My invention relates to receptacles for hold ing garbage etc., the cover of which is lifted by.

14 indicates slots formed in the outer receptacle through which extends a foot lever 15 which is fulcrumed on a pin 16 which extends across the receptacle as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

The lower edge of the can is formed with an upwardly extending flange-portion 17, provided with a hole 18, to receive the hook end 19 of a 55 helical spring 20 the upper end of which is formed with a hook which extends through a hole 21 formed in the lever 15.

The spring 20 is under a tension sufficient to almost balance the weight of the cover 11 when in its closed position and serves to assist in lifting the cover when the foot is placed upon the step 22, thereby obviating any tendency of the receptacle to tip forward and also operating to prevent the cover from slamming in its closing action.

The lever 15 is provided with a hole 16 and a pin 1'? connects the lever 15 with a vertically extending flat rod 23 formed of sheet metal and bent to provide two side walls which provide bifurcated ends which enclose the ends of the co-acting lever elements, and the upper end of which is provided with a hole 24 through which a pin 25 extends to connect the rod 23 with a downward extending bracket 26 secured to the extension piece 27 of the cover.

28 indicates a bracket secured to the back portion of the receptacle at its upper end, and is provided with a hole 29 at its outer end to receive a cross-pin 30 which extends through said hole and through a downwardly extending bracket 31 secured to the extension piece 27.

The pin 30 serves as a fulcrum for the cover.

A rectangular shaped opening is formed in the front side of the cover at 32, and a rectangular shaped box 33 is secured therein by welding or soldering the flanges 34 respectively to the underside of the cover.

The box is opened. at its under side to receive a soft rubber pad 35 which is firmly secured therein by indenting the box after the pad is inserted, as indicated at 36 respectively.

The lower end of the rubber extends below the edges of the box and is adapted to contact with the top beaded edge 3'? of. the inner-removable receptacle 38. The under-side of said bead 3'7 normally rests on the upper edge of the head 12 of the outer receptacle.

39 indicates a ball which swings on pivotpins 40 respectively, and which may be swung upward in the position shown in Fig. 3, to support the cover in said position, and which also serves as a handle by means of which the inner receptacle may be removed from the outer receptacle for purposes of dumping and cleaning, as will be readily understood.

If desired, the inner receptacle may be removed, and the outer receptacle may be used for receiving scrap paper and other dry material, but when moist material such as garbage is used, the inner receptacle should always be placed within the outer receptacle to receive the same.

The bail 39 may be provided with an extending arm 39' which may extend upwardly when the ball is swung at one side of the receptacle, to support the cover, and which may be swung down into the can when the bail is in its opposite position so that the arm extends downwardly and does not form an obstruction for anything being thrown into the receptacle. By supporting the cover in a partially open position, small quantities of waste material may be deposited in the receptacle without the necessity of operating the foot lever each time a deposit is made. The outer receptacle may be suitably painted or enameled in any desirable color, and presents a neat appearance.

Constructed as above, the waste receiver is sanitary, easy to keep clean and does not emanate obnoxious odors. Its cover is easily operated, unaccompanied by any tendency f the device to tip, and closes silently.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new 1. A waste receiver of the character described comprising a casing, a cover attached thereto in swinging relation, lever mechanism connected with the cover, and a spring connecting the easing and lever, and acting to restrain the velocity of the cover in its closing movement; said cover having a box-insert adapted to hold a yielding material to cushion the cover when in contact with the receptacle and an inner removable container suspended from the upper end of the outer receptacle, said cover having a depending flange beaded at its lower edge and extending outside of the upper edge portion of said receptacle and resting thereon in overlapping relation thereto.

2. A waste receiver of the character described having a cover attached thereto in swinging relation, a pedal operated lever for upwardly swinging said cover, said lever having its fulcrum supported by the receptacle, a spring normally tensioned between the receptacle and said lever and arranged to balance a portion of the weight of the cover to assist in swinging the cover upwardly and to retard the velocity of its downward movement.

A waste receiver of the character described comprising a casing, a container having an out- Wardly extending flange adjacent its upper edge resting on the upper edge of said casing whereby the container is removably suspended within the casing, a cover for the container attached to the casing in swinging relation positioned and adapted to fit the upper end of the container, a pedal operated lever for upwardly swinging the cover, said lever having its fulcrum supported by the casing, and a spring normally tensioned between the casing and said lever arranged to balance a portion of the weight of the cover to assist in swinging the cover upwardly and to retard the velocity of its downward movement.

A waste receiver of the character described comprising a casing, a container having an outwardly extending flange adjacent its upper edge resting on the upper edge of said casing whereby the container is removably casing, a cover for the container attached to the casing in swinging relation positioned and adapted to fit the upper end of the container, and a pedal operated lever for swinging the cover, said container having a swinging bail and said bail having an extension arm adapted to support the cover in an open position when the bail is swung to one side.
