This invention relates to fasteners and is particularly adapted fory a device which is intended to be used as a fastener for the blankets of infants beds.
5 The primary object of the invention is to provide a device whereby blankets may be securely fastened to the mattress of .a bed in an easy and convenient manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide l such a device which cannot easily become -accidentally detached from its fastening position, and a further object is to provide a fastener, of the character `to be hereinafter described, which cannot cause injury.
V Further objects and advantages-v of my invention will be apparent from the following description and from the drawing inwhich:

Figure 3 is a view of the said fastener partly in section and showing one applicationy in the use thereof.
As illustrated in the drawing, my improved fastener consists of a helical, or screw shaped, wire pinv 5 having a sharp point 6. The said pin is fastened, in any suitable manner, to a shaft l which is provided with a knob 8 at the top thereof and a clamping disc, or plate 9, is mounted on said shaft adjacent to the top of the pin 5. The said shaft is slidably` mounted in a guard cap l!) and extends through an opening in the top theren of which is surrounded by a flange l I, for guiding said shaft longitudinally to the axis of said guard, and the bottom of the guard is provided with an outwardly extending flange l2. A compression spring i3 is mounted between u the top of said guard and said knob Sand fits into a recess 8-a in the bottom of the knob. The said spring operates to force the guard l0 over the pin 5 so as to retract the same, into the position illustrated in Figure 1, and thereby shield the pin 45 point 6 against accidental contact therewith.
My improved fastener may be used, as illus'- trated in Figure 3, in which, the numeral M denotes the mattress ofa bed, I5 a sheet covering the said mattress and I5 denotes the blankets of 5,0 the bed. W hen so used, the fastener is first placed upon the top of the blankets l5 while it is in the normal condition illustrated in Figure 1.` The knob 8 is then forced downwardly and turned in a clockwise direction. This causes the point 6 to 55 pierce through the blankets and the sheet, and
thread itself into the mattress i4 .as clearly illustrated.
, When the said pin has been threaded into the mattress to its full extent, the clamping disc 9 will come into contact with the top of the blankets and clamp them firmly against the mattress. The guard I0 will be forced downwardly with the iiange I2 surrounding the saidclamping disc and thereby serve to additionally clamp the blankets; thus securely fastening them i" against displacement upon the mattress.'
Should the fastener become accidentally disengaged fromits fastening position, such as by a child inthe bed tampering with the fastener or accidentally disengaging it while asleep, the pin 5 5 would be retracted, by means of the spring i3, into the guard lllk and the point 6 will be shielded thereby. Thus, any possibilityof the child coming into contact with thel sharp point, Will be eliminatedso that he cannot be injured thereby. '20 n The said point will, likewise, become shielded by retracting into the guard lli, when the fastener f is normally .detached from its fastening position.
It willv be understood from the` above descrip- 25 tion, that while Iv have described myv improved fastener particularly as intended for fastening yblankets to a mattress, my invention may also be applied, without departing from the scope of the appended claims, wherever it is desired to provide v guard adapted to receive said pin and slidably mounted on said shaft, and means comprising a spring between and in contact with said handle and guard for moving saidguard into position to shield said pin thereon against accidental contact therewith.

A fastener comprising a spiral pin having a sharp point,I a stem comprising a shaft for 45 carrying said pin, a handle on said shaft, a clamping plate secured to the said shaft and on a plane below the top of said pin, a lguard slidably mounted4 on said shaft and adapted to cover said pin and clamping plate and to contain thesaid point against accidental contacty therewith and l means comprising a spring on' said shaft for forc- -ing said guard into operative position relative to prising a spiral wire pin having a sharp point thereon and mounted to the end of a stem, a clamping plate disposed below the top of said pin, a knob or handle mounted upon the end of said stern, a guard slidably mounted on said shaft and having a wall surrounding said pin, and spring means between the top of said guard and the bottom of said knob for retaining said guard in position to contain said pin therein and shield said point against accidental contact therewith and to force said guard into contact with the surface of a member to be fastened by said fastener when the said pin is imbedded therein.
4. A fastener of the character described comprising a stem, a pin projecting from the end of said stem, a clamping member mounted to said stem, a guard slidabie on said stem and adapted to overlie said member and pin, a knob on the end of said stem having a recess therein, and a spring fitting within said recess and against -said guard for normally retaining said guard in prising a stem'having a pin extending therefrom,
a guard slidably mounted on said stem having a .collar surrounding the stem, a spring surrounding said stem and collar for retaining said guard in operative position to prevent accidental contact with the end of saidipin, and a handle on said stem having a recess in the bottom thereof adapted to receive the said spring and collar.
