IMPROVEMENT IN BARRELS FOR SHIPPING BOTTLED LIQUORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,259, dated May 28, 1878 application filed May 9, 1878. v
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAwUnL STRAUSS, of Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Barrel for Shipping Bottled Liquors, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved barrel for shipping bottled liquor. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with head removed; Fig. 3 is a top view of the head, and
Fig. 4 a detail vertical transverse section of the locking device for holding the head in position in the barrel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved barrel or package for shipping bottled liquors, and especially bottled beer, in such a manner that the packages may behandled with greater facility than the boxes in which such bottles are shipped at present, and that, furthermore, the bottles may be so packed as to be perfectly safe, and not exposed to the danger of getting injured or broken, the bottles being so supported in the barrel that there is a very small weight on any part of the same. The barrel may be securely locked, and the bottles arranged therein so that every bottle is separated from the remaining bottles, and may be taken out without disturbing the rest.
The barrel is also of great advantage for reshipping and returning the empty bottles, and as every bottle can be taken out with great facility, it prevents the reshipping or losing of full bottles, which occurs when the same are packed with straw. I
The invention consists of a barrel having a central solid partition, and at each side thereof two perforated partitions, that retain the bottles, in connection with removable heads, which bear on the heads of the bottles, and are secured by a suitable locking device.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a barrel of suitable size, that is provided with a central solid partition, B, at either side of which the bottles are arranged in tiers, eight-.
een being preferably arranged at each side of the partition, as it is customary in the trade to make up packages containing three dozen bottles.
that the bottles may be readily placed into position in the same.
The heads D of the barrel are made detachable, and are locked by being arranged with a projecting pin, a, at one side, that enters a socket, a, of the barrel, and with a socket, b, at a point diametrically opposite thereto, into which a locking screw bolt or latch, d, enters, so as to lock the head rigidly to the barrel. The screw-bolt is inserted or withdrawn from the socket of the head by a key that fits on the outer end of the same, so that only the party holding the key can get access to the barrel. Over the locking-screw a seal may be placed, so that the barrels are fully protected against being tampered with in transit a.
When the barrel is in upright position the bottles in the upper part thereof rest on the central partition, which then supports the same in connection with the perforated partitions, the bottles in the lower half of the barrel resting on the bottom head, so that thereby the weight of the bottles is distributed, and not thrown entirely on one part of the barrel.
The barrel may be easily handled by one man without breakage to the bottles, as each one is supported separately from the remaining ones.
When it is desired to take out the bottles one of the heads is removed, and the bottles of one section of the barrel are first taken out. The barrel is then turned upside down and the opposite head removed, and the bottles taken out from the other half of the barrel.
Any one of the bottles may be taken out with great facility without removing the rest, and the empty bottles replaced conveniently in the same manner, and finally the barrel closed and locked by replacing the heads for return shipment.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A barrel or package for shipping bottled liquors, having a solid central partition, two or more .perforated guide-partitions at each side of the central partition, and detachable for the locking-bolt at the 0 heads with looking devices, substantially as stantially as described. and for the purpose set forth.
pposite side, sub- 2. The combination, with a barrel having a SAMUEL STRAUSS socket-hole at one side and a locking-bolt at Witnesses: the opposite side, of a detachable head, hav- BEN BAER,
ing socket-pin at one side, and a socket-hole JNo. CASTELLO.
