Description

Sept. 13, 1938. .1. M. WALLAQE DISPENSING GUN Filed March 15,
Patented Sept. 13, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFiCE Application March 15,
'1937. Serial No. 131,045
In Canada March 19, 1936 2 Claims.
It has been proposed to treat the inside of inher tubes of pneumatic tires with a semi-plastic or viscous material having the character of maintaining said condition and tending to seal the tube against air leaks due to the rubber becoming porous or through punctures.
It is important that the tubes be supplied with the treating material in properly measured quantities, and it is the object of my invention to de- 0 vise apparatus for positively and accurately dis pensing the material to the tubes, and particularly to devise apparatus which may be operated by air pressure from air supply systems such as used for blowing up tires.
tions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the apparatus;
Fig. 2 an end elevation of the same; and
Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
In the drawing like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the difierent figures.
l is a cylindrical casing or body having a head 2 at one end and a bottom 3 at the other end. Slidable within the body is a plunger 4, the rod 5 of which extends through a hole in the head 2 and is provided with a cross bar 6 or other suitable hand grip. A boss 1 is formed on the head surrounding the hole for the plunger rod, which boss is formed with an internal seat to receive packing 8, which may be compressed by means of a nut 9 threaded on the boss.
The plunger 4 comprises a pair of metal plates l0 and H between which is clamped a disk I2 of rubber or other suitable material. The parts of the plunger are held together by screws or bolts l3. One of the plates, preferably the upper one I D, is formed with an annular rib II] to position the disk I2.
Interposed between the end of the body and the bottom is a Washer or disk M of suitable packing material, to prevent leakage.
The top 2 is formed at opposite sides with pairs of lugs l5 between which are pivoted rods IS, the free ends of which are threaded and are received between corresponding pairs of lugs I! on the bottom 3. Wing or thumb nuts it are provided on the rods I6 which may be screwed up against the lugs I! to hold the bottom in place.
The bottom 3 is provided with an outlet ill to which is connected one end of a hose 20, the other end of which is provided with a suitable nozzle 26 adapted to be fitted to a tire tube valve.
As it is desired, as stated in the preamble of the specification to utilize air pressure to operate the plunger, I provide in the head 2 an air inlet 2| to which may be connected a compressed air supply such as used for inflating tires.
I attain my object by means of the construo' In the plunger 4 is formed a passage 22, which is controlled by a valve 23, normally held in closed position by a spring 24 secured to the plunger. The stem 25 of the valve extends through the passage 22 and extends a distance below the lower side of the plunger for a purpose which will hereafter appear.
The device is used as follows. The plunger is moved to its upper position, the bottom 4 removed, and a measured quantity of the treating material placed in the body. The bottom 4 is then replaced, and the nozzle 26 secured to the valve of the tube to be treated. The air supply connection is then connected with the inlet 2| and upon the air entering above the plunger, the latter is moved in the body to expel the treating material. As the plunger reaches the bottom of the body, the stem 25 of the valve engages the bottom 4 thus unseating the valve, thus relieving air pressure in the body and helping to expel any treating material left in the hose.
The same procedure will take place for each tire tube to be treated.
From the above description, it will be seen that I have devised a dispensing gun which will permit the operation of its plunger by air pressure and provided with convenient means for relieving air pressure and clearing the connections when the contents have been emptied from the body.
While the gun has been devised primarily for inserting treating material in pneumatic tire tubes, it will be apparent that it may be used for Various other purposes.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. Ina dispensing gun, the combination of a hollow body having an air inlet in one end and a discharge outlet in its other end; a plunger movable in said body; a pull rod connected with the plunger centrally thereof and extending through the other end of the body, said plunger having an air passage therethrough; a normally seated valve controlling said passage; a stem on said valve extending through said passage and of a length to engage the end of the body to unseat the valve just as the plunger reaches the end of its stroke.
2. In a dispensing gun, the combination of a hollow body having an air inlet in one end and a discharge outlet in its other end; a plunger movable in said body; a pull rod connected with the plunger centrally thereof and extending through the other end of the body, said plunger having an air passage therethrough; a valve controlling said passage, spring means normally tending to hold said valve seated; a stem on said valve extending through said passage and of a length to engage the end of the body to unseat the valve just as the plunger reaches the end of its stroke.
