IMPROVEMENT IN SPlCE-CADDIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,609, dated October 14,v 1879; application filed September 18, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HARTLEY, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spice- Oaddies; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in caddies or receptacles for teas, coffees, spices, or other articles, and is particularly designed for the use of grocers, druggists, and other merchants dealing in such artioles as are stored or kept in bulk and retailed in small quantities; and it has for its object to provide for the transfer of such articles in quantities as will prevent unnecessary handlingas in the old way, by means of a scoopfrorn the main or stock receptacle, as required.

To this end the invention consists in a caddy consisting of a main or stock receptacle or vessel constructed of suitable material, and of any desired capacity, to hold the articles in bulk, the said receptacle being provided at the bottom with a series of hoppers, each provided with a sliding partition or cut-off, beneath which are arranged a series of removable drawers or receptacles of varying sizes, into which the articles contained in the stock-receptacle may be withdrawn, the lower part of the caddy being provided with a covered chamber in front, into which the drawers may be withdrawn when filled and previous to emptying, whereby any escaping particles will be caught and retained, as more fully hereinafter specified.

In the drawings, Figure 1 indicates a perspective view of my invention; Fig.2, atransve'rse vertical section, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

The letter A indicates the caddy, which in the present instance is of an approximatelyrectangular shape, although it may be made of any other convenient form.

The letter B indicates the main or stock receptacle of said caddy, which is provided at its bottom with a series of hoppers, (J, leading respectively to the sliding and removable drawers D, which are of different capacities, and are arranged to slide in recesses F beneath the respective hoppers G. p

The letter G represents a series of slides or cut-olfs located at the bottoms of the hoppers O, and arranged to move in ways H, so that they can be inserted or drawn out to cut off or admit a portion of the contents of the main receptacle or hopper to the respective drawers.

The letter I indicates a covered chamber formed in front of the lower part of the caddy, and K the cover of the same, hinged to the caddy at its front lower edge. The drawers D are adapted to be drawn outward into said ,chamber I, from whence they can beremoved to transfer their contents to any package or parcel, and afterward returned to their rcspective recesses beneath the hoppers.

The chamber I serves to retain any particles escaping from the drawers as they are drawn out, and thus prevent waste.

The top of the main or stock receptacle is provided with a cover, by means of which said receptacle can be filled and the aroma of the contents retained, the cover of the lower front receptacle serving to close the lower part of the caddy and prevent the loss of aroma at such point.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A caddy for teas, coffees, spices, and the like, consisting of a main or stock receptacle having a series of hoppers and cut-offs at the bottom, a series of sliding receptacles or drawers of varying sizes, and a covered chamber at the front or lower portion, as and for the purposes specified.
