5 Claims.
5 tion of an article as mentioned which is characterized by an upper jaw for supporting an ornament and having a projection at the center of its inner end, and a lower jaw of two layers in which the lower layer has its inner end formed with a pair of spaced bearings located on opposite sides of said projection and pivotally connected therewith by a pintle pin.
As another object the invention contemplates the arrangement of a cylindrical portion on the outer end of the lower jaw continuing into the upper layer thereof and extending inwards and over the lower layer and terminating in a nger extending beneath said projection and through the lower layer to a position in the vicinity of the pivotal connection of the jaw members to act as a stop for limiting the opening of the jaw.
Still further the invention proposes the provision of a cam portion on the projection and engaging against said nger for holding the top jaw member either in the closed or the opened position.
Furthermore, the invention proposes the association of links with said'safety clip snap, each link to have a transverse rod associated with a portion of the safety clip snap in such a manner so as to prevent the accidental disengagement of these parts.
Another object of thisA invention is ythe construction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention', and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:- Y
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary sectional view as thoug taken on the line I--I of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a safety .clip snap device constructed according to this invention and shown associated with a pair of links.
Fig. 3 is a bottom elevational view of Fig. 2.'
Fig. 4 is an end elevational view looking in the direction of the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view as though taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4, but illustrating the clip snap in an open position.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but illustrating the clip snap in its closed position.
Fig. '7 is a plan view of another form of safety clip snap device associated with a belt.
Fig. 8 is a similar view to Fig. 7 showing the 5 safety clip snap device associated with a shoulder strap of a garment.
The safety clip snap for bracelets, belts, shoulder straps, etc., according to this invention, comprises an upper jaw member I0 for supporting an l0 ornament II, and having a projection I2 at the center thereof at its inner end. A lower jaw member I3, consisting of layers I3a and I3b, has its lower layer formed at its inner end with a pair of spaced bearings I4 located on opposite 15 sides of the projection I2. A pintle pin I5 engages through the bearings I4 and the projection I2 for pivotally connecting the jaw members.
A cylindrical portion I6 is formed'on the outer end of the jaw member I3 and constitutes the 20 tion I2 and which passes through an opening I8 25 formed in the lower layer. The finger Il terminates in the vicinity immediately behind the pivot of the jaw members and is adapted to limit the opening of the jaw members, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5. It should be noted that when the jaw members are moved to the open position, the ornament I I strikes against the end of the ringer. This limits the pivoting of the jaw members.
'I'he projection I2 is formed with a cam portion I 2 which engages against the base end'of the nger II. 'I'his cam portion |23 functions to maintain the jaw members either in the open or in the closed positions. For example, in Figs. 1 and 5 the cam portion I2a is shown engaged against the base portion of the finger I 'I to maintain the open position. In Fig. 6 the cam portion I2a is shown moved around through substantially 60 to a position in which it engages a different portion of the finger Il to maintain the jaw members in the closed position. 'Ihe free end of the jaw member I0 is formed with a hook portion I 9 adapted to engage the outer contour of the cylindrical portion I6 for latching the jaw members together. This is clearly shown in Fig. 6.
The clip snap device is associated with a brace- 50 through the cylindrical portion I6 so that `the clip 55 is permanently but pivotally connected with this link. Ihe transverse bar 22 of the link 2| engages in the space between the jaws and has a natural tendency, when the bracelet is worn to assume a position at the inner end of the jaw, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
If the jaw members accidentally open the transverse bar 22 of the link will be maintained in its engaged position in the jaw because the jaw members are limited to open only through substantially 60. 'If the link 2| does move towards the open end of the jaw, it will still be restrained from disconnecting the jaw member by reason o! the transverse bar 22 coming in contact with the bent end I9 of the upper jaw member.
In Fig. 7 a diierent shape of the safety clip snap device is shown to be attached to the ends 20', 2|' of a belt 23 and in Fig. 8 to a garment 20" and shoulder strap 2|" to permit ready locking and separation of same.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is tov be understood that we do not limitourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all forms coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
