The objects of this invention are to combine in a single convenient packet and in such a way that may be readily reached for individual or joint use, such ordinarily associated articles, as
for example, the bandage material, adhesive tape, antiseptics, salves and lotions considered desirable or necessary in so-called first aid kits and the like.
Especially, it is an object of this invention to lo/so combine the articles as not to waste any space and in fact, to utilize the space that ordinarily may be left unused in one such, article for the holding of one or more of the other such articles.
In the accompanying drawing, these various 5 features and advantages of the invention are illustrated by way of a number of typical embodiments, but it will be understood that the invention may be made up in many other difierent forms, all within the true spirit and broad o scope of the invention as hereinafter disclosed and claimed.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a combination package in the nature of a reel for carrying a roll of tape and within the center of the reel, separate containers for holding other supplies;
Fig. 2 is a partly broken and sectional end elevation of the same.
The remaining Figures 3 to 11 are views similar to Fig. 1, illustrating various other possible modifications of the invention.
In Figs. 1 and 2 there is illustrated a reel or spool construction consisting of a tubular hub 10, having end flanges or heads 11, secured thereon,
as by being 'pressed over and into annularly grooved portions 12, formed near the ends of the hub.
Interiorly, the tubular hub is shown as partitioned into separate compartments 13, 14, by means of a disc 15, forced to its seat in an internal annularly grooved portion 16 of the hub.
The two compartments in the hub of the spool are closed by suitable end caps 17, which may be engaged friction tight over the protruding 5 end portions 18 of the hub, extending beyond the spool heads or flanges 11.
In this particular form of the invention, bandage material may be the article carried by the hub of the spool'between the end flanges and a suitable antiseptic material may be located in one of the compartments 13, 14, with adhesive tape in the other compartment.
The s'pooled material may be protected by a suitable annular cover 19, slipped endwise over the spool flanges and removably held by its frictional engagement thereover. With such construction, each one of the three articles is protectei by its own cover and any one of the three may be exposed and used without uncovering the w others, or any two or all three may be uncovered at a time in accordance with the exigencies of the occasion.
The various parts may be made of light sheet metal or the like. The internal partition 15 and the external end flanges 11 brace the tubular center both internally and externally and these may be located either symmetrically as indicated or nearer one end than the other to provide diiferent spacing for different widths of material and sizes of articles, etc.
The form of the invention disclosed in Fig. 3 difiers from that first illustrated by making the caps 17 of the-internally fitting type instead of the externally fitting type first shown. The second form 01' the invention eliminates the need for any projecting hub portions, such as indicated at 18 in Fig. 1, so that the ends of the hub can be substantially flush with the spool In Fig. 4, the holder compartments in the hollow center of the spool are provided by cans or containers 13', 14' of a size to frictionally fit in the hub and separately entered therein from opposite ends of the spool. This construction allows use of the flush end spool construction described in connection with Fig. 3 and has the advantage that the spools may be sold separately or sold with one or more holders packed in the hollow center of the same.

, except that one of the holders in the spool center is a small size spool 20 adapted to carry tape or other material and having the outer end flange of the same of a proper size to form a closure to the end of the main spool hub.
The small inner spool 20 and the inserted can or holder 13' in Fig. 5, may be entirely disconnected, so that one or the other may be selectively removed or they may be connected together endto-end, so that both will come out together. In this particular form, the two holders are shown as seating fiu'sh with the ends of the hollow spool hub.
In Fig.6, a further variation is shown in which there is an inner spool 21' seating in the center but of substantially/ the full length of the main spool and having a cupped end head 22 of substantially the same circular dimensions as the adjoining end flange of the main spool and thereby forming a holder which may contain for example salve, powder or other material, said holder having its own removable cover 23.
Fig. 7 illustratesa construction on the order of Fig. 1, but modified by having thefiush construction at the right hand end of the spool as shown and by having separate holders, such as small spool 20 and can 14' removably seated in the compartment 14. These holders 20 and 14' may be attached together to come out as a single unit or they may be separate, so that if desired,
dependently replaceable covers closing the oppothe small can or holder 14' only can bewithdrawn, leaving the small spool 20 in its place in the hollow hub.
Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate how the hub center may 5 be made of glass or other suitable composition.
In the first of these views, the spool center is a double-ended glass jar 24, carrying the spool flanges 11 and having an intermediate partition 25, forming a bottom for the two jars, whose ends are closed at the ends of the spool by individual screw caps 26, 27, the latter carrying a small can or holder 28 with an individually removable cover 29. a
The construction of Fig. 9 differs from that of Fig. 8 in that the two jars are actually separate, being removably connected end-to-end as by a screw coupling at 30 between the bottom of one and the open top of the other. Also in this latter view, the end container 28 carried by the jar cap 27 is separably mounted therein as by removably frictionally seating in an upstanding flange 32 on the jar cap 27, instead of being held by the prongs or bent-over tongues as at 33, Fig. 8.
Instead of being connected as in Fig. 9, that is nesting one inside the other, the two jars may be entirely separate as at 34, 35, Fig. 10 and have their screw caps 36 attached together back-to- -back as by prongs 33,-so that one or the other, or both jars may be opened by simply unscrewing them from these attached caps. The spool flanges 11 may be mounted on these jars or these jars may be small enough to be inserted as containers within the tubular hub of the spool, after themanner of the containers 13, 14' in Fig. 4.
The several illustrations show how various articles, whether they be directly related in ordinary use or not, may be combined in a compact package, convenient for single or combined use of the several articles.
While the invention is particularly important as a first-aid for travelers kit, it will be appreciated that there are many other uses and that the claims are to be broadly construed accordingly.
Fig; 11 servesto illustrate how, if desired, a bottle or vial 36 may be carried in the package, within the hollow hub 10 of the spool structure, which in, this case is shown as lengthened in the hub at 37, to provide space for the bottle and to carry the additional flange or spool head 11'. The latter, in conjunction with adjoining flange 11, provides a secondary spool space for tape or the like, which might be used with' gauze or bandage material wound on the main body of the spool. The bottle or container 36 has a suitable cap or stopper 38, and if desired, may be enclosed in the spool hub at one or both ends by covers such as indicated at 17 and 17, Figs. 1 and 3. Also, if desired, the bottle may be in a separate can or holder inserted in the spool hub. In this construction, as in the others, the spool structure may be covered by a slip-on cover such as indicated at 19 in Fig. 1. In a construction like Fig. 11, this slip-on cover can be made long enough to engage over all three of the spool flanges 11, 11'.
What is claimed is;
1. A combination-package comprising a spool consisting of a tubular spool center and end flanges engaged thereon and removable and insite ends of said tubular spool center, said covers including caps directly engaged with the end portions of the tubular spool center.
2. A combination package comprising a spool consisting of a tubular spool center and end flanges engaged thereon, removable and independently replaceable covers closing the opposite ends of said tubular spool center, said covers including caps directly engaged with the end portions of the tubular spool center and .a partition within the spool center separating the interior of the same into compartments individually accessible by way of the removable covers.
3. A combination package, comprising a spool structure having a hollow core and spool heads affixed to said hollow core,, article holding means removably seated within said hollow core of the spool, flanged end covers removably and replaceably connected with said spool structure and closing the opposite ends of said hollow core over the contained article holding means therein and whereby said hollow spool serves as a container and holder for the inserted article holding means.
4. A combination package comprising a tubular open-ended core, spool flanges carried thereby, a transverse partition in said core separating the same into compartments open to the opposite ends of the spool structure, a removable and replaceable cover engaged with one end portion of the open core and thereby providing a removable and replaceable closure for the compartment which is open to'that end of the spool structure, an article holder removably seated in, the compartment which is open to the opposite end of the spool structure and a removable and replaceable article holder engaged in the open end of said last mentioned compartment and releasably retaining the removable article holder therein.
5. A combination package comprising a tubular spool core, spool flanges thereon, a partition in said tubular core providing separate compartments therein open to the opposite ends of the spool structure and caps removably and replaceably engaged with the opposite open ends of the tubular spool core.
6. A combination package, comprising a spool structure having a hollow core, heads at the ends of said hollow core for protecting material wound upon said core, a slip cover slideable over the core into frictional engagement with the head at one end of said hollow core to removably enclose the material wound upon the core, article holding means removably seated within the hollow core of the spool, covers closing the opposite ends of said hollow spool core, at least one of said covers being a flanged end cap removably and replaceably connected with said spool structure enclosing the end of the hollow core over the contained article holding means therein and whereby said hollow spool serves as a container and holder for the inserted article holding means and whereby the latter is accessible upon removal of the flanged end cap without disturbing the slip cover which protects the material wound on the spool and said slip cover being removable and replaceable independently of the flanged removable core cover for providing access to the material wound on the spool without disturbing contents carried within the hollow core of the spool.
