-N. sWENsoN 2,111,876 TOOTH BRUSH March 22, 1938.
Filed March 9', 1937 I [nveniof iii 92% ill/67250 Attorneys Patented Mar. 22, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to tooth brushes and has for its principal object to provide a plurality of relatively movable brush heads mounted on the handle of the brush and means connecting the brush heads with the handle-to impart a vertical movement to the brushes during the horizontal reciprocating movement of the brush handle across the teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of this character of simple and practical construction, efiicient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming parts hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the brush constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the brushes in closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the brushes in open position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a brush handle which includes a head 6 having a pair of slotted openings I therein extending longitudinally of the handle and including an intermediate arcuate portion 8, said arcuate portion of the respective slotted openings being oppositely curved as will be clearly apparent from an inspection of Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing. The end portions of the slotted openings are disposed in parallelism as indicated at 9.
A pair of brushes Ill-l0 are provided and include a backing portion ll having headed upstanding pins I2 intermediate their ends and inserted through the slotted openings 1 of the handle head 6, the shank portions of the pins being movable longitudinally in said slotted openings. 5 It will be apparent from the foregoing that during the longitudinal movement of the brush handle the pins [2 will slide along the slotted openings 8 and by reason of the curvature of said slotted openings the brushes will be caused to 10 move relative toeach other. Accordingly, during the horizontal reciprocating movement of the brush across the teeth a vertical movement of the brushes will also be produced at the same time.
It is believed the details of construction and operation of the invention will be readily appreciated from the foregoing without further detail explanation thereof.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is:-
1. A brush comprising a handle having a pair of slotted openings adjacent one end thereof, said slotted openings including intermediate oppositely curved portions, a pair of brushes and pins projecting from said brushes and engaged in said slotted openings to produce relative movement of the brushes upon a reciprocating movement of the handle.
2. A brush comprising a handle having a pair of slotted openings extending longitudinally thereof adjacent one end of the handle, each of said slotted openings including an arcuate intermediate portion curved toward each other and parallel end portions, a pair of brushes extending longitudinally with respect to the handle and headed pins projecting from the backs of the brushes and engaged in said slotted openings to produce relative movement between the brushes upon a longitudinal movement of the handle.
