4 Claims. (CL 229--19 My invention relates to packages and, while not limited in use tosuch goods, in a more specific manner, it relates to packages for cigarettes.

It applies to cigarette packages of the stiff- 5 type, that is to say, to the type made of cardboard and comprising two main parts, namely, case or sleeve and insert or sliding part.

In the conventional package, the insert or sliding part consists of a one-piece sheet of cardboard folded over lengthwise with the length of the cigarettes. board being towards one end of the cigarettes when this part is withdrawn partly from the sleeve, the short end provides a fiap which may be lifted to allow the removal of the contents. However, since the meeting point, as aforesaid, and therefore the flap, is at a certain end of the package, the insert must be withdrawn in one'direction only necessitating much attention. The

package must be upright and properly turned about to permit the right end of the insert to be withdrawn, a process utterly impossible in the dark.

, The main object of my invention is, therefore,

to provide a cigarette package which may be opened at either end and which afi'ords equal ease for removal of its contents.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent by perusal of the following description of the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a'cigarette package in accordance with my invention in open aspect;

Figure 2 shows the insert or sliding part there- Figure 3 is a plan view of the sliding part blank;

Figure 4 is a plan view of a suggestive tin-foil 40 blank;

Figure 5 is a further plan View of the sliding part blank; and I Figure 6 is a side view of the insert or sliding part.

Similar reference numerals denote identical parts in all the views.

In the drawings 5 indicates the sleeve or outer section of a conventional cigarette package of that type including an inner section of containerlike form slidably arranged in said sleeve.

' The'latter is open at each end and the inner section is closed at its inner end, open at its outer end, formed witha closure flap for its outer end and with the flap releasably held in closure rela- The meeting point of the card-- tion with respect to the inner section whenthe latter is not extended the desired extent from the open outer end of the outer section to permit of the releasing. of the flap to allow accessto the contents of the inner section. The sectional package, in accordance with this invention ineludes an outer section 5 of sleeve-like form corresponding to the form of sleeve referred to, but the inner section generally indicated at 5 is of a construction different from the said outer section referred to in that one may have access to in the contents thereof when such section is selectively extended from the open ends of the section.5. I

The insert or inner section 5 is tobe formed from the foldable blanks 5*, 5 shown by Figures 16 3 and 5 respectively.

The blank 5 consists of a one-piece foldable web having a pair of rectangular portions 6, 6 providing front and rear walls respectively for closing parts of the front and back of the insert and disposed in offset relation; a foldable oblong portion I I arranged between opposed sides of the portions 6, 6 providing one side wall of the insert; a pair of foldable oblong portions I2, I2 at the other sides of the portions 6, 6- respectively 5 correlating when folded and secured together to form the other side wall of the insert; a pair of foldable rectangular portions I3, l3 extended from and of greater width than the portions 6,

6* respectively and providing the end walls of 30 the insert; and foldable substantially rectangular portions 8, 9 extended respectively from and corresponding i width to the portions l3, I3*- and forming closure flaps for the open parts of the front and back of the insert and for seating 35 against the side walls.

The portions II, I2, I 2 are disposed at right angles to the portions 8, 9, l3, I3 The length of the portions 6, 6 is less than the length of the portions II, I2, I 2 The width of the portions 6, 6 is materially greater than the width of the portions II, I2, I2 The portion II is formed of a pair of parts H II of like length and width disposed in offset relation (Figure 6). The portion I2 is formed of two parts of equal length I2 I2 but part I2 is of greater width than part I2 The part I2 is inwardly offset with respect to part I2 The portion I 2 is formed of two parts 12 I2 of equal length, but the part I 2 is of greater width than part IZ The part I2 50 is inwardly offset with respect to part I2 The part I I aligns with part I2 The part I I aligns with the part I 2. The portion 6 has one end flush with corresponding end edges of the portions II, l2. The portion 6 has one of its ends 55,

flush with coresponding end edges of the portions ll, IZ The portions 13, [3 are of greater width and are of materially less length than the portions 6, 6 respectively. The portions 8, 9 correspond in width to the portions [3, l3 respectively and are substantially of the same length as the portions 6, 6 respectively. The portions 6, B in length correspond substantially to half of the length of the portions ll, l2, 12 The blank is scored between the portion 6 and the parts II and I2 between the portion B and the parts ll and I2 between the portions 6, B and the portions l3, I3 and between the portions l3, l3 and the portions 8, 9. The blank when folded to provide the insert and before the latter is inserted in the sleeve 5 will appear as shown by Figure 2.

The correlated side wall forming portions l2 may be secured together by cementitious material; as shown in Figure 5, the correlated side wall forming portions l2 [2 of the blank 5 are formed with oppositely disposed notches 16 of like form for connecting said portionsl2 l2 together. Otherwise than that as stated with respect to the blank 5 it will correspond in form to the blank 5 The inner section 5 is illustrated as having removably stored therein cigarettes indicated at In order to satisfy Government regulations, it may be necessary in some cases to make certain that one end of the insert may not be pulled out or opened without the removal of the excise stamp and, to that effect, I may provide a sealing strip H, as shown in Figure 6, joining the flap 9 to the rear portion of the insert. This strip may be easily removed by the user, after the excise stamp has been removed andthe insert has been pushed out for use.

It is suggested also that, in the use of a cigarette package made in accordance with this invention, the reading matter may be arranged on the opposite faces of the sleeve to read in opposite directions, so that it will help to indicate the position of the opening flap at each end.

As'it is customary to first wrap the contents of .the package in tinfoil, paper or other material, a suggestive wrapper blank is shown in Figure 4. This blank consists of a rectangular piece of material sufficiently large to completely wrap the contents with sufi'icient material added along the edges, as shown at I4, to permit overlapping. Cuts [5 may be made to permit easy opening thereof. It is to be clear, however, that any style wrapper may be used in combination with the insert. It is to be understood, further, that changes may be made in the insert to suit various requirements or the course of manufacture without departing from the spirit of the inven-' tion as covered by my claims. It is similarly permissible to employ the herein novel insert, or variations therefrom within the above-mentioned scope with cases or sleeves which may differ in shape or style from that shown and described in the specification.
