F. J. de MORAMBERT. (lamp Bed.
N0. 207,060. Patented Aug. 13,1878.
UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
FELIX J. DE MORAMBERT, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
.IMPROVEMENT IN CAMP-BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,060, dated August 13, 1878;. application filed July 9, 1878..
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX JULLIEN DE Mo- RAMBERT, of Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to construct a cheap, strong, and compact portable bed; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame of my improved portable bed as it appears when set up for use, but without the textile strip which forms the support for the occupant of the bed; Figs. 2 and 3, perspective views, respectively, of one of the side frames and one of the supporting-frames as they appear when folded; Fig. 4, a transverse section of the bed, andFig. 5 a detached view of one of the connecting-blocks of the frame.
In the present instance, each of the side frames of the bed consists of three rods or bars, A, A and A the inner ends of the rods A A being connected to the opposite ends of the central rod A by means of metal blocks 3, each of which has cars a, between which the ends of the rods fit, and to which they are pivoted by pins b, as shown in Fig. 5.
In each of the blocks B is formed a socket adapted for the reception of the upper end of an arm, d, the lower end of which fits between and is pivoted to arms a 011 plates D, other arms, 0, on which are secured to the end of a strip, E, while to arms a on the plates D are pivoted the upper ends of downwardly-projecting arms f. (See Fig. 4.)
It will thus be seen that the strip E, carrying at each end the pivoted arms (I and f, forms a frame for supporting the side frames of the bed at thosepoints where the rods composing said side frames are connected together, the arms 61 supporting the coupling-blocks B, and the arms f supporting the strips E, the lower ends of the said arms f resting upon the floor.
The arms d have double inclinedlower ends, so that when the said arms d are extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, one of these inclined faces rests against the end of the strip E, while the other forms an abutment for the upper end of the arm f, the two arms dand f being thereby firmly braced and retained in position.
The outer ends of the rods A of the side frames are also provided with three-armed plates D, to which are hung arms 0 and f, similar to those of the strips E, the'arms f serving to support the head of the bed, while the upwardly-inclined arms at serve to hold the textile covering of the bed at such an angle as to form a pillow or pillowrest. The outer ends of these arms d are slotted forthe reception of pins on the ends of a rod, g, which, with a similar rod, g, at the ends of the rods A of the side frames, serves to keep the ends of said side frames in the proper lateral p'osition with respect to each other.
To the ends of the rods A of the side frames are pivoted strips 4', forming feet for the support of the foot of the bed, these strips 0' carrying plates, which, by contact with the rods A act as stops to govern the angle as sumed by the said strips when the latter are depressed.
- When the bed is to be folded up the end rods 1 and g and the supporting-frames at the joints are removed, the arms cl and f of the rods A folded down onto said rods, the strips folded down onto the rods A and the rods A and A then folded over the central rods A, as shown in Fig. 2. The arms (I and f of each strip E are then folded down onto said strip, as shown in Fig. 3, the strips E and rods 9 and g laid in line with the rods A, A and A thus forming a compact and conveniently-carried bundle.
It should be understood that the frame, as shown in Fig. 1, is combined with a strip of textile fabric, which forms the support for the occupant of the bed, this strip having at each end a loop, to which is adapted the rod 9 or g, and at each side three loops, into which fit the three bars A, A and A? of the side frames. Then the frame is folded up this textile strip serves as a cover for the same.
By adapting the arms cl on the supportingframes to the sockets in the connecting-blocks 13, the side frames of the bed are supported and braced at those points where such sup= 7 port is most needed, so that I am enabled to 3. The combination of the strips E or rods A and the three-armed plates D with the pivoted arm f and the pivoted arm (I, having a double inclined end, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FELIX J ULLIEN DE MORAMBERT.
