This invention relates to iilter type respirators and comprehends an improved respirator which includes either an inexpensive, but eective, ilter element which may be discarded when uni'lt for .5 further use in lieu of a new element to replace the same, or a washable lter element which may be cleansed and reused., l l
More particularly the invention resides in an s improved respirator of the'indicated character 1,) which includes a substantially cup-shaped cover element of a size to enclose the nostrils and mouth of the wearer and means with which said element is detachably associated for holding the same in applied position and for exerting a pres.-
sure to impinge the marginal portion thereof 4against the face so as to prevent leakage and in-` sure the pasmge therethrough of all of the air inhaled by the wearer. l, With these and other objects in view, the in- '0 vention is set forth in .detail in the following specincation and accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment is disclosed, while the apmnded claims cover variations and modifications falling within the scope of the invention.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference. ill designates a nlter element preferably constructed of sheet material which is` so fash- 33 ioned as to present a cup-shaped structure of a me to enclose the nostrils and mouth of the wearer with the maior portion thereof in spaced relation to the face except at the marginal portion thereof. The material may either be molded a into this shape or, as illustrated, notched at lli with the notched edges Joined. by aline of stitching ii to impart the general cup-shape form thereto. Il' desired, the' marginal portion may be covered with a; strip of air impervious material L; it, such as rubberized fabric which is attached thereto by `stitching I4 to providev a nonirritating covering for contact with the face. l
In order to providel means for holding the lter element in applied position and for exerting at 50 the marginal portion thereof, a pressure to seal the same against the face, a member is utilized which may be of any desired type to perform the intended function. However, as illustrated, the member or holder consists yof a face piece i5 conforming generally to that disclosed in my co- (Cl. 12S-M6) pending application, Serial No. 44,694, led October 12, 1935. The face piece or member i5 is constructed of molded vrubber and conforms generally to the shape of the face in the region of the nose, mouth and chin, and includes a nose cover- 5 ing portion i6 having a lower horizontal wall il provided with a depending tubular boss i8, and further includes a mouth covering portion i9. The rear margin of the face piece is provided in the region ofthe nose and chin with inwardly di- 1o rected angularly disposed flanges 20 and 2l, the free edges of which flanges are respectively contoured to iit over the bridge of the nose and the lower portion of the lower lip, while the rear face of the lower flange 2l is adapted to contact with '15 the chin immediately below the lower lip. The face piece is also formed with cheek flaps 22 adapted for fiat contact with the cheeks of the wearer throughout a substantial area thereof. The cheek apshave attachedthereto the ends 20 of a supporting band 23 for holding the face piece in applied position. VThe face piece in this instance is preferably provided with any number of air passages it in addition to the air passage defined by the tubular boss i8. 25 The filter element iii "is applied to the inner or hollow side of the face piece iiiand suitable means is provided for detachably associating the filter element with the face piece, which means in thelpresent instance is disclosed as strips of adhesive tape 25 which are adhesively` attached to tabs 26 formed at the upper portion of the lter element l!) the protruding ends of the tape strips 2E being adhesively connected with the `exterior of the face piece i5. When the hlter element is thus associated with the face piece or hollow member i5, the respirator is donned and the supporting band 23 causes the marginal portion of the face piece to exert a pressure against the marginal portion of the lter element intoA 4@ impinge the same against ,the face of the wearer so as to seal said filter element at its marginal portion against leakage of air therearcund.
In some instances, the filter element i0 Amay be made of an inexpensive material which may be l discarded when unfit for furtherl use in lieu of a new element to replace the same, while in other instances the filter element may be madev of a material which may be cleansed and reused.
Obviously, when the respirator is in applied 5o position, all of the air breathed by the wearer mustl pass through the filter element so as to separate therefrom any injurious. foreign matter such as dust, dirt or thelike., It will also be apparent that the lter element maybe readily sa changed or renewed by simply detaching the adhesive strips or other equivalent fastening means from the face piece. It will also be observed that due to the cup-shaped configuration of the filter element l0, the major portion 'of the same will be disposed out of contact with the face of the wearer except at the marginal portion and where vsaid marginal portion is provided with a covering strip I3, the wearer is relieved of the irritating nature of certain types of filter elements which are of felt, wool or equivalent materials.
What is claimed is:
1. A lter type respirator including a lter element adapted to enclose the nostrils and mouth of the wearer and fashioned so as to be disposed in spaced relation to the face except at the marginal portion thereof, a member having air passages therethrough, said member overlying and detachably associated with the central portion of the filter element with the marginal portion of the filter element extending therebeyond, and means connected to said member for holding the same in applied position and for exerting pressure to impinge the filter element against the -face of the wearer adjacent the marginal portion of said nlter element.
2. A filter type respirator including a filter element adapted to enclose the nostrils and mouth of the wearer and fashioned so as to be disposed in spaced relation to the face except at the marginal portion thereof, a strip of air impervious material secured to and extending around the marginal portion thereof and a member having airpassages therethrough and with whlch/ said element is detachably associated to constitute means for holding the same in applied position and for exerting a pressure to impinge the covered marginal portion against the face of the wearer.`
3. A filter type respirator including a substantially cup-shaped filter element adapted to enclose the nostrils and mouth of the wearer. a member for holding the lter element in applied position and for exerting at the marginal portion of said element a pressure -to seal the same against the face of the wearer, means for detachably associating the filter element with the member, said means comprising adhesive strips on the filter element having extending portio adhesively attached to the member.
