2 Claims.

This invention relates to an improved sandal adapted to be worn in connection with a shoe and it is one object of the invention to provide a sandal so constructed that it may be applied against the sole and heel of a shoe and firmly held in place to serve as means for protecting the shoe from wet or greasy floors.

Another object of the invention is to provide a sandal formed of rubber and fabric vulcanized 10 together to form a strong fabricated rubber sandal capable of withstanding wear and not liable to quickly wear out.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pliable fabricated rubber sandal having 15 its under surface formed with grooves extending longitudinally and transversely thereof and serving to produce an anti-skid surface which will prevent slipping when the sandal is worn.

Still another object of the invention is to proconsisting of tongues formed integral with the sandal in position to be swung upwardly into engagement with toe and heel portions of a shoe and secured by straps having adjustable engage- 25 ment with the tongues.

A further object of the invention is to so form the securing means for the rear portion of the sandal that the strap thereof may be secured about a person's ankle and the sandal held firmly in engagement with the heel of the shoe.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a sandal of substantially a one-piece construction formed of laminated rubber and fabric vulcanized together to produce a flexible and 35 very tough sandal.

And the invention has as a still further object to provide a sandal which is simple in construction and very easy to apply or remove.

The invention is illustrated in the accompany- 40 ing drawing,.wherein:

This improved sandal is intended as an auxiliary foot covering and is to be worn in covering relation to the sole and heel of a shoe to hold the shoe out of contact with a wet or greasy floor and prevent a person from slipping. sists of rubber reinforced by sheets of fabric and vulcanized to form a tough but-pliable laminated structure which is water proof and serves very effectively to prevent water and oil from reaching the shoes when worn by a person whose workrequires walking on wet or greasy floors. The under surface of the sandal is formed with a plurality of. grooves 2 and 3 which extend longitudinally and transversely of the body, thus providing the sandal with a tread surface which will prevent slipping as it is of an anti-skid formation.

The upper ply or layer 4 of the body I is formed with integral extensions which are of rubber reinforced by fabric and constitutes a front-flap or tongue 5, a rear tongue or fiapii at the back of the heel portion of the sandal, side tongues or flaps I at opposite sides of the heel portion, and straps 8 and 9 at opposite sides of the forward portion of the sandal. The front flap. 5 has its attached end portion formed with a longitudinally extending slot H) to impart greater flexibility to the fiap and permit it to fit in snug engagement with the toe portion of a shoe when it is turned upwardly and rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. '1, and the free end portion of this flap is widened to provide an enlarged end portion ll formed with slots I! to receive the straps 8 and 9. The strap 8, which is shorter 7 than the strap 9, is passed through one slot I2 and carries a buckle l3 which prevents this strap from slipping out of the slot, and the strap 9, after being passed through the other slot I2, is adjustably engaged with the buckle to hold the front flap in place upon the toe portion of a shoe and prevent the front, portion of the sandal from shifting transversely out of its proper position.

After the toe portion of the shoe has been thrust under the front flap and the strap 9 threaded through the adjacent slot l2 and engaged with the buckle I 3, the rear flap '6 and the flaps 'I/at opposite sides of the heel portion of the sandal are folded upwardly and secured by the strap l4 which is also formed of vul- 5 eanized rubber reinforced by fabric. This strap i4 is threaded through the slots l5 and. I6

formed in the flaps 6 and I and after its end movement and prevent the flaps from being subjected to tearing strain, there has been provided a metal plate I8 which is secured by rivets l9 and is provided with an upstanding lip or flange for overlapping the rear portion of the heel of a shoe and to very effectively prevent the sandal from shifting forwardly relative to the shoe. When the sandal is applied and the straps tightened, it will be firmly held in place and prevented from shifting longitudinally or transversely out of its proper position and, when it is desired to remove the sandal, it is merely necessary to release the straps 9 and I4 from the buckles l3 and i1 and the sandal may be easily detached from a shoe.

As the body of the sandal is formed of vulcanized rubber reinforced with sheets of fabric, it will be tough enough to withstand wear caused when walking on cement floors and. at the same time, of such flexibility that it will not interfere with proper flexing of the sole of a shoe when walking. As the flaps and straps are flexible as Well as the body of the sandal, the sandal may be flattened and occupy but a small space when put away in a drawer or a pair of sandals may be rolled into a compact mass and tied as a bundle.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

l. A sandal comprising a sole of tough pliable material, front and rear tongues of tough pliable material formed integral with said sole, the front tongue having its attached end portion formed with a longitudinally extending slot imparting increased flexibility to the tongue, the free end portion of the front tongue being widened to provide an enlarged end portion, the enlarged end portion of the front tongue being formed with longitudinally extending transversely spaced slots, means for releasably holding the rear tongues in a raised position to secure the rear portion of the sandal in place against the heel of a shoe, and straps formed integral with the forward portion of the sole and extending from opposite side edges thereof in spaced relation to the front end of the sole, said straps being threaded through the slots in the enlarged end portion of the front tongue and one carrying a buckle at its outer free end for engagement by the other strap.

2. A sandal comprising a sole, front and rear tongues carried by said sole and adapted to be folded into position for engaging toe and heel portions of a shoe when the sole is disposed against the sole and heel of a shoe, the front tongue having its attached end portion formed with a longitudinally extending slot and its free end portion widened and formed with longitudinally extending slots spaced from each other transversely thereof, means for securing the rear straps in a raised position against heel portions of a shoe, and straps carried by the forward portion at opposite sides thereof, the last mentioned straps being threaded through the slots in the free end portion of the front tongue and carrying a buckle.
