted to the particular type of truss illustrated and that the structure may be 4Q subjected to variations which come within the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a truss constructed in accordance with this invention,
F ure 2 a cross sectional view taken as indicated by the lines 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the improved base plate employed in carrying out the invention and showing the end portion of a spring side member attached thereto.
While the invention is adapted for application to trusses of different types, in the drawing there is illustrated a truss having a continuous spring frame 5 adapted to encircle the body of the wearer with the free ends of the frame 5 terminating in spaced relation at the back of the truss. Each of the free ends of the frame 5 is provided with a pad 6 which is adapted to bear against the back or hip portion of the wearers body. Each pad 5 comprises a base plate '7; a cushion 8 and a pad facing 9 of leather or other suitable material. The base plate 7 is provided with a threaded bore 10 and each of the ends of the frame 5 are positioned flat against the rear face of one of the plates '7 and is secured thereto by means of a screw bolt 11 which is positioned through an aperture in the frame memher and threaded in the bore 10.
The forwardly presented face of each free end portion of the frame 5 is thus positioned in the same plane with the rear face of the plate 7 to which it is secured. Each plate 7 is provided at the free end thereof with an extension 12 which is ofiset inwardly from the plane of the main portion of the plate 7. The offset shoulder 13 is preferably arcuate in form, thus adding materially to the strength and durability of the base plate and providing means for supporting the cushion element 8 and for providing an extension 12 which will possess great rigidity even when the plate '7 is composed of relatively thin material.
The extension 12 on one of the plates 7 is provided with a threaded bore 14 and the extension 12 on the other plate '7 is provided with a glove fastener stud 15 which projects rearwardly from the rear face thereof and is welded, riveted or otherwise secured thereto. The rear face of each of the pads 6 is covered with a layer 16 of leather or other similar material which is secured to the facing 9 by the stitching 17.
In the particular adaptation of the invention shown in the drawing, the layers 8 and 16 are extended forwardly to provide a cover for the frame member 5.
The numeral 18 denotes a connecting strap having one end thereof secured to the extension 12 on one of the plates '7 by means of the screw 19 which is threaded in the bore 14. In the particular form of truss illustrated, the layer 16.
It will thus be seen that this invention provides a truss provided with back pads 6 having the rear face of the adjacent ends thereof offset forwardly to provide a seat for the ends of the fastening element 18a whereby the free ends of the frame 5 may be detachably connected and which has no objectionable protruding studs to wear away or tear the clothing of the wearer.
It will be seen that the layers 9 and 16 completely cover the extension 12 of the base plate 7 forming a pad extension 6a. The inner face of the pad extension 6a is disposed in a plane positioned outwardly from the main bearing face of the pad thereby providing an extension 6a which will not contact with the body of the wearer.
Having thus illustrated my invention and described the same in detail, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a truss, a frame for embracing the body of the wearer, said frame terminating in spaced relation at the back of the truss, a back pad on each end of said frame, said back pads having the adjacent ends thereof offset inwardly to provide a seat for a connecting element, a connecting element and means to detachably secure the connecting element to the offset portions of said pad.
2. In a truss, a frame for embracing the body of the wearer, said frame terminating in spaced relation at the back of the truss, a back pad on each end of said frame, said back pads having the adjacent ends thereof offset inwardly to provide a seat for a connecting element, a connecting element and means to detachably secure one end. portion of said connecting element to the offset portions of one of said pads and snap fastener means for detachably securing the other end of the connecting element to the offset portion of the other pad.
3. In a truss of the character described, a frame, for encircling the body of the wearer, said frame having two end portions terminating in spaced relation at the back of the truss, a back pad on each end portion, an extension on the free end of each pad, each extension having an outer face disposed in a plane spaced inwardly from the outer face of the pad, a strap for connecting said pads and means on said extension for detachably securing the ends of the strap thereto.
4. In a truss of the character described, a spring frame for embracing the body, the free ends of said frame terminating in spaced relation at the back of the truss, a back pad on each end of said frame, each back pad comprising a base plate, means securing said base plate to the frame; an extension on the free end of said base plate, said extension being offset forwardly in relation to said base plate, a cushion element on the inner surface of the main body of the plate, a flexible sheath on said pad, said sheath enclosing said cushion and extension and means associated with said extension and projecting rearwardly therefrom for securing a connecting element thereto.
5. In a truss of the character described, a back pad, said back pad provided on the rear face thereof with a surface offset inwardly from the main surface of the rear face of the pad and means to detachably secure a connecting element fiat against the offset portion of said pad.
6. In a back pad for a truss, a main body pad,
an extension on the free end thereof, the rear
