5 Claims.
This invention relates toimprovements in supports and cover operating means for garbage cans and similar receptacles.
In the disposal of garbage from homes and 6 apartment houses, the garbage is put into cans and the like that, are placed adjacent the alley or street where it is collected at regular intervals by collectors employed by the city'forthis purpose.
10 Since garbage cans contain food of different kinds, they naturally attract flies and, if they are not properly covered, they become regular breeding places for flies, or at least serve as hosts for swarms of them. Uncovered and improperly 15 coveredgarbage cans also serve as feeding places for cats, dogs and rats, and are unsanitary and disease-breeding.
It is universally recognized that garbage cans must be properly covered, but experience has shown that garbage can covers are short-lived, and they soon become bent, broken or stolen, or the cans capsized and the contents spilled. An inspection of any city will show that" the great majority of garbage cans are either'entirely uncovered orelse improperly covered.
Owing to the'lack of planning on the part of the'builders or owners, there .is seldom provided convenient supports for the garbage cans, and as a result, the collector's work is greatly increased and their treatment of the cans is not as consideratev as it would be if they were conveniently located. v
It is the object of this invention to produce a support for garbage cans, that can be positioned in a gap in the back fence, and which will support a garbage can so that it will be conveniently accessible from the inside of the fence for depositing'garbage therein, and which will be equally accessible to the garbage collector for removing the can therefrom while emptying it.
Another object is to produce a device of the 'kind under consideration that shall carry a suitable cover and which shall be provided with means for raising the cover when the can is to be removed, and for lowering it onto the can when the latter is replaced.
Another object of thisinvention is to produce a cover that shall be provided with an opening, which in turn has a cover for closing it, and which 50 is employed when placing garbage into the can.
A further object is to provide means, operable from the outside of theyard and accessible to the garbage collector for raising the cover and for holding it in raised position while the can is 5 being emptied, and which will automatically reshown in Figures 1 and 2; 7
lease and lower the cover onto the can when the latter is replaced.
A still further object is to provide a support, of the kind pointed out, that shall be so constructed that the parts can be locked whenever desired, so as to prevent removal of the can or contents by persons bent on theft or mischief.
The above and any other objects that may appear as this description proceeds, are attained by means of a construction and an arrangement of parts that will now be described in detail, and for this purpose reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which the preferred embodiment has been shown, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, looking in the direction of arrow l in Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a front elevation, looking in the direction of arrow 2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the assembly Figure 4 is a view, similar to the one shown'in Figure 1, with a small portion broken away, and shows the cover in raised position, and the can partly removed;
, Figure 5 is a side elevation, corresponding to that shown in Figure 1, and illustrates a specifically different mechanism for raising and lowering the cover;
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the assembly shown in Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is a transverse section through the cover and the upper end of the can.
In the drawings reference numeral l0 designates the twoparallel, spaced sideangle iron members of the supporting frame. Secured at their lower ends to the vertical flanges of the angle irons H] are four corner posts II that are also formed from angle iron. The side shown in elevation in Figure 2 will be referred to as the front side, so as to facilitate the description.
The two corner posts at the back of the frame are connected by two angle iron members 12 and I3, and by a flat bar [4. The two corner posts at the front of the frame are connected by a flat ,fianges bent outwardly as indicated by reference numeral l8, and secured to the corner posts. The inwardly extending or horizontal flanges of the angle irons ll serve as supports for the garbage 5 can l9. Flat bars 23 extend from the angle iron l3 to the bar [5 in the space between the supporting angles H.
A bar 2| extends between the vertical flanges of the angle irons l0, and has its end secured. by brackets or bent ends 22. Two short pieces of angle iron, 23 and 24, are secured to the bar 2|. A lever comprising the two bars 25 is fulcrumed on the pivot 23 at the tops of members 23 and 24. The front ends of bars 25 are connected by a pedal 27, and the rear ends carry a transverse bar 28 to the outer ends of which the links 29 are pivoted. Rods 30 have their lower ends pivoted to the lower ends of the links 29, and pass through openings in the guides 3| and the horizontal flanges of the angle irons I6. I
A flanged cover 32 is attached to the upper ends of the rods 30 in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2. Normally, the cover rests on the top of the can, but when sufficient pressure is applied to the pedal 21, the cover is raised to the position shown in Figure 4.
When the cover is elevated to the position shown in Figure 4:, and the can moved outwardly a short distance, a latch becomes effective to hold it in this position until released by the movement of the can to normal position. The latch comprises a straight bar 33 that has its lower end pivoted on the bar 34. The upper end of this bar 33 has a notch 35 in which the rod 28 engages when it is elevated to the position shown in Figure 4.
An arm 36 extends rearwardly from the bar 33 near its upper end, and is provided with an upturned end 37 that projects between the guide bars 36a to a point above the bottom of the can and is engaged by the latter when in normal position, (Figure 1), and when in this position, the
.latch is held in inoperative position. When the to can is pulled out (Figure 4), the latch member is free to engage the rod 28. After the can has been emptied and is returned to its normal position, the latch is moved into inoperative position, and the cover is then free to move down to its normal position on the can.
A perforated lug 38 is secured to the bar 39 in position for receiving the hasp of a padlock 43 that also encircles one of the levers 25. When the lock is in place, the cover cannot be raised, and the can and cover are thus locked .to the support and secured against removal by mischievous boys or thieves.
In Figure '7 a section has been shown through the cover and through the top of the can, and from this it will be seen that besides the usual flange that surrounds the can, the cover has a central opening surrounded by a flange 4|. A cover 42 is connected with the cover 32 by a hinge 43, and has a handle 44 by means of which it can be tilted. The garbage is deposited in the can through the opening under cover 42.
In Figures 5 and 6, a modified form of cover operating means has been shown which takes the place of the pedal operated device described above. The modified cover operating device consists of a bail 45 that is pivoted to the lugs 46, which are carried by the angle irons [6a. Short connecting rods or links 41 have their upper ends pivoted to the bail at points 48, and their lower ends pivoted to the rods 30. When the bail is in the position shown in full lines in Figures 5 and 6, the cover is in operative position, but when it is turned to the dotted line position, the cover is also raised to dotted line position.
The lower ends of rods 30 are provided with heads 49 that are so located with respect to the lugs 31 that they will engage the under sides of the lugs after the bail has been raised from the full line to the dotted line position shown in Figure 5. After the bail has been operated to raise the cover, the parts will remain in raised position until the bail is manually returned.
A perforated lug 38a is fastened to the angle iron [6a, and a padlock can be attached to the lug and surround the bail in the manner shown.
The can has a handle 53 by means of which it can be pulled outwardly and returned. In Figure 3, the fence between the lot and the alley has been shown and designated by numeral 5|, and it will be seen that the supporting frame occupies a position in a gap in the fence, the pedal being on the outside "so that the garbage collector can remove and replace the can without entering into the yard, and the owner can empty the garbage without leaving the yard.
The base of the frame is apertured at 52 to permit the frame being anchored by bolts or the like to a concrete foundation. The frame can also be held against unauthorized removal by the use of bolts or the like, inserted through apertures 53 for attachment to the fence.
0n Halloween and when the house is vacant, the cover can be locked in position, and assurance thus had that the frame, can or cover will not be removed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the support and can which form the subject of this invention, are so constructed that they are convenient for both the owner and garbage collector,
and that whenever desirable, the parts can be locked against removal.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
