Patented Sept. 25, 1934 y DISPLAY CONTAINER William F. Punte, Syracuse, N. Y., assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York,
N. Y., a corporation of New York Application September 11, 1933, Serial No. 689,015
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a display container and more particularly to a container having an inner display top.
An object `oi the invention is to provide a con tainer of the above type wherein the display top includes a rigid sheet metal frame to which a transparent disk is attached as a unit prior to the insertion of said display top in the container.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of a container embodying the improvements.
Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale showing v`l5' the upper end of the container and the display top in vertical section prior to the placing of said display top in said container.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View through a portion of the container with the display top inserted and the slip cover for the container in place.
The invention is directed to a display container which includes a body portion having a removable cover preferably of the slip type. Said body portion is shaped adjacent the open end thereof so as to provide a shoulder which is spaced away from the open end. This shoulder forms a seat for a display top which fits within the open end of a container; said display top includes a sheet metal frame and a transparent disk which is attached thereto, said frame is ring-shaped and the metal of the ring is bent intermediate the side edges thereof so as to provide an inwardly extending horizontal flange which strengthens the ring and serves as a support for the transparent disk.
The metal of the ring above the ledge is rolled inwardly and downwardly so as to clamp the disk against the iiange. The metal of the ring beneath the flange is rolled upwardly and outwardly so as to Contact with the flange. These rolled portions of the ring, together with the horizontal iiange, make a very strong and rigid ring frame to which the transparent disk is firmly clamped.
This display top is placed in the container so as to rest on the shoulder and the top edge of the container may if desired, be bent inwardly to retain the display top on its seat. The container is provided with a slip cover of metal which pro- 'y 50 tects the transparent disk so that said transparent disk may be made of a fragile transparent material such as cellophane or the like.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the
container embodying the invention consists of a body portion 1 of sheet metal, to which is attached formed of sheet metal, said frame member is ring-shaped and is bent intermediate its edges so as to provide a horizontal inwardly extending flange 6. This flange-forms the double purpose of strengthening the ring frame member and a seat for a disk of `transparent material, which is indicated at 7. This disk 7 rests on the ange 6. The portion 8 of the ring above the flange is rolled inwardly and downwardly as indicated at 9 so as to contactl with the transparent disk 7 for clamping the same againstthe flange 6. The portion of the ring 10 below the flange is rolled inwardly and upwardly until it is brought into Contact with the flange 6, as indicated at 11. The inwardly extending flange 6, together with these rolled portions above and below the same, make a very strong frame member for supporting the transparent disk. The disk may be made of fragile material such as cellophane.
'I'his display top or panel is made up and the disk attached, after which it is inserted in the open end of the container and seated against the shoulder 3. The container is closed by a cover 12 which is provided with a depending flange 13 rolled into a strengthening bead at its lower edge. This cover is so dimensioned as to slip down over the body portion and make frictional contact therewith. The cover therefore may be readily slipped onto or off from the container.
If desired, the display panel may be slipped into the container after. it is iilled and the container closed with a slip cover so that by removing `the cover the contents of the container may be inspected through the transparent disk. It is preferable, however, to attach this display top or panel to the container and this is accomplished by `rolling inwardly the extreme edge portion 14 of the transparent panel but wherein the contents cannot be removed without breaking the fragile disk or bending the metal to remove the panel.
The slip vcover is preferably formed with an inset portion l5, which substantially contacts with the outer face of the transparent panel to aid in supporting the saine. Should it be desired to attach the panel to the container before it is lled; the container is lled through the bottom and then the end secured to said iilled container.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set 'forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A display container comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, said body portion having a seat or shoulder adjacent its open Vend and a display top disposed within said body portion on said seat or shoulder, said display top including a sheet metal ring frame bent between its edges to forni a substantially horizontal inwardly extending strengthening flange and a transparent disk resting on one face of said flange, the edge portion of said ring above said flange being rolled inwardly and downwardly to contact with and clamp said disk against said ilange, the lower portion of said ring being rolled inwardly and upwardly substantially into Contact with said iiange.
2. A display container comprising a body portion and a removable cover therefor, said body portion having a seat or shoulder adjacent its open end and a display top disposed within said body portion on said seat or shoulder, said display top including a sheet metal ring frame bent between its edges to form a substantially horizontal inwardly extending strengthening flange and a transparent diskresting on one i'ace of said ange, the edge portion of said ring above said ange being rolled inwardly and downwardly to contact with and clamp said disk against said iiangre, the lower portion of said ring being rolled inwardly and upwardly substantially into contact with said ange, said bodyv portion being rolled inwardly at the upper end thereof for clamping said display top against said seat or shoulder and said cover having a depending iiange forming an outside slip connection with said body portion.
