1 Claim.

(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in gasket materials, and more particularly to improvements to be used in doors, hatches and miscellaneous openings on ship- 5 board so as to form with the closure a watertight, gas-tight and flame-tight joint.

An important object of my invention is to provide such a flame resisting gasket that is durable, simple in construction, quickly removable for replacement purposes and suitable for all types and shapes of doors, hatches, manholes and other openings for access between compartments. Y

Another object of my invention is to provide such a flame resisting gasket that may be used to provide the necessaryr protection around openings, which must in certain instances, be quickly opened or closed with the minimum effort as far as operation of dogs, holding down bolts, or other securing devices are concerned.

In the attainment of my invention I employ a central core of resilient material, such as rubber, with an outer covering of ilame resistant material, such as asbestos-metallic cloth.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numbers are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a section of my invention with the llame-proof cover partially secured around the core;

Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a piece of the assembled gasket material, and

Fig. 3 is a view showing a preferred method of assembling a strand of the covering materials warp or Woof, or filling.

The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of 20 the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.

Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is: 5

A resilient, flame-resistant gasket material comprising a central rectangular core of vulcanized rubber and a wrapping of at least one ply of asbestos-metallic cloth having its warp and Woof each made up of one strand of a metal 30 chosen from the group, brass and copper, and at least two strands of asbestos yarn intertwisted, the edge yof said cloth being tapered to a wedge to make the gasket surface smooth and regular.
