The ordinary truncheons or clubs used by policemen are substantially cylindrical and with the end opposite the handle squared off, that is, formed in a. plane at right angles to the axis of the truncheon or slightly rounded. As a result, the onw differences which are possible to secure in the effect of blows by said truncheon are those caused by change in the force of the blows. Furthermore, the end of the truncheon which is 1 frequently used for the purpose offlprodding the opponent is not formed for most marked results.

It is an object of the invention to provide a truncheon of this character so shaped as to provide a choice of effects which may be produced by a blow of .the same force.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a truncheon having a rounded striking surface and in addition thereto having an angula striking surface, which latter in extreme cases may constitute'a very formidable weapon, much more so than the rounded surface.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a truncheon so shaped at its ends as to localize the effect of a thrust whereby to increase its effect upon the recipient.

a It is a further object of the invention to provide a means of securing a retaining thong in suchamannerastoaidtheuserinswinging the truncheon to the desired position in the hand when the truncheon is suspended by the thong from the hand.

My new truncheon is a defensive weapon intended primarily for the use of police and others subject to assault, and is desired to aid in the suppression of malfeasance.

The invention is fully disclosed in the accom- D nyin drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved policemans truncheon;

In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, I is the handle of the truncheon and is of conventional configuration for such grips. 2 is the main body portion thereof formed with a head 3 and two striking surfaces 4 and .5 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. rounded portion 4 and the angular part 5 is made to render the truncheon useful both in handling mild cases of disorder, when the rounded portion 4 will be used in quelling a miscreant, and in serious encounters which demand strenuous treatment when the angular part 5 will be brought into use, which will make it much easier for the'oflicer to strike such a stunning blow as will render the victim unconscious.

The head end 3 of the truncheon is given at moreor less conical configuration as indicated at 6 to very greatly increase the effect of a Jab of a given force to the victim. The effect of such use may be made greater or less by a decrease or increase of the angles of the conical portion with respect to the base, and the pain which may be caused by such use may be made very severe by utilization of the form shown, so that such use may well take the fight out of the opponent or cause him to drop his hands whether he hands contain a striking weapon or a flrea rrg, leaving opportunity for the omcer to strike a ow with the truncheon.

My truncheon is provided with the usual wrist thong I, but in the preferred-formshown it is secured in an unusual and novel manner. In

' the form shown the hole for the thong is bored through the truncheon at suchan an le as will cause the truncheon to assume the most efl'icacious position when swung into play by the officer or other party properly using it.

I claim as my invention-.

1. A policemans truncheon formed with two symmetrical striking surfaces one substantially cylindrical and the other substantially V-shape.

2. A policeman's u'uncheon formed with a pping surface having finger grips formed on one edge thereof, a striking surface of v formation on the same side and extending from said gripping surface and a curved striking surface diametrically opposite said v-shaped striking surface,

3. A policemans truncheon formed with a shaped handle, a striking surface of V-shape cross section, a circular striking surface diametrically opposite said V striking surface, and a head oval in cross section and terminating in a substantial cone.

4. A policemans truncheon formed with .a shaped handle, a striking surface of v-shape cross section, a circular striking surface diametrically opposite said V stinking surface, a 55 a substantial cone, and, a thong-retaining aperture formed above said handle at an angle to the axis of the truncheon.

5. A policemans truncheon formed with a shaped handle, a striking surface of v-shape cross section, a circular striking suri'ace diametrically opposite said V striking surface, an oval head terminating in a substantial cone, and a thong-retaining aperture i'ormed above the handle symmetrically located with respect to the axis of the truncheon and at an angle thereto.

6. A policemans truncheon formed of material tapering from the handle end to the head end and of general oval outline, a shaped handle formed at one end thereof, a. conical head formed at the other end, a section between the handle and the head so shaped as to present on one side thereof a substantially V-shaped surface and on the diametrically opposite side thereof a substantially cylindrical surface, and a thong-retaining aperture above the handle symmetrically positioned with respect to the axis of the trlmcheon and disposed at an angle thereto.

7. A policemans truncheon composed of a handle portion and a striking portion, said striking portion having a substantially V-shaped portion adjacent the handle and a substantially cylindrical portion adjacent its outer end.

8. A policemans truncheon comprising a handle and a striking portion, said striking portion formed with diametrically opposite striking surfaces, one being substantially cylindrical throughout its length, the other formed with a substantialLv V-shaped portion adjacent the handle and a substantially cylindrical portion adjacent its outer end.
