The present invention relates to bed pad of a type adapted for resting on or for recessing in the surface of a mattress and designed primarily for use by bed ridden patients and embodies the 5 provision of a receptacle for the reception of the body excretions and having drainage means for discharging the same into a suitable vessel without requiring the services of an attendant.

One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide an elimination bed pad 01' this character in which the receptacle provided for receiving the excretion is formed of semirigid rubber adapted to yield sufiiciently to the weight of the person so as to eliminate any discomfort while the person is lying on the pad and also embodying an extension adapted to fit against the back of the person in the region of the base of the spine to prevent any part of the excretions from running along the back of the person.

It is a further important object of the present invention to provide a pad of this character embodying a receptacle of the character above set forth and provided with relatively flat side 25 portions extending outwardly from each side 'of the receptacle to underlie the buttocks of the patient, said side portions of the pad being constructed of sponge rubber, or similar cellular material to provide ventilating means for that portion of the patient resting thereon, whereby to eliminate perspiration.

It is a still further object of the present invention to provide an article of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efii- 35 cient in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, which possesses a high degree of comfort while in use and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended. v o Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like'parts throughout and in which:- L,

Figure 4 is a rear end elevational view. Referring now to the drawing in detail the numeral 5 designates the pad generally which is of substantially fiat rounded form and having a fiat front edge 6. In the upper surface of the central portion of the pad is formed a substantially oval shaped recess 1 constituting a receptacle having relatively thin side walls 8 and provided adjacent its rear end with a drain opening 5 9 communicating with a drain tube It for.discharging the contents of the receptacle into a suitable vessel.

The receptacle is formed'of a semi-rigid rubber and molded integrally with the front'edge 10 of the receptacle is a semi-rigid rubber fiat apron or shield II which forms the front end portion of the pad.

Projecting from the rear end of the receptacle is an extension l2 provided on its upper sur-- face with a longitudinally extending rib l3 having inclined side edges M. In the underside of the pad immediately beneath the rib l3 and the sides I4 is a recess I 5 to provide an air space beneath the rib for a purpose to be presently described.

Outwardly of the side wall 8 of the receptacle is secured a pair of sponge rubber segments I6, or similar cellular material, the outer surfaces of the walls 8 of the receptacle being undercut as shown at IT and the abutting edges of the sponge rubber segments I 6 conformably fitting thereagainst and being vulcanized, cemented or otherwise permanently secured thereto.

In placing the device in use the pad is placed. on the surface of a mattress with the drain tube It] extending therethrough or, as shown by the dotted lines 18 in Fig. 3, the pad may be recessed in a rubber mattress so that the upper surface of the'pad lies substantially flush with the upper surface of the mattress. The apron ll extends under the legs of the patient while the sponge rubber segments I6 underlie the buttocks and the upwardly arranged extension l2 extends under the back in the region of the base '40 of the spine and conformably fits thereagainst. Excretions from the body of the patient may accordingly be discharged into the receptacle] and drained into a vessel positioned beneath the Fed. The sponge rubber sections l6 permit the circulation of air under the buttocks to eliminate perspiration and other discomforts to the patient.

What, is claimed is:

1. A bed pad ofsubstantially flat form and including a central portion of semi-rigid rubber, a shallow open receptacle in the upper surface of said central portion having a drain tube leading therefrom, the sides of the pad outwardly of the receptacle being formed of cellular rubber ma- 55 terial adapted to provide ventilation for the portion of a persons body resting thereon.

2. A bed pad of substantially fiat form and including a central portion of semi-rigid rubber, a shallow, open receptacle in the upper surface of said central portion having a drain tube leading therefrom, and sections of sponge rubber extending substantially around the marginal edges of the receptacle and forming a ventilated supporting surface for the buttocks of a person lying on the pad.

A bed pad'of substantially fiat form and including a central portion of semi-rigid rubber, a shallow, open receptacle in the upper surface of said central portion having a drain tube leading therefrom, said receptacle being adapted to receive excretions from the body of a person lying on the pad, an extension at one side of the receptacle having an upstanding rib adapted to conformably seat against the persons back in the region of the base of the spine and sponge rubber sections at the side of the receptacle and forming a ventilated supporting surface for the buttocks of the person.

A bed pad of substantially fiat form and including a central portion of semi-rigid rubber, a shallow Open receptacle in the upper surface of said central portion having a drain tube leading therefrom, said receptacle being adapted to receive excretions from the body of a person lying on the pad, an extension at one side of the receptacle having an upstanding rib adapted to conformably seat against the persons back in the region of the base of the spine, a recess in the underside of the pad immediately beneath said rib providingan air chamber adapted to yield under pressure of the body resting thereon and sponge rubber sections at each side of the receptacle and forming a ventilated supporting v surface for the buttocks of the person.

A bed pad of substantially fiat form and including a central portion of semi-rigid rubber, a shallow, open receptacle in the upper surface of said central portion having a drain tube leading therefrom, said receptacle being adapted to receive excretions from the body of a person lying on the pad, an extension at one side of the receptacle having an upstanding rib. adapted to conformably seat against the persons back in the region of the base of the spine, a flat tapering apron integrally formed with the front edge of the receptacle adapted to underlie the legs of the person and a pair of sponge rubber sections abutting the side walls of the receptacle and also abutting the inner edge of the apron and fixedly secured thereto, said sections forming a ventilated supporting surface for the buttocks of the person.

6. A bed pad of substantially fiat form and including a central portion of moisture impervious material capable of sustaining the weight of a person, a shallow open receptacle in the upper surface of said central portion and having a drain tube leading therefrom, the walls of the pad outwardly of the receptacle being formed of resilient cellular material and adapted to provide ventilation for the portion of a persons body resting thereon.
