EXERCI S ING APPARATUS Filed July 1, 1936 INVEIYTOR.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in that type of gymnasia apparatus, known as punching bags used in pugilistic practice.
It is well known that such punching bags must be in themselves elastic to avoid damage to the user and also must be resiliently mounted to rebound into normal position quite irrespective of the direction from which the blow may be delivered, and this without appreciable loss of time.
Having these matters in mind it is an' object of the present invention to provide a bag having the foregoing attributes and so mounted as to respond to any kind of a blow, direct or slantingly given, slowly or speedily, and with varying force.
A further feature is in the provision of a support susceptible 'of being removably secured, in any desired location, to a floor or like foundation, or, if desired, directly to the ground, thereby providing for out-of-door exercise and entertainment.
Another purpose is to produce a punching bag mount comprised of few and simple parts readily assembled and not easily becoming disordered.
These several objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, parts being in section of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the lower part of the apparatus as arranged for field or out-door service.
The bag In is herein shown to be of the usual pear shaped variety, consisting of anouter shell of leather, rubber or like semi-elastic material, having a slit 1 I provided with lacing and through which an inner, inflatable bag may be entered and charged with air to the desired pressure.
Rigidly secured to the downwardly extending stem portion of the bag is a metallic cap l2 hav- 2! having an acute point ing a screw threaded projection l3 engaged in a corresponding opening in the neck M of a sleeve IS.
The sleeve is closely encircled by several coils of an open wound helical spring l6 having its upper extremity firmly secured to the neck l4, while the lower end of the spring is coiled around the reduced portion 11 of a hollow post l8, set axially in an annular, stepped flange l9, as seen in Figure 1, and may be secured in position by screws 20 to a suitable foundation.
In the modified form, shown in Figure 2, the post I8 is depicted as being integral with the flange l9, and extending there-below is a shank 22 adapted to be driven into the ground as plainly indicated, until the flange or pedestal [9' becomes seated on the earth.
Obviously the heighth of the bag may be anything desired and the proportions of the several elements made suitable for the service they are to perform.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as illustrative and suggestive rather than limitative of the invention in its broadest aspect and is restricted only by the scope of the claim hereto appended.
Having thus described the invention and set forth the manner of its construction and use, what is claimed as new and sought to be secured by Letters Patent, is:-
A punching bag having a screw threaded rigid stem, a sleeve engaged on said stem, said sleeve having a reduced upper portion adjacent said bag, an open wound helical spring encircling said sleeve and fixed at its upper end to said upper portion of the sleeve, a stepped circular pedestal having an axial pendant integral shank adapted to be driven into the ground, said shank being round and acutely pointed, and including an upwardly extending post provided with a reduced upper portion to receive the opposite end of said spring and be secured therewithin.
HENRY ZINNOW.
