IMPROVEMENT lN INSECT-DESTROYER S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,679., dated June 17, 1879; application filed March 24, 1879.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY HULL, of Montello, in the county of Marquette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Insect-Destroyers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is particularly intended for use in applying liquid to potato-vines for the purpose of destroying the insect known as the Colorado beetle or potato-bug, but it is also applicable to other similar purposes.
The invention consists in a novel construction of a syringe and reservoir combined and used in connection therewith, whereby provision is made for carrying a quantity of liquid for the supply of the syringe and constantly feeding it thereto, and for insuring the proper operation of the syringe in discharging the liquid.
The accompanying drawing represents a central longitudinal sectional view of an apparatus constructed according to my inven- 'tion.
The syringe consists of a tube, A, provided at one end with a fine rose, B, and a piston or plunger, G, having its rod D provided with a handle, d. The rod passes through a cap, 0,
which fits on the upper end of the tube A.
with a hopper or funnel, f it may be supplied with the liquid to be applied to the plants.
The tube A communicates with the reservoir G by means of perforations h in said tube near the point where it passes through the lower end of the reservoir.
If desired, the apparatus may be provided with a strap passed through a 1001),}, attached to the reservoir, and thus may be carried with more ease, especially when made large and heavy.
The apparatus thus constructed may be used for applying paris-green or any other suitable substance which may be dissolved ill-OI mixed with water or other liquid.
The operation is as follows: When the piston or plunger is drawn up, the liquid flows through the perforations h into the tube A, and when the piston is pushed in the liquid is expelled through the rose B in the form of spray, which spreads completely over the vines and destroys the insects thereon. f
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent The combination, with reservoir G, of the central tube, A, extending through reser voir, having rose B at lower end, connecting by perforations with the reservoir, and provided with a piston that works down to the rose, as shown and described, whereby the fluid is forced downwardly and directly upon the plants, notwithstanding the wind, all valves are dispensed with, and the danger of clogging the rose with the paris-green is entirely prevented.
GEORGE HENRY HULL.
