scratched or marred or broken under conditions offulse. I I c I Another object is to provide a compact which affords excellent mirror facilities both when the compact is closed and wheniopened during use.
In the accompanying drawing in which ,is shown one of various possible embodiments of the-several features of the invention, H Fig.' 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the compact in closed position,
Fig. 2 isa dropped perspectivelview of the constituent elements thereof, I
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional View 251 onV a larger scale, taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a detailfragmentary view of the hinge between thecup and the bezeLand Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. I Referring now to the drawing, the compact includes a rigid body preferably of vitreous material,` which may include a back element comprising a silver-backed glass plate I0 preferably beveled-at I0' and a face element comprising a thicker` annular body II preferably of a vitreous 'materiaL which may also be of glass, peripherally'bevele'd atII, and having preferablya gunmetal or other colored, mirror back. The two elements, ID and Il making up the body are securely bonded together preferably by'an annular c sheet I2 of Celluloid which may be covered with shellac `and ,theV adhesiveness of which is developed by compressing these elements together. The `powder receptacle I3 is a flat sheet metal A`cup snugly lfitting theinner periphery I4 of the annular face element and provided with a rim I5 engaging the front of the face element and with an outer bead I6 protruding outwardly and contacting said face element at its outer rim I6'. The cup is firmly secured in the body, preferably by interposed plastic cement I'I.
The cupl I3is1 provided with a cover, usually a hinged cover. Preferably thiscover includes a sheet metal bezel B which may conveniently bel made of two piecesincluding an inner or body I piece comprising a flat ring I9 with a skirtv I9 from the inner periphery thereof and an outeror frame piece crimped about the ring as at 20' and l having an inturned, preferably an obliquely inturned flange 2 I. piece has a looped tongue 22 protruding through a corresponding gap 23 in the crimped conformation of the frame piece 20 andencircling a pintle pin 24 retained under the bead I6by loops 'I or eyes 25 integral with said bead. Diametrical- 10v 1y opposite the hinge loop 22 the ring I8 has an integral nger tab 26 protruding through a corresponding gap 21 in the crimped edge 29 of the frame piece. The bezel skirt I9 also has a snap protuberance 40 immediately below finger tab 26, l5
coacting with a corresponding depression` or aperture 4I in the cup I3 to hold the coverclose'd by a spring snap action.
Locked within the bezel are a pair of rigid plates 29 and.30 in back to back relation. The'20 l.v
outer plate 29 preferably is beveled at 29 to engage the inturned ange 2| of the bezel. The inner plate 30 which is also preferably beveled at 30 is looked in Vposition by a sheet metal lock ring 3|, preferably provided with a" concentric 25 @Y groove formation 32 affording resiliency and en-` Y gaging the skirt I9 at its outer peripheral face, the inner at edge of said ring engaging the bevel 39 of the inner plate.
Adequately to lock said plates within the bezel, 30"
it is preferred to interpose one or more sheet metal cross pieces therebetween. These cross pieces may be strips of brass 33 of length some-i what greater than the diameter of the bezel, preferably ground as at 33 at their extremities, each L35 strips 33 and 34 may be interposed at right angles to each other, or, if desired, a unitary spider f with three, four or more radial arms mayrbeused f to advantage. 50=
In the preferred embodiment, the inner beveled plate 30 is a glass mirror having a silveredback. While the outer beveled plate 29 maybe: of any suitable material, preferably vitreous,` it
is desirablefto form thismember also ofglass. 553? PATENT OFFICE Preferably, the inner or body! 5I.:
By this means, the interven- 40M 1 For ornamental effect, the outer glass plate 23 may be coated at its inner face with a suitable paint or enamel. In a desirable construction, the inner face of said plate has a central depression 5 35 which may be silvered prior to application of the paint or enamel backing. Thus, the front of said plate has a polished enamelled metal-like appearance, although the exposed face is of glass plate and therefore not subject to scratching, chippingorother injury to the paint or enamel coating atthe protected inner face.
Preferably, one of the lock strips 34 extends along the depression 35 and the major portion of its thickness is thus lodged within the thickness of the outer plate 29, thereby rendering the cover construction atter than it otherwise would be. In a desirable construction the strip 34 alone is used, its ends being accommodated atthe Agaps in the bezel provided by hinge loop 22 and linger tab 26.
Within the cup '|3-.isdisposed .the .supply of powder `36 overwhich is superposed thefusual framed sift disk 3l on which lies the conventional powder -pui 38 pressed home by the mirror plate 25; 30when the device is closed.
yBy the arrangement disclosed, the back of the device constitutes a serviceable mirror, accessible without the need for opening the compact, while infuse, Athercompact when opened, exposes the :mirror 'at the back of the cover.
'It will of course, be understood that the Vskirt 190i the bezel could beduplicated at the front face, thereof, and each of the plates 2e and 3B.
could be separately locked in place by duplication of the lock ring 3l to retain the -outer plate in' place.
'It rwill be clear that the bezel arrangement for the plates 29 and 3U is of more general application in relations other 'than for compact covers, 1o-although it finds itsfpreferred utility for the latteruse.
- The powder compact is `shown circular, but it is clear .thatii't .could be made hexagonal or 'of any other ornamental design. l' 'It will thus be seen that-there is herein described an varticle in which the several features of this Ainvention are embodied, and which article attains the various objects of the invention and is well suited to meet the requirements of Vpractical use.
As many'changes could be made in the above Y 60- A'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- .,lnA powder compact comprising a vitreous Y bodyrhaving a closed bottom, a sheet metal cup cemented in a corresponding depression in the 65`top of said body and having an upstanding rim bead exposed at the face of said body.
