Description

March 12, 1935. W, |||ER|NG 1,994,218
CIGARETTE PACKAGE HOLDER Filed 0G13. 2l, 1930 ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 12, 1935 1,994,218 i CIGARETTE PACKAGE HOLDER William C. Hiering, Newark, N.f J., assigner to J.
E; Mergott Company, tion of Delaware' Application October 21,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to cases* for holding packages of cigarettes.
At the present time, the majority of brands of cigarettes on the market are packed in cartons of a standard size. When these cartons, which Vare made of paper, are carried in the pocket, the
cigarettes become disarranged therein, broken and gerenally rendered undesirable for smoking purposes.
It is an object of this invention to provide a case for carrying a standard package of cigarettes in a manner to protect the cigarettes from damage.
A further object is to provide a means for opening andclosing this case, which means may be easily manipulated by the same hand which may be holding the case.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement ofY parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 represents an end view of a preferred form of the invention, with covers ina closed position.
Figure 2 represents a similar view with covers in an open position.
Figure 3 represents a side view, partially in section. Y
Figure 4 represents an end View of a modified form.
V Figure 5 represents an interior end view of the 1 modified form.
Figure 6 represents a side view partially in section, of the modified form.
Referring to the drawing, in Figure 1 is shown a cigarette package holding case having end walls 7, provided with narrow flanges upon which are hingedly mounted a pair of cover members 8, the latter being normallymaintained in a closed condition by torsion springs 10 surrounding the pivot pins 9.
Attached to o-ne end wall 7 is a narrow pocket 11, having a slot 12 in which slides a pin 14, mounted on a bar 13 slidable in the pocket 11. The pin 14 limits the sliding moving of the bar 13. Fixed to the upper end of bar 13, outside of the pocket l1, is a button 15, and pivotally connected to the bar 13 at 17 are a pair of links 16, which Yhave their opposite ends pivotally connected to the cover members at 18.
In operation, the covers 8 are placed in an open position by pressing on the button l5 t0 move Newark, N. J., a corporal v1930, serialNo.1,490,169 A (c1. 20s- 41) the bar 13 upwardly to cause the links 16 to spread the cover members apart.
When the bar 13 has been moved suiiiciently to place the links 16 in alinement, the cover members 8 will remain in the open position With- 5 out further'pressure on the button 15. To close, the covers, the button 15 is moved slightly downward to break the alinement of the links 16. and the springs 10 immediately return the covers to the closed position. Y l0 In the modified form shown in` Figures 4, 5 and 6, one of the end walls 7a of the case is provided with a slot 12a, in which isl slidable a button 15a. The covers 8a are hingedly connected to the end walls as in Figure 1 and are normally maintained l5 in a closed condition by torsion springs 10a, surrounding the pivot pins 9a.
Mounted on the interior surface of wall 7a is a pocket 11a, in which is slidably mounted a plate 19 having rack teeth 20 in mesh with a 2G pinion 21, pivotally mounted at 22 on the Wall 7a.' The pinion 21 also engages a rack 23 slidably mounted in the pocket, and has a pair of links 16a pivoted at 17a to its upper end, the links being also pivotally connected to the cover mem- 25 bers 8a and 18a.. The rack bar 23 has a recess 24 which cooperates with a lug 25 to limit the upward movement of the rack bar.
When the button 15a which is xed to plate 19 is moved downward, the rack 20 rotates the pin- 30 ion 21, which in turn causes the rack bar 23 to move upward to cause the link 16aI to move the cover members to an open position.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appendedclaims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
l. A cigarette package holder comprising a case having end walls, a pair of cover members hingedly secured to said case, spring means engaging the cover members and case to normally hold the cover members in closed position, a pocket secured to one of the end Walls, a bar slidable vertically in said pocket, a pin secured to the bar, 0
said pocket having .a slot in which the pin is slidable, and a pair of links pivotally secured, at their inner ends, to the bar, and, at their outer ends, to the cover members, said links being of such length that when the pin is moved to the upper extremity of the slot, the cover membersV will be held by the links in open position, and the links will be in horizontal alignment and will hold that position against the tension of the spring means engaging the cover members, and, when the pin is manually moved away from the upper extremity of the slot, the alignment of the links will be brokenand thetensionrofthe spring means `Will 'return 'the cover members to their closed position. v
2. A cigarette package holder comprising a caseVV having end Walls, a pair of cover members hingedly outer ends to the cover membersl said links being being of such length and the points of pivotalV connection of the ends of the links to the bar and to the cover members being so arranged that whenY at-whichltheilirikslare infhoriz'ontalaligfnment, the
parts will remain in that position against'the tension of the spring means engaging the cover members until the bar is manually moved. in
secured to said case, spring meansngaging :the ithe'oppo'stefiirection, breaking the alignment of cover members and case to normally hold lthecover members in closed sposition, appbcketgseV cured to one of the end Walls, a bar slidable vertically in said pocket, and aipair oflinksppivotally secured at their inner endstothebar and'at 'their -the linksfand the tension of the spring means will return the lr-c'over members to their closed positioni l n v v W'ILLIAM.C.
